I've been working on a remix of SOTSOG on and off for a while now. While I've always loved the ambition of the album and it has some brilliant songs, it's quickly becoming my least listened to album... Which makes me sad. It's a few decisions away from being one of their best. I've boiled down the reasons I fatigue of this album so quickly to a few points:
- Some of the tracks just don't make the cut. Either bad instrumentals, lazy songwriting or lack of inspiration. I certainly wish they weren't so enamored with the choir preset on their synthesisers.
- The album lacks good pacing. The tracklist doesn't pull or push me into the next song and sometimes feels like a chore bumbling through it.
- Finally, the album lacks an overarching sense of hope. Almost all of the songs are sombre. To be clear though, Noel's divulged on many occasions that this is simply how he felt during this point in his career after quitting coke and the come down after Be Here Now. You can't change that, but one of the demos recorded at that time would have lifted the album dramatically. Of the tracklist, the first two tracks are pumping and fill you with energy. The rest feel like they're fighting something or looking back in regret (except perhaps for Little James).
So, unable to fix all of the above points with the source material, I've worked out a new tracklist which at least tries to address the most glaring of issues. Therefore, here's my take on SOTSOG and what it could have been, Side A and Side B:
Let's All Make Believe Intro (Fuckin' In...) I Can See A Liar Who Feels Love Where Did It All Go Wrong Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is
Interlude (...The Bushes) Go Let It Out Gas Panic! Full On Revolution Song Roll It Over
Total length: 50:29
Now, let me explain. While I criticed SOTSOG for being too sombre, this only really feels jarring on the album because the first two tracks are Definitely Maybe level high energy. It certainly sets you up for a fall. So why not set the tone properly with the fan favourite track of the era, Let's All Make Believe. The inspiration for this came from 'Sound Affects' featuring on the Oasis Podcast. And it works! You're no longer set up for disappointment and it's a nice contrast compared to the Chasing The Sun trilogy's anthemic opening tracks.
Now the stage is set, build back up the energy with FITB part 1 (Intro) which is the first half the track before the main riff changes and the female vocal comes in. This then fades into I Can See A Liar.
ICSAL may not have the best lyrics, but I like the groove and it keeps that all important energy up. It certainly sounds better off the back of FITB than SMC.
Now into two of the slowest, but strongest tracks on the album. Keeping the interest alive with excellent instrumentals, melodies and lyrical content.
Then to end side A, PYMWYMI. The Columbia of its time. It has a very simple lyrical structure, but it has a thumping psychedelic groove which is certainly a better way of closing this side than Little James. Plus, it keeps the ever important energy up allowing the more 'thoughtful' songs to breathe.
Into side B, we open with the interlude (FITB part 2) and the second half of the song where the riff changes and the pace picks up. I prefer the instrumental split into two segments. Ultimately, because this keeps the iconic introduction to Go Let It Out intact.
Go Let It Out on side B, in my opinion, is exactly what this album needed. Otherwise this side is incredibly heavy with little to no relief. And it keeps the listener interested in the first half knowing this pay off is coming having already heard the single on the radio. I've included the extended outro from the demo which is a jazzy drum fill. Although the Austin Powers sample at the beginning of the demo is part of the Oasis canon, I don't think it works well on the album.
One highlight to another, Gas Panic is the behemoth of the album. Dark, moody, anthemic. Another contender for the best song on the album. I think this contrasts nicely from the energetic Go Let It Out.
To compliment GP, we hit the ground running again with a moody stadium rocker, Full On. Liam would sound mega on this!
The penultimate track then... What we've all been waiting for, a bit of hope and sweet relief. Revolution Song! It surely would have been this era's DLBIA if it had been released as a single instead of SMC. I read that Noel decided against releasing this because Blur put out Tender which seems like a strange reason to me. Particularly because RS is leaps and bounds above it. I reckon the absence of this track is SOTSOG's biggest pitfall and a real shame.
Finally, there's no other way to conclude this album than with Roll It Over. It's not perfect, but has all the right ingredients for a great closer.
Perhaps the Singles could look like this:
Go Let It Out Cigarettes In Hell Little James
Who Feels Love Fuckin' In The Bushes Sunday Morning Call
Revolution Song Carry Us All One Way Road
And that's it. My two cents. This album used to be in my top 3 because it is really different from anything else they did and truly ambitious. But I rarely put it on anymore which is a shame. I think with the above tracklist, it would definitely climb the ranks (maybe).
Let There Be Love could have been another boost, but I prefer the lyrics on the DBTT album so glad he worked on it through the years.
I might get around to putting it on YouTube eventually.
Thoughts?

