A lot of the bands people have mentioned in this thread I heard growing up whenever my dad wanted to play music. But I far preferred it when he put on Jean-Michel Jarre, Laurie Anderson, Kraftwerk, Philip Glass, or Massive Attack.

I have a soft spot for Guns n' Roses, they were huge in my teens, they were everywhere, radio, movies, mtv, I'm not a fan of theirs and never listened to any of their albums but they have some quality songs.
Slash's guitar solo on this song just get inside my soul.

Not even Rumours? You should check it out. You'd love the second song, 'Dreams'. Stevie Nicks has the sultriest voice, it's fucking great. Also, I'd argue Physical Graffiti is a better Led Zep album than IV. And maybe Led Zeppelin II is, too. Was just about to press the like button, but then I read the second paragraph which I really can't agree with For me I and II are the best Zeppelin albums

Mainly, bands that you haven’t listened to more or less ever! Mine, there’s plenty more, of course (Noel would be ashamed that I don’t have any of these in my collection!): Rolling Stones AC/DC Pink Floyd Led Zepplin The Who Fleetwood Mac The DoorsGuns N Roses Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)The Eagles Boston The Byrds Styx Bob DylanBruce Springsteen (too fucking American, aye) you really should listen to these...

you really should listen to these... I don't like AC/DC, but I'd also take the Byrds! They were great. yeah, the byrds were alright, but theyre on the same level as the eagles & styx for me. good bands, but at least a level below the who, dylan, stevie nicks etc... AC/DC rock. hard. altho they shouldve quit when scott died...

Replying because I just tried listening to Styx, coincidentally and someone liked 2 posts of mine is this thread so it came up.
Yeah, I don't like Styx very much. It doesn't grab me at all.

I don't know if I've heard enough from them to make a completely fair judgment, but The Eagles are soooo overrated. And Hotel California might be the most overrated song in the world, containing the most overrated guitar solo as well. Still annoyed that they were in the Rolling Stone "100 greatest artists" issue, while for example The Smiths were left out. An Americentric(if that's not a word it should be) publication of course, but still not a valid excuse. For me, Nothing Else Matters is even worse than Hotel California when we talk about those big classic rock songs. Shit verses, shit chorus, if wrote it I wouldn't even be proud about it. Songs like that are very dull and uninspiring, they all have big and long intros and shit like that, huge production etc. They are wrote and produced in that way that you are not even allowed to doubt it if that is one of the biggest songs of all time. And fans of those songs are especially annoying. They are always ready to say that there is no good music today, and when they say today they mean in last 25 years, and all they listen and think that it is best music ever is songs like Hotel California, Nothing Else Matters, All Right Now by Free and shit like that.

Doesn't that song belong to another category though? I mean, Hotel California(I think) is one of those songs that is praised by both the mainstream as well as the critics, while Nothing Else Matters(I think, once again) only gets proper credit by mainstream people who say things like "I don't even like rock music, but that's a nice one". As for the song, I don't really mind it. Cheesy of course, and it sucks that it's the one they're most known for, but a decent melody and a nice solo at the end to save it.

I agree with a lot of the op. I can appreciate that those bands/artists are good. They just do nothing for me. I never feel the need to listen to them and when I do I feel nothing. No emotion, no thrill, just sounds like background music. I like some stuff by The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, ELO and The Doors but I never go out of my way to play them. Springsteen, AC/DC, Led Zeplin, Boston, The Who and Guns and Roses I don't like at all baring the odd, obvious widely played tune. The rest i'm totally indifferent to.
Of all the bands listen in this thread my problem with most of them is that i just don't like the singer(s.) That's the main stumbling black i have when getting into a band. If I don't like the singer's voice I'll never be able to enjoy their work.

I don't mind Hotel California, but I never got the appeal either. One of the greatest songs ever? Really? Why? Why does it always make the top 5? I think it's dull Don't like Nothing Else Matters either. That guitar solo is IMO one of the worst I've ever heard in a well known song.

Regarding Hotel California. I lived in Cali when it was released. Could not get away from it Always thought it was overrated, bar this little noticed Joe Walsh gem.

I can't help but sense some symbolism from that closing solo on Hotel California. The Ramones had released their first album the same year, and The Eagles was one of the bands that so many peoole (mostly young kids) were tired of. So while that song and its success might have represented the height of "classic rock"(well, at least to some), it really was the last dying breath. Those meandering and essentially pointless solos had to go, and punk was the response.

There is some merit to that but, at this time kids (I was one then) were also listening to Kiss, Aerosmith, Geils, Cooper and Ted (I know, massive dickhead). When punk first went more mainstream here, that crowd would alternate that with old school country. Merle Haggard, Cash and such. So as to completely set themselves apart from the main stream. Don't be mistaken, in America anyway, it was a small subset at the time. Wasn't too much into old school country then, but loved the Pistols. They just seemed like a more raw rock to me then. Tough sell in the neighborhood for a majority of rockers. Still have a soft spot for old Kiss and Cooper

I find it funny how "classic bands" as used in everyday conversation and in this thread invariably refers to "70s white rock 'n' roll bands that my parents show their age by saying they love". The truth is that there are so many other bands from the 70s of all sorts of styles and genres that were as influential or more so than those so-called classic bands. Examples: Joni Mitchell, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Kraftwerk, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Can, Brian Eno, etc. Those are far more worth your time. I mean, every minute spent listening to Styx is a minute wasted. And why bother owning Hotel California when you're assaulted by the title track and New Kid in Town every time you turn on the radio?

Yeah, "Nothing Else Matters" is a shit song. Awful chorus. No worse than Bohemian Rhapsody though.
