This is exactly what we deserve from Liam at this point in time. Something slick, epic, different, and catchy at the same time. It doesn't cull from the same dry wells of 60s/Lennon influences that we're so used to hearing from Liam. And, above all, it's got true spontaneity that Once, The River, and Shockwave all sorely lack.
Couldn't agree more. This sounds fresh, energetic, inspired. Probably the first song from this album that doesn't have the distinct sound of professional songwriting on it, and I mean that in a good way. It's single-handedly raised my hype levels back up for the album; if the non-singles can keep this sense of imagination and movement, then we're in for some definite treats.

Very nice summer tune, LOVE the ending. And btw about Gertie reference... Maybe somebody have already mentioned it, I read it somewhere on twitter. Noel and Gertie is a musical. So it's just a nice little joke I guess
Yeah wasn’t it about Noel Coward and Gertrude someone? I would never have made the connection!
Yes, it's about Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence. I also wouldn't make this connection. I like this nod, it's smart and subtle

Someone mentioned that they didn't like how it seemed to lack obvious structure, like verse, chorus, middle eight, etc. Funny thing, that's actually one of my favorite things about One of Us. I like being lost in a song, I don't want a song to so obviously tell me "this is a verse" or "this is a chorus". I don't want to be able to predict exactly where a song will go from just hearing the first few seconds. Having an unconventional song structure keeps you on your feet. It allows for more surprises, it keeps you guessing about what's gonna come next. It takes a lot of skill to pull off the traditional verse-chorus-verse structure well. Wall of Glass, and many other Liam songs do the traditional structure fantastically, but when it's not done correctly it makes the song sound rigidly locked in (see: Shockwave). But One of Us rises above all that, and instantly becomes one of Liam's best solo songs.
Couldn't agree more.
I said way back I wanted more songs in the general style of IDHTBTW on this album.
Not nessecarily in terms of the sound, but just how they're put together, and how it means Liam's great vocals can be used in a different way.
Shockwave to me is a lot of angry shouting and while it's catchy, I honestly don't go back and listen to it. Same with Once. I just feel like that is trying so hard to be something, even if the raw emotion of the song and the chorus is worthy of a real epic.
The River is a good stomper though and I don't mind that. But I just hope One Of Us sets the general tone for the rest of the album. I really want this to be the path Liam takes. He can push his boundaries.

Some folks on youTube are transcribing the lyric as "you angrily said" and now I can't I hear it. Doesn't explain 'round your " heads" though lol
Unsophisticated aren’t they, is why 😂
“It seems one simply had to have a wisp of smoke haloing one's head back among the oh-so-sophisticated jet set that Coward chronicled in the '30s and '40s. So there's plenty of lighting up and puffing and blowing of smoke rings written into his scripts and, therefore, seen onstage.” cr. Washington Post

First listen. Hate funky groove rithm like Wall of glass, and absence of a Guitar solo.
But is good. Waiting for live versione, but to me is under Once and The River( yes, more time flies and more i like It). To me fights with shockwave for 3place.
Just nice little tune. It's like She's Electric on WTSMG - it's okay but nothing more. Just a little better than a filler. Can't hear smth 'epic'. Chorus is catchy, Noel's references are okay but...
Also the second song with strange echo - didn't like 'Once'-echo in Once and don't like this 'eeehhh' here
After 5 or 6 listens it's on The River highs but far from Shockwave and Once levels. Very far. Definitely 1st time when Noel's latest song is better than Liam's one
She's Electric, "okay but nothing more" ??!
"It's like She's Electric on WTSMG - it's okay but nothing more" - read this again, I meant it by WTSMG standarts, little tune that completes album but never huge like classics. Probably weakest in WTSMG but overall it's tune. So One Of Us for me feels the same - I don't feel it'll reach even I've All I Need highs 'cause it's more a filler. Good tune but... it's just bridge between Shockwave and Once. Just like She's Electric is a bridge between Cast No Shadow and Morning Glory
I like the song but it's just okay. The words don't fit the melody and there's way too much autotune. It's clear his voice is in worse condition compared to As You Were and the supposedly slick production only highlights this.
The vocals on this album are going to be 1000 times better
btw to much autotune? I don't hear it
They're not going to be "1000 times better." His lost a bit of his upper range again and so far the recordings of the new songs have shown this as well. There's a reason he couldn't sing Bold both at Glastonbury and MTV Unplugged. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying his voice is shit again but Glastonbury showed his voice is getting worse again.
If you're not hearing the autotune I can't really help you with that though. His voice lost all of its edge on the recordings due to overcompressing, autotune and other filters and in One Of Us they've added more reverb the end of the sentences to cover up for him not holding the notes long enough. If you're not hearing this it most likely won't ruin the recording but for me I find it hard to sit through it as it's just as bad as your average pop vocal on the radio nowadays. They strip away all emotion just to make sure it's as generic as can be.

The record should have been called Why Me, Why Bot ? really
I like the instrumental, but One of Us is just relaying on the same point as once but with more blatant Oasis callbacks. I suppose this is the ChinaTown of WMWN? Just there. Not saying its a bad thing, but I dont like it as much as I should.
When I first listened to this yesterday I didn’t like it. I think that was down to me listening to it in a parking lot out of my phones speaker, I didn’t even get through the full song. Listening to it this morning and I’ve completely changed my mind, this is great, that choir is amazing. I like that I can actually hear the bongos as well. I do agree though that this is too short, he could have done more with it.

No Download Code from the official shop - like every time...
As I did not get any song after "Shockwave" I preordered the mp3 album at Amazon and they are kind enough - this time! - to deliver the new songs in time. It's not that I'm rich, but through circumstances I ended up buying "As you were" 4 times, so no big deal.
At least I got the codes for the concert presale by preordering on the official site, so there is that.

For sure. I'd also like to hear something a little newer and more adventurous from Liam given that he's been recording in the same style for a long time now. I'm not expecting nor asking for anything as different for Liam as WBTM was for Noel but something just enough out of his comfort zone like IDHTBTW or One of Us is what he should be aiming for.
Contrast that with the dud of the lot for me, Shockwave. Like Black Star Dancing (which was released around the same time) I thought it was nice enough at first but strangely for Gallagher songs both of them only got worse with repeated listens. Sure, Shockwave's got a nice melody and all, but now it feels so much like an attempt to emulate Wall of Glass. The exact same tone, lyrical themes, even the harmonicas make the song seem stuck in WOG's shadow. This wouldn't be a problem if Shockwave was an absolute banger, but as it is it feels like it's trying so damn hard to make another snarling rocker lead single that it feels hopelessly trapped in a formula. Almost like For What It's Worth. It feels overcooked where Wall of Glass is urgent (I believe the album version of WOG is the demo anyway?). WOG has fangs. Shockwave doesn't.
Luckily Once, The River, and especially One of Us are stronger tunes. I'm hoping there will be more songs in the vein of One of Us, but given that 3 out of the 4 songs already released are in the same style Liam's been singing for years, I'm not gonna hold my breath too much. Just hope for the best you know?

On the genius lyrics page, it's got the lyrics as 'you angrily said with a smoke ring round your head'. While this actually makes sense I don't hear it
