I was considering it. I’ve done Arcade Fire and Radiohead before. Even BorePlay. I’m still spinning it. A lot going on within this record. Terrific lyrics the more you visit. Alright, then, what's your favourite lyric so far? Mine's gotta be "Technological advancements really bloody get me in the mood!" from the title track. "And I never thought, not in a million years, that I'd meet so many Lolas" "There are things that I just cannot explain to you, and those that I hope I don’t ever have to" "Hokey Cokey with the opposite sex" "I'm a big name in deep space, ask your mates" "Mark speaking"

At first I thought album is just solid but for some reason I can't stop playing it ffs. I don't know, there's some magic in that I can't explain. It's getting better and better each hour
Also I look totally embarrassing doing all those really high "ooooooohs"

Few more listens in and it’s got me. Better than AM. Star treatment, title song, American sports and four out of 5. Turner sounds great on it. Genius!
7.5/10 now!
Fave albums by Arctics after reappraisal and listening to entire back catalogue today at work.
Wpsiamtwin - 9/10 TBHC - 7.5/10 FVN - 7/10 AM - 7/10 Humbug - 6.5/10 SIAS - 6/10
Bastard Turner’s got me hooked. An lp with so few choruses has me hooked.
Well done lad

Conclusive evidence Noel will never really change his songwriting up; he'll just keep writing the same songs he's been writing for over 20 years, but maybe they'll sound a bit different on the surface (like having a French woman chatting over the top, or a tin whistle playing).

Yeh but he's not wrong about the album not having any choruses is he? Four Out Of Five is the only one that has a remotely catchy chorus. That's what makes the album difficult to listen to for me. I do like it and the direction they've gone in, but the songs have no definition. They all just melt into each other - which in of itself is fine - but when you get five in a row doing that, without any choruses in any of them - it's fairly jarring. Noel's ability to write a banging chorus for the most mundane of tunes is what makes songs like Little By Little etc come alive. Parts of the album - like American Sports, She Looks Like Fun and Science Fiction - I really like. But the rest is so-so, for me. Four Out Of Five is one of my favourite Monkeys songs though. Had it on repeat for the last 5 days. Love it.

It's a really snobbish way to look at things that 'have choruses' as being a standard way of writing. It's why bands are utter shite - they can't write a decent chorus. They're what make a song great.
Arctic Monkeys don't have that problem, so it's why it is a surprise they've gone completely away from them for most of the album.
A lot of the songs have neat little refrains or phrases that are repeated, though, and while that works in the context of the album, I think it'll be the main obstacle when it comes to getting these songs across to a large arena audience in a live setting.

Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is way better than Who Built the Moon. Whether it has choruses or not.

I don't get this notion that the album lacks choruses or hooks. I don't even love the album, but after about three listens all the way through I find myself constantly humming along to lyrical bits and melodies from almost all of the songs, even those I don't care too much about. Mostly the chorus of "She looks like fun", and yesterday I almost went crazy from the line "cute new places keep popping up" being constantly replayed in my head.

It’s quite surprising that they haven’t gone down the pop route that Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Train, Muse, etc went down. I would’ve thought this new album would have been even more accessible than AM, but it isn’t at all

Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino is way better than Who Built the Moon. Whether it has choruses or not. Easily. In a different league altogether to WBTM.

Well, Coldplay first two albums show way more songwriting talent than anything Turner has ever put out.

Chris Martin has written about five genuinely good songs in his career. Maybe one or two more, but definitely less than ten.

Alex is a great lyricist, and on this album he seems to incorporate Jarvis Cocker, and also this album sounds a bit like Pulp, but even Jarvis knew how to put great chorus and some more variation between songs.

Martin lost the plot for about ten years but yeah he was definitely a more talented songwriter than Turner. And I've never been a Coldplay fan.

I would’ve thought this new album would have been even more accessible than AM, but it isn’t at all Muse didn't really go pop. They just aren't as good as they were About choruses. I don't really care. Song can be good with or without them and this album is good without them
