Underated. He was mixed in the late 70's but at the time of death he was becoming excellent and consistent.

Instant Karma & Happy X Mas were huge .. fantastic
Imagine & Jealous did something that none of Paul's song ever did .. They topped Beatles songs !
Mind games then Walls & Bridges were decent album ..
& a bit before his death , Double Fantasy's got some of the greatest song ever written by John ...
He was only 31 when Imagine & Jealous Guy were released .. And it's so much better than anything Noel has ever written .. I don't even mention Liam's writting " skills " cause they're nothing much to talk about it ..
John is god ... Noel & Liam will forever be pilgrims

I only like a few of his tunes to be honest...prefer McCartney to Lennon.

This is my kinda thread. John Lennon's solo work is the most important music in the world to me. Other than Sometime in NYC, his stuff is absolute class. To me his first two records are mindblowing. I know I've listened to the Imagine album more than a 100 times in my lifetime, the music is timeless. Also, Mind Games and Walls and Bridges are two of the most underated albums of all-time. Mind Games features three of the most underrated Lennon tracks; Out the Blue, Bring on the Lucie, and I Know (I Know). If you haven't heard these I highly recommend them. I know most of his solo stuff doesn't compare to the Beatles, but the material is all quality and worthy of being ranked amongst the best of all-time.

Lennon was really hitting a second golden period in 1980 right before his death. So many good tunes he was cooking up. The 80s would have been interesting with him in it and beyond........
- (Just Like) Starting Over - I'm Losing You - Beautiful Boy - Watching The Wheels - Woman - I'm Stepping Out - I Don't Wanna Face It - Nobody Told Me - Borrowed Time

The Talking Heads were becoming a Lennon influence along with Cheaptrick and Bob Marley, I'd have loved to see that take more of a shape in the 1980s.

It's not much comfort, but it's nice to know that Lennon and McCartney had made some sort of peace with each other. A shame that he never made up with George Harrison though, a regret that Harrison admitted afterwards. From Lennon's last few interviews, you could sense a yearning for the past. He mentioned that he missed Liverpool for example (a good excerpt in Paul Morley's book 'The North') and wanted to 'return home' in typical Lennon fashion by hiring the QE2 from New York and taking it up the Mersey.
I think a Beatles reunion would have happened, though in what guise I'm not sure. I think he'd have had a second wind - very good music, not as great as his peak but kind of the renaissance that Dylan and Springsteen had. Some of the demos confirm that such as Real Love, which is beautiful and its rough nature heightens the songs vulnerability.

Listening to Lennon's best of collection now. Just Like Starting Over is probably my favourite, along with Instant Karma, Jealous Guy, and Watching the Wheels. Love is also brilliant and somewhat haunting.

As a kid I grew up a huge fan of John Lennon and Steve McQueen. Strangely they mirror one another. Both absolute huge international stars in their respective fields of art. Both walked away from it all in 1975 to become family men. Both returned to their craft in 1980. Both died in 1980. Steve was 50. John was 40. Weird if you ask me. I was never alive when they were alive (born in 1981) and yet they struck a deep chord in me forever.

Hugely overrated. God is a fucking tune though, that last verse is better than the rest of his solo career combined. Absolutely incredible.
