Liam looked cool in this era but Noel sounded at his absolute best in the SOTSOG era. This was the time when he really began to be able to sing (listen to him sing at Maine Road or Knebworth and it can be quite painful). However, the way he sings BV's and lead in 2000 is sensational.

Some information about when the band were trying to audition bassists to replace Guigsy in 1999. Ex Monaco man David ‘Pottsy’ Potts was close to joining the band in 1999 as replacement for Guigs. Below are some interesting articles about this time. Believe it or not it appears he even contributed to this forum. This article from the NME dated 26th October 1999 mentions him being close to joining. Not much time before the first gig of the US festival tour starting on 3rd December. www.nme.com/news/music/oasis-1161-1393945This thread has a photo of a page from Peter Hook's 'Inside New Order' which details what happened during Pottsy audition with the band live4ever.proboards.com/thread/85655/remember-david-potts-oasis-bassist?page=1Pottsy contributed to the forum to explain in 2018. “Remember people, there's a certain artistic licence used when writing books, and a lot is (definitely maybe) sensationalized. Most comments on this forum/article below are quite complimentary so thank you. One is downright rude... but there are many presumptuous pillocks in this world. Only the people there at the time know what happened, mainly myself, Noel and Gem. I loved Oasis, still do but to quote Roy Walker... It was good but it wasn't right. As for Wonderwall, it just needed a tweek. 😉 X” live4ever.proboards.com/thread/85655/remember-david-potts-oasis-bassist?page=2Pottsy explains what happened in this interview with the Manchester Evening News in 2013 www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/music/potty-to-blow-oasis-chance-1048809Never seen this before Andy Reid from Manchester band Plastic Gun Alliance was approached by the Oasis camp to replace Guigsy on bass. Maybe he thought that the job was too big for him.

That would be amazing. I can’t tell you how many times I read that review in high school I guess a month or two before leak/release. Thanks. Thanks a lot in advance, if you can make it happen. Much appreciated. Sorry for the delay in responding, but it took me a few days to go to my mother's house, look for the magazines and scan them... but it's done! Additionally, I have taken the opportunity to scan other magazines from that era that I have found. There is news related to the band, announcements, interviews and SOTSOG reviews. *There are a couple of interviews that came in separate issues of NME and UNCUT magazine, so I have merged them into the same file, as I find it more comfortable to read. Well I hope you enjoy it! www.mediafire.com/file/8itypiagppy075u/Music_Magazines_2000_by_Ajito.zip/fileP.S. Lennon2217 : the track by track review it's the file named "Melody Maker 19.02.2000" P.S.2 "The Fan-ishinquisition" (NME) is really funny. Interesting, that on the Melody Maker's track by track review Noel states that Roll It Over is his favourite song on the album. He clearly loved it at least in that point of his life. Also, the opening gig of the tour in Japan didn't seem to go down too well according to the reviewer, which is quite understandable though, new band members and they were still searching for their sound. Everyone was a bit rusty.

This was shared earlier in this thread.

Julian Taylor from the band Starclub recently appeared on the oasis podcast and stated he had auditioned to be bassist in oasis in 1999 before Andy Bell joined. He almost joined when Guigsy left in 1995. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-oasis-podcast/id1224373139?i=1000669506491So now we know Julian Taylor from Starclub, Pottsy from the band Monaco and Andy Reid from the band Plastic Gun Alliance all auditioned to join the band as bassist in 1999. The auditions would have taken place at Wheeler End Studios

Love this album. I think if you replace the 2-3 weakest songs on the album with the strongest b-sides from that era and it'd be a classic.

Put Little James after Who Feels Love?, Full On and Let's All Make Believe in for Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is, One Way Road in for Sunday Morning Call and then take out I Can See a Liar, and you've got a pretty good album.

I do have a soft spot for this album, it certainly has it's clangers on here, but do love the overall vibe of it. All of my friends at the time hated it as it wasnt DM Mark 2! But sometimes a change is needed, although this is of course not exactly perfect, it still has it's fair share of great songs on it.......I personally lied the direction of Who Feels Love, and would have liked some more of that ilk really (from what I remember it was in an open G tuning or something similar) I heard an acoustic-ish version on youtube ages ago and it was great (can't remember the date etc)

There was definitely enough good songs from that era to make a better album.
Noel often says now that the songs weren't there. That's fair enough, they're his songs, so I can't say he's wrong, but I personally think there just needed to be 2 or 3 replaced. There was no need to have two Noel songs in a row, especially plodders. One of them could go for a start.

Replace WFL with absolutely any other track and this album slaps. ANY other track. Four and half minutes of Liam playing kazoo with his butt, I don't care.

It's one of my biggest favorites on the album. I love the psychedelic mood and the buid up for the solo. Liam also delivers great vocals. It's great that we have this "softer" studio version and the more guitar rich live versions.

I've always meant to play around with adjusting the playback speed, just never got around to it.

I really like Who Feels Love, its different, noel trying another approach to songwriting.
I still dont understand why Revolution Song was left off though, such a crime. Even with the Blur thing, they sounded vastly different. Really hope there a secret final version somewhere. NGHFB version sucks so bad in comparison.

No SOTSOG should start without Fuckin' in the Bushes. Are you mad. This is the one that does not move, ever.
But Teotihuacan could fit somewhere. Maybe after Gas Panic.

Great thread.
I'd love to learn more about this era. For full disclosure - I'm 36 and was a massive fan as a kid in the 90s from hearing my older cousin playing WTSMG in 95, aged 7. Have vivid memories of playing it non-stop on repeat for years, buying DYKWIM single and Be Here Now and living through the Britpop mania years. Then after the BHN hype died down I lost interest, listened to grunge and 'nu metal' until rediscovering DM just before Heathen Chemistry was released and the rest is history.
But 99-01 feels like a lost era to me - I lived through almost everything else but I still can't get my head around the change from BHN to SOTSOG.

Whichever track list I go with (and I have quite a few iterations!), FITB always starts it off ... and Little James, Money/Mouth and Liar are nowhere near it.
