I'm not huge on this song, but is... "I can see a liar Sitting by the fire" ...really a million miles away from... "Stand up beside the fireplace Take that look from off your face" ...? Absolutely The expression "I can see a liar" is just cringey itself, the fact that "sitting by the fire" was clearly written just because it rhymed makes it worse The line in DLBIA creates a very clear mental image while still leaving space for intepretation, in a song with plenty of lines that manage to do so And that is without mentioning the musical contexts those verses are part of What's the fireplace got to do with anything in DLBIA? Seems if you like the song then it paints a picture, but if you don't it's irrelevant.

Not my favourite Oasis song and not their best, but the one from Nantes was brilliant.

Once may be a bit cheesy, don't think so personally, but it fits the tune, same for FWIW (which I think is shit btw) Little James is cringey, Chinatown is cringey, the Take Me Away chorus is as I said I hate stuff that's too plain and factual and doesn't give you any chance to use your imagination Songs are supposed to be slightly artificial, there's a lot of fun into building an imaginery around the most random and simple stuff "I can see a liar sitting by the fire" is something a primary school kid could say, word for word

Management: “Guys, we’ve got a slot on the Letterman show!” Noel: “Brilliant - let’s play I Can See a Liar!” Liam: “Yeah! And I’ll wear my flip flops!” Management: “Oh FFS.”

The chorus. I genuinely think if you just change it to I've found my desire, burning like a fire (okay I'm not a songwriter dont pelt me) then you'd easily save the song. I think the verses are cool and Liam's delivery is great. I suppose it does just sum up Noels songwriting at the time though. Lazy and in desperate need of the passion again. Good effort with the words there, personally I'd tweak slightly to 'Awakened my desire, burning like a fire'. But they probably don't fit with the context of the song. Could do with completely new words for the whole track 😂 Always thought ‘sitting on the pyre’ would have worked quite well.

Management: “Guys, we’ve got a slot on the Letterman show!” Noel: “Brilliant - let’s play I Can See a Liar!” Liam: “Yeah! And I’ll wear my flip flops!” Management: “Oh FFS.” They went to one of the most famous shows on USA and they played the worst song on the album.

I'm not native and while first listening I didn't found smth strange with song. I still don't think it's lyrically bad. Even that 'seeing liar sitting by the fire' line is typical Oasis stuff like 'she sniffin' in her tissue selling the Big Issue' or 'you said the brains I had went to my head'
BUT
It's veeery different to whole SOTSOG menu. As that's been said, AC/DC plodding rocker shouldn't be there while album is full of depressing slow songs. That's why it's outta album. I think it could be good in HC tracklist like a good filler instead of, for example, that weirdo called Probably All In The Mind. It's a good filler, I Can See A Liar. Never should be bigger. But it came in a very strange time. Noel's choice FFS

nothing. if liam would releasse it nowaydays, all the fanbois would go crazy. and rightly so, because it's better than anything liam has released to far.
After listening to Shockwave yesterday, I am not sure I can disagree much

Yeah not a fan of Shockwave either. I was listening to Come On Outside earlier and although Noel does a great job on it, that song is perfect for Liam. And is 100x better song than Shockwave.

Dont wanna shit on Liam or Noels solo stuff but sometimes I think some of the newer stuff would be perceived worse on the later albums but I might be wrong.
I mean I happy for Liams comeback after Beady Eye and Noels doing well too but sometimes I wonder whether their best solo stuff is that much ahead of their best on e.g.

What's the fireplace got to do with anything in DLBIA? Seems if you like the song then it paints a picture, but if you don't it's irrelevant. I read years ago in a Noel interview that it was something their mum always used to say to them when she was taking a family photo - “Stand by the fireplace... and take that look off your face!” Thank fuck someone on here knows that. I was just about to waste my time telling this thread exactly that.

I kind of like the song if I’m in the mood but can you imagine what Letterman was thinking watching that after they were there 6 years earlier singing Live Forever?

Noel himself has decleared before the album came out that..."track number 9" could be better about the lyrics at Radio Edge, Toronto. He played 'Who Feels Love' that day with Gem and Mike.

It's not just the bad lyrics, the chorus is the most appalling non-descript melody Noel has ever written.
Anyone could honestly do better, you could simply twiddle two keys on a keyboard and there you have the chorus.
