They’ve done it. Its hit #1. What a way to go out on top. This is so fucking cool! I was always surprised Free As A Bird didn’t go #1 in 1995. First new Beatles song in 35 years. No biggie. Wish Oasis got to #1 with Masterplan. Oh well. Its no surprise, the Beatles werent that popular before the Anthology. It's the anthology (and Oasis) that put them back on the map slowly but surely. And there was a lot of competition back then, imagine competing for a single in 95. Wild.

Really baffled by some of the new Red album additions
This Boy over I Should Have Known Better or I’ll Follow The Sun?
Roll Over Beethoven and You Really Got A Hold On Me over Money or Rock n Roll Music???
I’m Only Sleeping over And Your Bird Can Sing? That one has seemed to grow and grow with esteem. Shocked it was left off.

This Boy over I Should Have Known Better or I’ll Follow The Sun? I must be in the minority then cause I'm over the moon with this choice! This Boy has always been one of my favourite early ones, such a gem

That middle eight in This Boy especially.... maybe the greatest middle eight in music ever, for me at least. This performance on Morecambe & Wise in particular. John Lennon is the greatest male singer ever and when somebody asks me why, I show them this performance of the middle eight at 1.03. Incredible. Haven't posted here since the new song was out. I like it, it's not a great song but I feel the sentiments of it. I do prefer the rough Lennon demo though, mainly because it feels like an echo in time and a period of isolation and reflection in Lennon's life before he was killed. That demo is haunting and poignant and that raw quality will always make it a Lennon solo song as opposed to the group think mentality of The Beatles. I feel the same for Real Love and Free As A Bird. On a sentimental level for the Beatles version, I feel its an attempt at a kind of resolution that Paul never really got with John making it sad for me.

You Really Got A Hold On Me is more known than the other two i'd say. I guess for I’m Only Sleeping it's because its one early "weird" Lennon song compared to the classic to the more classic And Your Bird Can Sing.

For I’m only sleeping I guess they wanted to show the progression in the songwriting I suppose. Or it’s just random choices 😅 plus that song has a very John theme, one of his first criticizing modern society. Roll over Beethoven was kinda a « hit » for George back then it was « his moment » when they played it live, so for this one, it makes total sense. Way more than his original songs . It’s an important song for the Beatles that they played a lot in the early years. A bit like walrus for Oasis.

I like I’m Only Sleeping a lot but “Bird” is such a fun rocker. There is no shortage of fun rockers on the Red album, though. Admittedly, they get less frequent towards the end of the second disc, where some of the energy slips out of John’s stuff in particular, as his drug intake was increasing, but from ‘Please Please Me’ to ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ we now have six fun rockers in a row on this expanded set. That’s another reason why I’m happy about the inclusion of ‘This Boy‘ immediately after: it shows another side to early Beatles for new listeners unaware of the back catalogue.

So, should I re-buy Red and Blue? Asking as a casual Beatles fan here. The recordings I have sound fine to me. Meaningful increase in quality here??

So, should I re-buy Red and Blue? Asking as a casual Beatles fan here. The recordings I have sound fine to me. Meaningful increase in quality here?? The difference in sound quality from the 2009 remasters compared to the remixes from 2017 onwards cannot be overstated. It's absolutely incredible what Giles Martin has done, so I really do recommend switching to the remixes if you're interested in a better listening experience! Edit: just realised you asked if you should buy red AND blue, I thought you said red OR blue! In short, yes - you should DEFINITELY re-buy them and you should also at the very least stream all of the remixed albums (Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, The White Album, Abbey Road and Let It Be). There are literally no words to describe the improvement and I personally credit listening to the remixed versions of those albums with turning me from a casual fan into a fanatic. If you need something to compare the experience for yourself and see what I mean, listen to Dear Prudence 2009 mix and the 2018 mix back to back with headphones. Believe me, you'll get it

Its worth listening, maybe not buying if you are not a die hard fans coz its expensive. Lossless on streaming service + good speakers and you are good to go. And This Boy is such an underrated Beatles song. John voice on it is pure gold.

It’s stunning how under represented John’s white album songs were on the original Blue album. None. Wild. Dear Prudence should have always been there. Shocked Happiness Is A Warm Gun wasn’t added for the reissue. That song has had such a big impact on bands over the last 50 years.

I don’t really know the history of theses comps but to me they look like singles and bsides not on albums and most known tracks from that era. And John’s songs from the white album are not « hits » bar revolution. It’s Paul and George songs that are most known. John songs from this album are « obscure » for non Beatles fans.

It should be noted ‘I’m Only Sleeping (take 1)’ from Anthology 2 is the absolute best version of the song…
God bless.

It's definitely awkward as fuck that "Now and Then" was added to the Blue Album. Thematically it doesn't make any sense. You'd think it would be part of the upcoming (but not announced) Beatles Anthology relaunch......doc plus albums. I guess Peter Jackson isn't ready for it just yet but that is where that song belong, as track 1 on Anthology 3.

So they needed something a bit more to promote it. There wasn't need for it, they could have included all the songs in the albums re-release. My bet is that will also be on Anthology 3. With alternate takes or something. I’m Only Sleeping is generally vastly underrated. Really cool to play on guitar too.

I’ve heard it’s being cleaned and enhanced up for streaming by Peter Jackson. Long over due in my opinion. Much like the Red and the Blue, the albums will be expanded. I’d like Free As A Bird and Real Love to get the MAL treatment. John’s vocals couldn’t be isolated in 1994. This tech could make it more clear. We shall see. I really hope the Rubber Soul reissue comes soon. Curious about the outtakes and alt versions. Stinks that so much of that album is on the Red reissue now. That’s the downside of the Red/Blue reissue. It’s taken the best tracks from 1962-1966, albums they haven’t gotten to yet and are now featured in 2023. Steals some thunder for down the road.

They dont have the appeal of the last ones so my guess is they will release maybe the first 5 together, or Please Please Me / With the Beatles then A Hard Day's Night / Beatles for Sale / Help. But not on their own. Rubber Soul on its own, and another bundle Magical Mystery Tour / Yellow Submarine.

The diehards will always buy, legions of fans still remain. I really only need Rubber, Help and Hard Days Night. Magical Mystery is a great time period but so much of that has been released now between Pepper and Blue reissues. Still want to hear Its all too much cleaned up.

Because if The Beatles were to split up after Help, they'd still have been regarded as one of the greatest and most timeless acts of all time. A Hard Day's Night is their first genuine masterpiece. Arguably the greatest straight up, no frills pop album of all time. There's often this argument amongst pseuds that The Beatles only became great when they became 'serious' and 'arty'. A claim amongst people who use music as a fashion statement rather than actually liking or knowing music.

You wont sell Please Please Me or A Hard Day's Night as much as you will sell the 5336463634Th Abbey Road or SGT Pepper re-release. If that were the case, they would have done it in chronological order. Plus fort the early albums, there is less unheard material, no demos or so few extra tracks. So it makes sense to release bundles.

Some of the new song selections are odd, while I really like You've Really Got A Hold On Me, it doesn't scream 'best of' to me. You can tell a lot of George's stuff is on there because it gives him some representation. I Saw Her Standing There (which sounds amazing on it) and Twist and Shout should have always been on it. I'd have picked I'll Be Back or Things We Said Today over You Can't Do that easily. The biggest miss is why isn't Rain on it. Helter Skelter also should have included over some of the White Album picks. It's a pain that all the new tracks are on the third record on the vinyl version. I'm still loving Now and Then BTW.
