Loving this brand new album by Mr. Weller. I’m listening to it for the third time now. The first 3 tracks flow really well. Jumble Queen, Soul Wandering and Gotta Get In (featuring Mick Talbot!) will be great live. The most impressive one to me is My Best Friend’s Coat. A touch of Dylan in I Woke Up. His daughter Leah joined in Rise Up Singing with her beautiful voice. Fantastic job by Jacko Peake as well. matt, Erland Cooper joined in Burn Out as backing vocal. Happy Birthday Mr. Weller! You’re my inspiration and energy. Ah I'm going to see Erland Cooper next month! Maybe Weller will return the favour! |

Stood in the pissing rain last night, resulting in a cold today, all for watching Bruce Springsteen in Sunderland. I was soaked through and it risked being a miserable washout. But once he came on stage, his presence lifted the mood by laughing off the weather and embracing it all. He really got in on the conditions, braving the elements for three hours and joined the crowd in getting soaked, putting on the most energetic, euphoric and emotional show I've ever seen. I completely forgot about the rain and three hours rattled by in no time. Saw him 11 years ago in Glasgow, so a long time but I always think I'm getting older and too cynical these days to have heroes or be blown away by anything, to the point that I won't enjoy these things as much anymore. But it takes a genius to tap into youthful innocence and wonder and that happened last night. He was great. The E Street Band was great. It was without a doubt the greatest gig I've ever been to. It's everything that music is meant to be. Here's a wonderful helicopter shot from last night.  |

Dortmund winning it would go some way to instilling some faith at the elite end of the game.
It would be the best thing ever, beating a mere Hollywood club. They've always been a 'proper' club have Dortmund.
And I don't know, but maybe being massive underdogs might help them a bit. It might be a bit suicidal to go for even a balanced tactic in attack and defence, given how good Madrid are at exploiting spaces. But a backs against the wall defensive tactic gives them assurances in what they need to do, they did well against PSG flair so cramping Real Madrid's style might help. That lot are also due a loss in a final.

They should fire him out of a cannon at St Andrews. The stadium would at least have something to cheer about and be at full capacity. |

It's the age old dilemma though - keep him in the tournament for as long as possible so he stays out the commentary box or have the fun of watching him get knocked out. Tough one! Weird decision at the BBC to hire him when they planned to ditch Dennis Taylor. Was in Sheffield at the Crucible earlier this week taking in a few games, Ken Doherty is really nice guy in person, great with everyone. You can't ditch Taylor or Virgo, they are so far ahead of Murphy/Perry/Allen it hurts. Did you hear the story of what Murphy did to Maguire? I'd never heard it before No I haven't heard that story. I know they've had previous slanging matches but not aware of anything else? |

What’s better: Four consecutive league titles, or one season invincibles? I don’t know. Are we in danger of losing the best/most impressive PL record? I don't think the Invincibles are in any way threatened by a club that's illegally bought four in a row. Seriously, everyone's forgotten City won the treble last season (apart from the 8 people that turned up to their trophy parade last season). Interesting how it is the same trophies that Man Utd won in '99 yet nobody talks about it. It's so far from anyone's mind and that's telling. Everyone knows what's going on. |

Did you hear any of it before it was taken down? Not aware of this circulating. Hi. I did. The video in question featured a kind of low-quality 30ish second snippet of an instrumental song. Long story short, the instrumental was later reused for the David Holmes remix of I'm Not Giving Up Tonight. Yesterday I read somewhere that supposedly a snippet of Daisies can be found in the Apple Music documentary of WBTM. But I don't have a subscription to that so I can't access it nor confirm that the taken-down video took the snippet from that documentary. If somebody with Apple Music access can locate it, I would appreciate it! Look out for a tune that sounds like the INGUT remix. Did Daisies turn into I'm Not Giving Up Tonight? Like the vibe from the original 'Daisies', sounds like something from R.E.M's Up album. |

She’s not really challenging the negative stereotype that women can’t let things go, is she? TWO HOURS of grudge settling?! I’d like her to put her sizeable talents to use on a subject other than herself and her sadnesses sometimes. I like ‘Clara Bow’ because, although it’s still about her, she expands her vision out a bit by grappling with the cynical nature of the LA-based music business, her place in it, and what the future might bring for her and those who will follow her. Haven't listened to it, don't intend to, but read a Paste article that highlighted some awful lyrics: "“You smoked then ate seven bars of chocolate, we declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist / I scratch your head, you fall asleep like a tattooed golden retriever”. I mean, really??! Sounds like Count Arthur Strong doing poetry! Hence the Be Here Now comparisons, critics falling over themselves but sooner or later they'll realise how deluded they were. At least I can laugh at "you see me, I've got my magic pie" for its 'can't be arsed' attitude to lyrics. |

With The Verve, the whole is definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Who knows what kind of career they'd have had post-Urban Hymns if (a) Ashcroft dropped his messianic complex and (b) realised he isn't a god given talent in songwriting. He had a purple patch of good tracks on Urban Hymns but his solo career is maudlin saccharine dreck. The rest of The Verve are top though. McCabe especially. Give Ashcroft an interesting backing track courtesy of these talented guys and he'll do fine. Give him an acoustic guitar, then run a mile. Richard as a "Feel Flows" lyricist is up there with Stipe and Bono for me. Give him a mic and sprawling flow of music and he'll condense it into something single worthy. Give him an acoustic and he'll leave a generic loaf. The difference in greatness is some kind of humility. Bono and Stipe had the humility and self awareness to step aside and allow the band to dictate where songs went. Hence why both of their bands have at least seven albums each that can be considered truly great. On the other hand, Ashcroft's ego destroyed his band not once, not twice but three times. The man is an a-grade weapon and reading stories about him makes me admire the rest of The Verve even more for having to put up with him. |
