Makes for a rough November! Hehe yeah. I pray every year for new stuff in October or November to cheer me up a bit. Or it's Velvet Underground / Pulp month. December is swing / Jazz / orchestral / Piano based music. I dont know why. May / June is Beach Boys / Mama and Papas time too. I just cant get out of this pattern. Help me. So much good music to listen. Not enough time.

I wonder what Lennon’s take on Michael Jackson snapping up the rights to The Beatles’ catalogue and licensing the songs for use in commercials and so on would have been, had he lived to see it. I comfort myself with the thought that he would’ve torn the little twat apart with a very public tongue-lashing, as only he knew how to deliver.

I comfort myself with the thought that he would’ve torn the little twat apart with a very public tongue-lashing, as only he knew how to deliver. Times changed. When MJ bought up the rights it was still seen as "selling out" to use a song to sell widgets. Songs were a lot more sacred than that. I remember the utter shock when Joe Strummer's disembodied voice was suddenly pimping luxury cars. But now the cat has left the bag and new generations just don't see it as a thing and every artist, even Nobel Prize winners, are selling. Not sure at all where Lennon would have ended up, but I kinda hope he'd have been among those last idealistic holdouts.

I guess, wild guess, Lennon would have been a bit jealous of the relationship between Macca and Jacko. I mean, Macca had written Girlfriend for him, and they then did two (amazing) duos on each other records. Catalog aside, i can hear Lennon snarky comments about all this. I'm glad advertisers never had the chance to use "real" recordings of the Beatles, though, only covers. That save it a bit.

Well, Nike did use the real "Revolution," but that's what made Apple Records sue Jackson for use without their permission and stopped it for the future. Classic Time Magazine quote from the time: "Mark David Chapman killed him. But it took a couple of record execs, one sneaker company and a soul brother to turn him into a jingle writer." Have heard the story that after Julian Lennon covered "When I'm 64" for an Allstate insurance ad, Macca actually met with Jackson to ask him to stop hawking the songs, though honestly, it is hard to imagine that conversation ... In some ways I find the covers worse. It's annoying enough that it's a Beatles song, but then to be half-assed Beatles doesn't make it any better!

Girlfriend, both Macca and Jacko versions (not collabs), are great too.

Well the covers are shit but in some way they manage to keep the Beatles in the spotlight and convert new fans, so that's not entirely a bad thing. The Macca / Jackson collab is like most others Paul had. He wanted in for the music and eventually got screwed. It's amazing how he didn't learn from his mistakes.

Cool video. I prefer Paul's original. The last shot of Paul coming through the door looks far more real. Looks like it's footage from the 66 American tour from the look of his hair( I'm a Beatle-geek). They didn't quite get the hair right in the rest of it.

I’ve listened to all the albums over the past 3 weeks and I’d say my current ranking is
12. Beatles for Sale 11. With the Beatles 10. Let it Be 9. Please Please Me 8. Magical Mystery Tour (marked down as it’s not a real studio album) 7. Hard Days Night 6. Help 5. Sgt Peppers 4. Rubber Soul 3. Abbey Road 2. Revolver 1 White Album
It’ll probably change considerably next time. Truly phenomenal music

Out of the first five I'd say Help is the best, followed by A Hard Day's Night Interesting, of the early albums, I'd say Help is one of the weaker ones. The second half is relatively patchy compared to the other early albums, and McCartney is fairly lightweight on this one, barring the slam dunk Yesterday. Similar to A Hard Day's Night, it's most consistent brilliance comes from Lennon. Speaking of that album, I think A Hard Day's Night is their first true masterpiece. It is Beatlemania in its purest form.

I feel like Help is the natural bridge from Beatlemania to Rubber Soul. Which I prefer to Revolver in some ways.

Out of the first five I'd say Help is the best, followed by A Hard Day's Night I know they are not the same but to be honest, I don't know much about those album, for example if you ask me from which album is ''If I Fell'', I have no idea. I listened to those albums like 15 years ago, I took the songs that I like and to be honest, I never listened to them from start to finish again because they were more collection of songs than proper albums like albums from Rubber Soul to Let It Be. They were the times when I played whole discography but I still don't much about those early albums and which one is better, tracklists etc. But that's just me xD.

I feel like Help is the natural bridge from Beatlemania to Rubber Soul. Which I prefer to Revolver in some ways. Recently I have been favoring Help to Revolver. The song Yellow Submarine is a bit of a let down right in the middle of Revolver. I actually really like the second half of Help even though a lot of people think the track listing of the last two songs is pretty awkward. I really like tunes like It's Only Love or I've Just Seen in a Face. And Lennon sounds great on Dizzy Miss Lizzy.