Worth a go although not sure about LAMB before FITB.
If I had a pound for everyone who’s ever said Liam singing Full On would sound amazing! It would, but the Noel/sung version is a bit meh.
SOTSOG is a riddle that will never be solved - and that’s part of its appeal. They were - and always will be - 2 to 3 songs short of a great album.

I don't mind Full On but I agree it would have sounded much better with Liam singing the lead vocals instead of Noel.

This album in general is really hard to explain. On one hand, it has possibly the best song they've ever released post 2000. But on the other, it has terrible songs that deserve to be B-sides. The structure of the album is wrong as well, but enough of my ranting.
I like your idea of the remix, but I'd say that Fuckin' In the Bushes, in my opinion, isn't a Swamp Song, where you can make it an interlude. Let's All Make Believe should be at the end of an album as well, and Gas Panic! should've been a single (in the remix and in real life)

I got round the shortage of Liam-sung songs by including Carnation - purists be damned!
Go Let It Out Gas Panic Where Did It All Go Wrong? Roll It Over Carnation Carry Us All Who Feels Love Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is Let’s All Make Believe One Way Road/Revolution Song

All Oasis songs should be sung by Liam. All of them. Where Did it All Go Wrong, One Way Road, all of them. He was ten times the vocalist Noel was and not having him singing a song is a crime, unless he literally can't reach notes. Notice how no-one ever looks at a Liam-sang song and goes "Noel should have done that". People get used to Noel's vocals on the ones he sang, basically. But just imagine snarling, 2000 Liam giving it that "You know that feelin' you geeeetttt, you feel yer older than tiiiiime..." and tell me it wouldn't be amazing. If he had sang it, no-one would be calling for Noel to have done it. And Noel singing stuff like Full On or The Fame is just infuriating.
Anyway, tracklists. I have three. If you want to stick purely to the songs released in that era:
1. Fuckin' in the Bushes 2. Go Let it Out 3. Who Feels Love? 4. Full On 5. Gas Panic! 6. Where Did it All Go Wrong? 7. Let's All Make Believe 8. Sunday Morning Call 9. One Way Road 10. Roll it Over
If you want to include songs Noel had written then, but wouldn't released until later:
1. Fuckin' in the Bushes 2. Go Let it Out 3. Who Feels Love? 4. Little by Little 5. Gas Panic! 6. Where Did it All Go Wrong? 7. Let's All Make Believe 8. Sunday Morning Call 9. Idler's Dream 10. Roll it Over
And if, like me, you think they shouldn't have released an album then but waited until Noel found the muse for singles again:
1. Fuckin' in the Bushes 2. Go Let it Out 3. Who Feels Love? 4. Little by Little 5. The Hindu Times - Demo Version 6. Gas Panic! 7. Where Did it All Go Wrong? 8. Stop Crying Your Heart Out 9. Let's All Make Believe 10. Roll it Over

Plus Noel on vocals for 3 of last 5. It’s a conundrum that can’t be solved.

The success of DLBIA went to Noel's head probably so he started sticking himself on anything.
Agree that Noel really shouldn't have sung anything.

Liam's singing all of them, and he's making them all ten times better when he does. Imagine his raspy vocals singing that "Heeeeere's anotha sunday morniiiiiin' caaallll" - it'd be fantastic. It'd be ten times better than Noel, because he's ten times a better singer. Like I said, people just get used to Noel singing the songs he did, so that they become inherently "Noel songs" in their minds - but if Liam can hit the notes, he sings it better. The Masterplan, One Way Road, Magic Pie, Full On, The Fame: the fact that Liam Fucking Gallagher was in the band that released these songs and didn't sing them is maddening. Like I said, I guarantee that if Liam had sung those songs, no-one would be on here saying Noel should have done them. Just like no-one says Noel should have sang Let's All Make Believe, because even though it's a personal ballad that fits the stereotype of a "Noel song", Liam's vocals still just invest a whole other level of emotion and uniqueness. It's Liam Gallagher. He sings the songs.

I strongly disagree that Liam should've sung all Oasis songs. Sure Liam was obviously the better vocalist but his performance is so limited. There's just no subtlety with the guy. Just loud and proud or nothing. Saying that he's the better vocalist therefore he should sing all the songs is too much of a simplification. Do people really think Liam would've improved songs like 'Half the World Away' and 'The Importance of Being Idle' had he sung them. Really? C'mon.
Anyway, back to SOTSOG... I find it pretty amazing how little single power that album had. 'Go Let It Out' was literally the only real option and Noel had 'Little by Little' just sat there on the back burner. I'm not saying 'Little by Little' is a great tune but jeez that album could've done with that song. If you're gonna put songs without single power out as singles at least choose something obviously good like 'Gas Panic!'.

