I'm opening this thread to post and discuss everything about Damon's projects (Solo records, theatre, etc). So we don't have to create a new one every time he puts out a record
_____________________________________________ The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows The Nearer the Fountain, More Pure the Stream Flows is being written and composed entirely in Damon’s house in Reykjavik. It will be performed with a roughly 25-piece orchestra conducted by André de Ridder.
During the past months, other musicians (mostly British + some Icelanders) joined Damon in his house thee times and played together for several days. A spacious living room with huge windows overlooking the sea, Snæfellsjökull glacier and Esja mountain serves as a rehearsal space now. There are instruments, sheets of lyrics and notes on the floor, candles, and Damon’s old typewriter. His new work is all about this place - Damon’s house and what he sees when he looks out the windows. “It’s such a fascinating and ever-changing spectacle" he says. “These windows here are like lenses aimed at the enchanting nature." Legends and fairy tales are another source of inspiration. This broadcast is the first performance of a selection of this new music and comes on the day Albarn was due to start a sold-out 15-date European tour which would have featured conductor André de Ridder and an ensemble of 14 musicians and 4 singers. The performance takes place in Albarn’s home studio The Barn and is his first live appearance this year. That picture of Damon at his piano looking out at the sea is awesome. Wish that was an album cover.

He is best songwriter of this decade so far, one of the best of 90s, 00s and 10s. Always in top 5 or 10 or 20. All new Gorillaz songs are great, I don't think that I know any songwriter that's been relevant in four different decades.

The Nearer The Fountain, More Pure The Stream Flows was originally intended as an orchestral piece inspired by the landscapes of Iceland. This last year has seen Albarn return to the music in lockdown and develop the work to 11 tracks which further explore themes of fragility, loss, emergence and rebirth. The result is a panoramic collection of songs with Albarn as storyteller. The album title is taken from a John Clare poem Love and Memory. Albarn says “I have been on my own dark journey while making this record and it led me to believe that a pure source might still exist.” “I took some of these realtime, extreme elemental experiences of Iceland and then tried to develop more formal pop songs with that as my source" Available on November 12, 2021.Tracklist: 1 The Nearer the Fountain the More Pure the Stream Flows 5:00 2 The Cormorant 4:21 3 Royal Morning Blue 3:12 4 Combustion 2:53 5 Daft Wader 3:28 6 Darkness To Light 2:59 7 Esja 3:41 8 The Tower Of Montevideo 4:19 9 Giraffe Trumpet Sea 1:51 10 Polaris 4:45 11 Particles 3:21 Preorder: damonalbarn.ochre.store/

Just heard Dermot's new tune. It's alright. I like the subtle changes in the instrumental but the song itself is nothing special. Sounds like a track written by someone who was bored. I am intrigued by the ambient mood, though. He could write some good stuff in that lane for the rest of the album. I'll listen when it comes out.

Damon Albarn might be my favourite British musician of all time. He is unrivalled in his creativity and vision, has produced some of the greatest and most interesting music in British history (in my opinion) and yet remains humble. The first two Gorillaz albums are among my favourite ever records, and he’s done incredible stuff with Blur over the years, and their reunion gigs were just phenomenal. Countless side projects all interesting and diverse yet brilliant.

Not much convinced by the first two tracks. They sound atmospheric, they were supposed to be instrumental and it show on the melodies. Maybe the wrong season t0o, it's an album for the fall / winter. I'll try and not listen to the tracks too much until album release. Seems like Graham Coxon is releasing a new album soon too. And maybe Blur next year ? We need more of these guys

Just heard Polaris. Another cool instrumental with a mediocre song on the top of it. I hope the vibe is closer to the first single overall, that hinted at a beautiful sound even if the tune itself was mid. Polaris just feels forgettable. Yeah feels like his solo records are just ad libs melodies recorded in one take. It can be hit or miss but the atmosphere is there. Cant say i've listened to his first solo record much. Weird to say but maybe he produces too much music.

Weird to say but maybe he produces too much music. Song Machine is the only album of his that I've properly enjoyed in the last ten years, to be honest. All of them have great tunes mixed in, especially the Blur one and Humanz, but I just feel like his songwriting seems to be more flashes of inspiration rather than the consistent quality that leads to those even, complete albums. Feel that way even about the "classic" Blur records. That's why I think Gorrilaz is the best medium for him - the collaborators and free artistic style mean he can just stimulate and follow all the best flashes of inspiration that come to him, rather than trying to create one mood on his own - something I've never felt he's capable of doing that in a memorable way. But we'll see. The instrumentals have been nice, at least.

But we'll see. The instrumentals have been nice, at least. Well for Blur it's tricky. they got a lot of good tunes on B sides. Even the strokes joked about it. the only Blur perfect album would be the self titled, and even this one have amazing bsides that deserved a LP spot. And Albarn rejected a lot of Coxon tunes, a bit like George Harrison (and he ended up making great solo records, unlike Damon) As for Albarn "solo" career, The Good the Bad and the Queen is the only one i really cared for. Two interesting records. Never cared much aout Gorillaz, i dont know, it doesn't work for me. Like all geniuses, i think Albarn lacks quality control. He puts out whatever he wants. That can be a good thing, or a very bad thing. Just like McCartney since he's gone solo, there is no one to tell him when something is shit.

I love Everyday Robots so much, it's perfect for this time of year. And I hate when people are calling it depressing, it's not at all, it's calm and beatiful. Listening that album is my yoga and my meditation.

I love Blur and liked his first solo album but this is rather dreary. Thought so too at first, but it's getting to you after a few listens. The melodies are not very obvious. New single, a bit RUMBA
