Get Off Your High Horse Lady is a great tune. π΄ I don't think I'd call it GREAT, but I don't think it's bad or anything and I definitely enjoy singing along to it. It's a fine album cut, imo.

Hearing Pretty Boy live changed my mind on the track. Really motors along and the chorus feels bigger. Recorded track is still a tough love for me. I don't dislike the studio version, it's one of Noel's better produced tracks by himself, but its just a wee bit lightweight. Could do with being a bit beefier in the production ala Robert Smith version. My complaint is that it felt "empty". I first heard Pretty Boy and went "that's it?". I think the Robert Smith remix is perfection. THAT is how you do a fucking remix. Definitely "beefed it up" perfectly for me.

Unpopular opinion; Council Skies is really not that good after a few months, bar a few tracks.

Unpopular opinion; Council Skies is really not that good after a few months, bar a few tracks. Haven't listened to it in many months. Have listened to Who Built The Moon and a clutch of his b-sides more in those months actually. Sadly no staying power for me.

Unpopular opinion; Council Skies is really not that good after a few months, bar a few tracks. Is it really unpopular? I mean amongst the fans here, not all the raving reviews he's been getting. Anyhow I'm with you. I've felt this from day 1 and its never gotten any better. I still think Dead To The World is the best song he's written, but other than this one, there's one great song (Think of a Number) there's 3 forgettable songs (INGUT, Open the door and Love is a Rich Man), 1 b-side material (There She Blows), 1 uninspired song that would have needed more work (Pretty Boy), 3 regular Noel (Council Skies, Easy Now and Trying to find a world...).

I felt like I saw mostly rave reviews here of CS when it came out, but maybe I just noticed them more because I disagreed with them.
I don't know if I have quite the right terms here, but my problem with CS is that it's noisy but not heavy enough to balance that out. By that I don't mean that I wanted it to be more of a rock album (although I did), but that on most of the tracks, even the ones I like all right, there's too much stuff high up in the register and not enough bass to compensate. The title track is particularly bad for this, especially the strings that just whine and don't add anything, but it's a problem throughout most of the album. Pretty Boy is actually the big exception here; I know people think it's boring, but at least it's really grounded in the bass guitar.

WBTM was a breath of fresh air and even with its mixing faults I still go back to it occasionally. The songs are good but I get the feeling I've heard it all before.

Simple Game of Genius should not have been on his first album.
Council Skies is his second-best album.
His solo version of Revolution Song is amazing.
Ballad of the Mighty I is one of his worst solo songs (and is my least favorite on an otherwise great album).

I think Noel's ears have nothing left when it comes to the low end. Thus the CTS remasters and the last two albums (which, I agree, sound a bit tinny).

I just cant stand it, the worst song he's ever produced. I'd be interested to hear his "60s version" though, because its mainly the production that make me physically sick (no kidding). That break before the chorus brrrr i just cant listen to it.

Well one person's shit song is another's gem. Simple Game of Genius and Ballad of the Mighty I are two of my fave songs of Noel's. Both top 5 for me. I also love the production on If I Had A Gun.
Proper unpopular opinion: can't stand DLBIA and never have done since the day the album came out - although that's not solo related, I know...it's the only really contentious opinion I have I think

Simple Game of Genius is awful, yet another mid tempo bore! Yeah it's a bit long, not exciting. Was better left off as a bside-extra track.

Yeah, A Simple Game of Genius should have been recorded at a faster tempo and with heavier guitars. I still enjoy it a lot though.

What I was trying to say is that a popular NGHFB opinion is that the song should have made the first album and should not have been a bonus track, and it's that opinion which I disagree with. Which is why for me the unpopular opinion is that Noel was correct in leaving Simple Game of Genius off the album and including it as a bonus track.
