Turner is in another universe and I'm pretty sure Noel would admit as much. I doubt it. Turner's alright for clever turns of phrase and that, but he's hardly got a Live Forever in him, has he? The majority of his first album was about flagging taxis and spotting birds in nightclubs. I wouldn't say that LF has great lyrics. I mean great song blah blah blah, probably my favourite song of all time, but 'Maybe I don't really want to know, how your garden grows, cos I just want to fly'? Its a simple, great song, anthemic and vague, but not lyrically brilliant. Not that I'm saying its terrible or anything, I think it has pretty good lyrics, just not great ones. Its nothing on 'A Certain Romance' in my book, in terms of lyrics.

I think you're confusing greatness with cleverness. A lyric doesn't have to be clever or poetic to be great or even make much sense. Sometimes its just the sound or the flow of the words that make them great.

I don't disagree and I'm not slandering the lyrics to LF, I just wouldn't call them great, like something that Alex Turner should aspire because they are so awe inspiringly brilliant (again purely talking of lyrics, not the song as a whole).

I think you're confusing greatness with cleverness. A lyric doesn't have to be clever or poetic to be great or even make much sense. Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at. While I won't argue that Alex Turner is the better lyricist from an intellectual standpoint, to me his lyrics are utterly meaningless. They're too specific, too personal, and lacking in both ambiguity and ambition. Sure, they sound alright, but ultimately they evoke nothing.

The lyrics of Cornerstone were very evokotive I thought, the bit about keeping his shortcut to himself (suggesting that he wants to moment to last longer) was one of the best lyrics I've heard for a while.

'And I love that little game you had called Crying Lightning And how you like to aggravate the ice cream man on rainy afternoons'
Nabbed it off some lyrics site. Had to be sure I heard it right. Fucking appauling lyrics. I've only ever heard them on the radio once and I listen to the radio alot, and that once was today when Key 103 I think played When The Sun Goes Down or something. It was decent, but that was it. It's meant to be one of their best tracks apparently and if its only decent, I'd hate to listen to other tracks from their first 2 albums, let alone Humbug which is consistently getting average reviews. The Oasis of MY generation? (I'm a teenager). Fuck right off, Cigarettes and Alcohol means more to me in this day and age then one of the AM's songs, especially considering by the time I leave school, no matter how good I do in my exams, no matter how good I do at college, I'll be stuck in a waiting line of 100 people, more experience and qualified than myself. Will I listen to songs about ice cream men and scummy men? I don't fucking think so.

The first time I heard it I thought it was s**t. But it happens to me all the time lol.
I don't really think this is an AWESOME album. The truth is that I wanted to find a more powerful album, more outrageous, loud, as it is Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and Favourite Worst Nightmare.
And I was thinking that when I heard Humbug for the first time, I think I just wanted to find something similar as in the first two.
I thought: Wow, I can't wait to hear something like Brianstorm or Teddy Picker or The View From The Afternoon, but I didn't.
There's nothing similar to that in this album, I didn't find it and It's ok cos we need changes sometimes but I'm a bit scared haha. It's just somewhat different to what they have done, I can't deny that it's a good album cos I really some tunes from it. However, I think they are leaving aside what the Arctic Monkeys were, I'm not saying that's bad just that many people probably think they've fallen into mediocrity. . :s

FWN is a really clever album. There's no doubt Turner can be a clever lyricists - Old Yellow Bricks and This House is a Circus are both amazing. But he just fails to deliver on Humbug on everything - vocals, lyrics, you name it.
And they still lack melody in most of their songs, which I think really hinders them from reaching their full potential.

Old Yellow Bricks is such a good song. Britney Spears stole it haha.
I find FWN to be on par if not better than their first. Both of their first 2 albums are top tier stuff but I'm just not feeling this one that much. Cornerstone is pretty damn good though.

Rolling Stone gives it 4 stars. It may be after I give it some more listens, but pisses me off that the little chick that reviewed DOYS gave it a 2 1/2. DOYS to me is 3 1/2 - 4.

I think this album is a deliberate attempt to turn off people like you and get a 'more discerning' fanbase as I think one reviewer put it. They don't want to be the Oasis of the generation, to put it another way. They want to move on and challenge themselves and their audience.

But he just fails to deliver on Humbug on everything - vocals, lyrics, you name it. Not necessarily. In one or two cases, his approach on both counts is quite apt. The problem is that he sustains it for the duration of the album.