One does a grittier fragile but sometimes that only makes it more broken than the softer fragile. I prefer Liam on Sad Song for that reason. Hits me deeper. But I also think how any voice hits you is very individual. I’d love to hear how Liam would have sounded on some songs, and rarely vice versa, but the two voices is so much a part of the thing I'm fine leaving it how it was.

Not anymore imho. Example : World Outside my Room, I'm Outta Time. Stuff like that. But some songs have Noel, and only Noel to sing them. Liam could never pull off DLBIA the way Noel does, especially these days. Where Did All go wrong is another fine example. Or the Masterplan. Or Half the World Away. Noel transforms Fade Away when he sings it. Those songs would just be another anthem for beer bellies with Liam on it, not that is anything wrong with that, since i have that belly a bit sometimes. With Noel on vocals, they become something else, because Noel had to overcome his "weak voice". He adds something Liam could never add. Both are amazing though, just that Noel's singing is more "subtle", Liam is more "animal". I wouldn't want an Oasis record with just one of them on vocals as well.

Half the World Away, Talk Tonight, and the ones Liam couldn't hit (Rapture, Idle) are the only songs I'd give to Noel.
The Masterplan, Sunday Morning Call, Where Did it All Go Wrong, Falling Down - all of the others should be Liam.
More subtlety and emotion in his voice than almost anyone I've heard. When people say a song "suits Noel's voice", they almost exclusively mean that Noel did sing it and that's the version they've gotten used to. Like I said - notice how there is not a single song sang by Liam that anyone says "suits Noel's voice". That either means that Noel had a 100% hit rate in choosing which songs Liam could sing for fifteen years, or that the truth is that Liam is a better singer and immediately owns almost any track that he puts his vocals on. His voice, with that prideful snarl able to carry an undercurrent of sadness when he wants it, isn't just gorgeous - it's the soul of Oasis.
It's Liam fucking Gallagher. He sings the songs.

there is nothing subtle in the way Liam sings Don’t Go Away or LAMB. The music makes it subtle, but the vocals are in your face and straight.
same with CS, but that doesn't mean they didn't suit the song. I fuckin love those songs, those versions but never thought to myself : "yeah, subtle". emotional, yes, subtle, no.

When people say "subtle", do they just mean "more quiet"? Seems like a nebulous term that you can slap on Noel's vocals without defining it too much to back up the idea of Noel "suiting" those songs because that's the version of them you've gotten used to, and that's how you now imagine the song has to be sung. Seems to me that Liam's voice has a hell of a lot more light-and-shade to it, more ability to add more than one emotion to a single line, more commanding presence, and a hell of a lot more uniqueness.
Liam even has a tonne of subtlety when he's belting the songs out - that's why Wonderwall is one of the most iconic songs ever. Because Liam can add subtle hints of sadness and longing even when he's giving it the full anthem treatment. If anything, Noel has less subtlety - if he belts it, it's just that, belting it out. If it's a ballad, you get his plaintive ballad-voice. Both are fine, he can deliver a tune well, but I don't hear any particular "subtle" quality to his voice that means he would have sang a song like Sunday Morning Call better than Liam could have done. In fact, I'm 100% sure that Liam would have sang it better, and if he had, there would be a grand total of zero people on here wishing Noel had sang it and invested it with some unknowable "subtle" quality.
There's a semi-acoustic song, with lyrics that are personal to Noel, and a relaxed tone with no belting-it-out melodies. And there's not a single person who thinks Noel should have sang it. Because the only quality to an Oasis song that truly makes people think that Noel should have sang it is that he did sing it and now that's how they think of the song.

He was ten times the vocalist Noel was and not having him singing a song is a crime, unless he literally can't reach notes. I'm sorry, but Liam isnt singing One Way Road or Sunday Morning Call. He can try his hands in singing Full On, but I'm glad Noels on the other tracks. him singing one way road probably wouldnt be great, noel is best for that, but liam could definitely sing SMC. I actually don't hate SMC that much, I prefer it to WDIAGW (which i think is pretty unremarkable, especially the album version and the way noels voice almost sounds autotuned), but it is kind of bland and repetitive with noel singing it. It is missing something. There's no reason Liam couldn 't sing SMC, seeing as he sang SCYHO and they are very similar songs. SMC would have actually been immense with Liam. Would have sounded very cool. Could have been an oasis classic easily. And noel could join in with the chorus like SCYHO. Liam would have also improved WDIAGW actually i think. Although i just really dont like the way the album version sounds to begin with on that song. One Way Road or cigarettes in hell should have been the noel songs on the album side note i can see why the other band members pushed for i can see a liar to be on the album. without i can see a liar it would have been too soft of an album. they had the right idea and they didnt really have any other harder songs available besides dull on, which was a noel song (dull was a typo but im keeping it)
