Been so sceptical of everything from this band for ages, a real love/hate relationship.... even with latest efforts like ALIENS I never got the ‘experimental’ hype but, hmmmm.......these are brilliant. Like proper good. Pleasantly surprised, very pleasantly surprised. Loving the afrobeat funky vibes on both tunes. Great effort all round. Not sure what to think now, more puzzled than thrilled as it feels like the Coldplay I’d want, but not expect...so I don’t want to get ahead of myself because for all I know, they’ll pull out a fucking Justin Bieber collaboration tomorrow and single handedly destroy the album like they always do. But it’s two more brilliant tunes to add to the Coldplay playlist,. This band is bi-polar.

A good first two steps.
Arabesque reminds me of “Yes” and even “Daylight”. Mostly because it’s so different to everything else in the Coldplay canon just like those tunes are. Sax crimes in progress. The ending reminds me of the climax of Paul McCartney’s “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five”. A little “Tusk” by Fleetwood Mac too. The last minute or so anyways for both. Been a long time since the band was this bold or risk taking.
Orphans is a straight up stadium anthem that will be sung by 50,000 people each night. You can already picture it. Sounds like an evolution of the better parts of AHFOD.
I am torn if I want to hear anymore songs prior to release date. I’m sure another hype song will drop the week prior or something.
I bought the vinyl edition.

I think they’re so talented but they do infuriate when they just do the most appalling, stupid things. Even when you’re almost completely done to the point of no return, they do something to drag you in. Even at their absolute nadir, prancing about promoting a shit bubblegum pop album, they still pulled out an immense Glastonbury performance like in 2016. There’s always that tiny bit of evidence that there is still a spark there. They’re a band that brings the worst out of me, turning me into a curmudgeonly fucker. And yet still, even at their shittiest, even at their absolute low, they’ll still do something to make me smile.

I think they’re so talented but they do infuriate when they just do the most appalling, stupid things the last number of years. Even when you’re almost completely done though to the point of no return, they do something to drag you in. Even at their absolute nadir, prancing about promoting a shit bubblegum pop album, they still pulled out an immense Glastonbury performance like in 2016. And yet still, even at their shittiest, even at their absolute low, they’ll still do something to make me smile. Coldplay, like Kasabian, always killer live. So many god damn hit songs. It’s action packed. What troubled me so much last time around when doing PR for ABFOD was Chris said it was the album Coldplay was always striving to make. Are you kidding me with that utter nonsense?!?!?!? That was the sound you were chasing since 1999? Gimme a break Christopher. It’s your weakest album by a country mile. Now I know artists say stupid shit all the time to sell a record. Remember Beady Eye??? So for me a huge disconnect occurred with Coldplay and their upcoming course of action. Chainsmokers were next. Yikes.

Other than Live 2012, this is the first explicit Coldplay release ever. Chris shouting "same fucking blood!" in the outro of Arabesque. Parental Guidance Necessary. I love to see it.

Starting to appreciate Orphans more, despite a mixed first impression. It's everything we've come to expect from a post-MX Coldplay single, but with that much more of an extra oofmph, both in terms of instrumentation (bass especially!) and lyrically. In fact, the (nicely hidden) dark lyrics of the verses already distinguish it from most pop stuff on the radio. Nice one, Coldplay.

That being said, I'd still rather take an album of Arabesques than an album of Orphans.

I'm suprised at how much I'm digging Orphans. It's radio friendly and modern but the lyricsm is actually well done, it is melancholic and hopeful, instead of being a saccahrine overload of superficial nonsense with a cheesy production.

Arabesque is seriously good, really taking things somewhere else.
Orphans isn't and doesn't.

Like I said earlier, he called it at the time the album and sound Coldplay was always working towards and finally arriving at. I haven’t read anything different. Unlike Noel who will lash out at his Oasis albums years later.

I've been a harsh critic of the last few Coldplay albums
Okay Just heard the single Orphan's and Arabesque and I'm really glad to hear they got rid of that poppy sound and they went back to Viva La Vida era, Orphan's like a more upbeat and fast Strawberry Swing and Arabesque is a nice upbeat tempo number, with tinges of Jazz and Martin singing in French. It's sound's like the band have decided to get back to what people loved about them. Take chances with the sound. From what I've heard so far, it's got me excited so what for their new album, I'm still weary though.
Reading through the comments, no one really likes Orphan's surprising I think it's really good. Arabesque is the stand out though.

My only concern is that like the song Midnight on the Ghost Stories album, it’s a flash in the pan and the rest of the songs sound completely different.
From the few music journalists who have heard the full album they have said its “brave” and like nothing they have done before. I really hope so.
I hope they don’t go sabotaging themselves like they always do.

Midnight, really was a flash in the pan although Ghost Stories for me is the better album from the run of sell out run of albums, aside from Sky Full of Stars which is horrible.

If Mylo Xyloto is a sell-out album, I hope Chris continues to sell-out as long as possible. One of the best pop albums of the decade.

But i thought it was a massive step down from Viva La Vida. Less of Mylo Xyloto and more Viva La Vida please. I don't want to see any more Rihanna's or pop star's on any more records.

It's also fine if you dislike it. If you don't like pop influences in their music, that and Ghost Stories must be very antithetical to your taste - but that's not the same as them selling out. If you're in the market for a colourful, arty, vibrant pop record, Mylo has pretty clearly been crafted to be as good as anything else out there. For me, I think it achieves it beautifully, and is essentially the futuristic sequel to Viva's more historical take on art-pop. I'd even say that if you put Moving to Mars on there, it's the second-best Coldplay album.

Mylo Xyloto feels so sterile, its easy to see the link between that and A Head Full of Dreams as the logical conclusion to that direction. Reluctant to call anyone 'sell-outs' as its often used against bands or artists who are just looking for something a little different but the two albums I mentioned above always felt to me like Coldplay trying to keep themselves in the stadiums.

Not having Stargate produce it plays a big role. Orphans would meet the same fate as Hymn for the Weekend and Everglow if produced by Stargate. No need for that, less is better sometimes.
