Loving this album! Listened to it a fair bit over this week and I admit it does take a few listens to click. All the dark fruits/courteeners lads are in meltdown!

The first half is great imo, Star Treatment and One Point Perspective are nice smooth tracks, American Sports may be my favourite on it, Golden Trunks ins't that great but gives the album a much needed variation, but the two best songs are definitely the title track and 4/5.
The second side however is boring as hell, there isn't much variation, they sound so similar, it's the same slow midtempo melodies, they kind of blend with each other.

This was pretty much my reaction too, having never listened to any of their albums before. I love the new "lounge-pop" style and sound but the songs on the second half didn't really stick with me.

Not going to write off straight away, will definitely need to give it a couple of listens. However really did nothing at all for me first time around. Very samey throughout, only song that I really enjoyed was Four Out Of Five.

It is SO BORING. Obviously just my opinion, but I’m currently on a road trip and was anticipating this album for the drive, but it’s putting me to sleep

I like the lazy, cinematic feel, but the melodies aren't that diverse or memorable.
edit: I still enjoy this one more than AM or Suck It and See.

I don’t think I’ve been as disappointed in an album since Heathen Chemistry. This isn’t an AM album. Turner should have released this as a solo album.

I wonder how the other band members feel being relegated to the bench basically. I know when Radiohead was making Kid A, Colin, Ed and Phil often fealt out of place and searching for a purpose when the band went down an untraditional road.

Track order doesn't help I feel. Bring She looks like fun and Batphone closer to the front maybe leading with the title track or 4 out of 5 would help the album. Star treatment a poor choice as an opener for me, too dreary sets a dull tone.

At least the singer doesn't look like a 12 year old anymore...
God bless.

Think Tank was a hell of a lot better than this. It is growing on me though.

No matter what you think of this album, two things are clear. 1: This is an Alex Turner solo album. 2: To come out with this type of album after a five year break is a bit weird. And I think I would have said that even if I would have loved the album.

I think exactly the opposite haha. The title track reminds me of 'One' by U2 when Turner's vocals kick in. I'm glad they've done something different. They were never living up to AM. That's a once or twice in a lifetime record (like their debut in fairness, or Oasis' first two albums) so I'm glad he's gone completely out there - even if just to get it out of his system. Ultimately though it doesn't have the songs to have any longevity, though.

AM is a masterpiece
Just because something hit mainstream doesn't make it bad, ffs
This doesn't come close to that album, but if they had have managed that in fairness you'd be looking at major league rock stars.
Four Out Of Five, Science Fiction, She Looks Like Fun - I think they're all really decent tracks, but a lot of the others sound exactly the same.

And I think I would have said that even if I would have loved the album. It's not been a five year break for Tuner, though. As someone commented before the album came out, he's written a Last Shadow Puppets record and co-written Alexandra Saviour's debut in that time. I wonder if he isn't a bit creatively tired by this point? Songs like 'Golden Trunks' make me think he probably is a wee bit. There's not a great deal of melody going on there.

This is the experimental album that Noel thought he was releasing. In terms of experimentation, this is as experimental as it gets. For an indie rock band to release something like this is pretty spectacular.
Been a monkeys fan since their first album... grew up with them - adore them. However, I'm not a huge fan of this one. Doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not what I wanted from their new album. Not completely unexpected, though, based on TLSP's second album.
Will definitely lose them more fans than it gains.
The biggest pro I can give the album, is that it encourages you to listen to it in its entirety. There are no "singles" as such. I could listen to any other monkeys song in an isolated situation... not sure there are many songs on this album (4/5, The Ultracheese and OPP excluded) that warrant hearing on shuffle.
It's a decent album, just not what I was hoping for.

Arctic Monkeys have been shocking post-Humbug.
These last 3 albums are so lackluster.

Title track is intriguing but the chorus isn’t there and lets it down. Damn.

Arctic Monkeys always struggled with doing slow songs dating right back to their first album.
So what they do? They release an album full of slow ass songs. Okay.

I've only ever listened to 2 Arctic Monkey's songs nearly a decade apart so I can't comment. Any suggestions for songs?
