Last week our matt brought this great news to us, a new project by talented Erland Cooper. Erland is the front man of Erland and The Carnival and also from The Magnetic North. and his new project is called "Maalie" 1. Maalie 2. Maalie over Marwich Head 3. Maalie - Wilburns Rethink Erland Cooper
‘Maalie’ is the first music to be released from a new project by multi-instrumentalist Erland Cooper, also of The Magnetic North and previously Erland & The Carnival. Having grown up on the Scottish archipelago of Orkney, Erland wrote this work as a response to ease anxiety and claustrophobia working in a city. It explores the borders between electronic, alternative and classical music whilst creating for him and the listener a work of balance and calm - a kind of liminal space.
Erland's belief is that when creating music, it often reflects the landscape a musician is surrounded with in some small way, be it rural or urban, real or imagined.
"This music is a call to my roots, whether physically on a boat into Stromness pier head or in my mind” on reflecting in an increasingly claustrophobic London underground. “I wanted it to evoke the spirit of home and provide a sense of transport to that place, finding some isolated peace in an at times, really messed up world.”
MAALIE - OFFICIAL VIDEO Visual artist Alex Kozobolis has shot and directed a film in Orkney to coincide with this release. Watch it on the link below. The artwork photo was taken this summer by Joanne Rebecca Coates on the Orkney fishing boat Keila, just west of Shetland.
You can read more about the background to the music and watch this film on a special feature over at the Quietus here.
thequietus.com/articles/23635-erland-cooper-new-video-watchMaalie’ is the local 'Orcadian' dialect for the gull-like Fulmar, a grey and white seabird that's related to the albatross.
The original track is accompanied by a solo piano version titled ‘Maalie Over Marwick Head’ and a ‘Rethink by Will Burns’, which is an evocative recital from Faber Poet & Caught By The River Poet-In-Residence.
You can listen back to Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC6 Music, premiere the music to the world right here.
If you're interested in knowing any more about the project, head over to the new website below.
I hope you will enjoy this new journey as it takes flight.www.erlandcooper.com/I've just purchased this release. Less than 2 Euro's for these gorgeous songs. www.musicglue.com/erland-cooper/shop

Does Weller feature on this album mimmihopps? He's a big champion of Erland's music. Here's the image of the Keila fishing trawler. When you are surrounded by wild and tumultuous seas like this when living on an island, it makes the landscape you live in seem ever more intimate and cut off from the rest of the world. In that sense, isolation and solitude in such wilderness is something that offers great opportunity for contemplation and reflection. This is only something you realise the moment you leave for a big city, but when I go back at Christmas, it is something I sure as hell will never take for granted ever again. This is an incredibly evocative piece of music that totally captures those feelings and I can't wait to hear the full album.

He even let Erland and The Carnival support him at RAH for 6 nights in 2010. I don't think he joined in this EP in a digital form as it has only 3 songs, but Weller said in his recent interview that he's worked with Erland recently, so I take Erland joined Weller's new album.

New single by the talented Erland Cooper "Shalder". Absolute beautiful, matt. ‘Shalder’ is the second single to take flight from Erland Cooper's new, forthcoming album.
This work features ambient guitar from renowned guitarist, Leo Abrahams and a delicate performance on the Norwegian Hardanger violin by Charlotte Greenhow.
"It’s a beautiful, ornate instrument with additional resonating or ringing strings that sit underneath the others, creating a darker tone and drone, especially when played really slowly and really quietly." - ErlandSHALDER - OFFICIAL VIDEO Filmmaker Alex Kozobolis shot and directed the video in Orkney on a trip with Erland in October. He also took this artwork photo while they sheltered from gale force winds, in a RSPB bird hide on ‘The Loons’, Orkney.
The Skinny exclusively premiered the Shalder video and wrote a short article which you can see on the Skinny's website:
www.theskinny.co.uk/music/new-music/erland-cooper-shalder-video-premiere
"Shalder is the local Orcadian dialect for the Oystercatcher, others include the Skolder, Cholder, Chaldro, Skeldro, Scottie & Sea Pie! It’s a stocky, wader bird with a long, orange bill and pinkish legs. I recall sitting on the bench at the Bay of Skaill watching them scoot around like kids with a football, kicking up the sand in search of cockles & muscles. I often reflect on that if I’m on the tube." - Erland
Erland was invited as a guest editor by RunRiot for a special 'interview without questions' with Scottish writer and artist Clare Archibald.

Following radio play across the BBC, including Iggy Pop's first show of the year! You can now catch Erland's first live solo performance and session on BBC6 with Marc Riley on March 27th, don't forget to tune in!

I listened to this last week Mimmi, it’s incredibly beautiful and very evocative of home.
Reminds me very much of Sigur Ros this project (a bit more intimate mind). Can’t wait for the full album!

Still yet to purchase this album mimmi, but my tickets for his gig in London came today. I envy you so much that you're going to see him in London, matt! Enjoy every second of his gorgeous music and please tell me about it afterwards. Here's Erland performing 3 tracks from his brand new first solo album & interview on Mark Riley show, BBC 6 Music last week. Cattie-Face Maalie Over The Marwich Head Solan Goose www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p062l1t4Out Lines and Erland Cooper are the most fascinating musicians for me at the moment. It's been 8 years since when I discovered Erland and The Carnival at London Calling. This guy never bores me.

Been enjoying this album in the sun the last couple of days mimmihopps. It’s something that seeps and crawls into your conscience without being very direct and distracting, meaning I’ve been relaxing and just reading while this plays in the back of my mind. I love albums like these, with their impressionistic song structures and rich sonic textures. They are some of my favourite albums ever, like U2’s Unforgettable Fire or Sigur Ros’s Valtari and what they all have in common is landscape and a real physical environment. So like the rugged Irish coastlines that influenced the sounds on Unforgettable Fire or the towering fjords in Iceland for Valtari, this one is influenced by the Orkney landscape. It’s incredible how environments influence great music, and this is a continuation of that without explicitly restricting it to those who have experienced that particular environment. The sense of contemplation and imagination that this music evokes makes it accessible to all.

New EP "Nightflight" out today. From his mailing list: We are excited to announce that Erland's new EP Nightflight is released today. Nightflight reworks and evolves the layers and melodies of Solan Goose into an 'ambient-techno' idiom.
Erland says of Nightflight: "This is music for the community of the city and of the dancefloor, but it was also inspired by the rituals of migratory birds who often embark on their momentous journeys at night when the air is clearer and cooler, and their circadian clocks are sparked by cues from the sunset."
WHERE WE'VE BEEN In live news, Erland played WOMAD, Port Eliot, The Good Life Experience, Kenilworth Arts, and Timber Festivals over the summer period, which was a blast. Thank you to all the festival organisers for having us and the audiences who came to support us.
The band made a radio first at The Good Life Experience (!) with BBC Radio Wales’s Bethan Elfyn and BBC Radio 6Music’s Chris Hawkins creating some magic in an off-the-cuff live interview which was scored live and included a reading from one of Erland's collaborators, the Faber New Poet Will Burns. You can listen again here. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0000f9z
Solan Goose started its flight on the Spring Solstice at Walthamstow Wetlands and finished the year at the stunning NWT Cley Marshes Nature Reserve, where the geese joined us overhead before the set, making a perfect end to the year.
RETURNING HOME Erland also journeyed back home to Orkney to compose new material, gather field recordings, and be filmed for a documentary on his work. The team were out at sunrise until sunset, capturing the sea, the earth and the air of the archipelago.
Erland and the band also rocked up to play the SAY Awards. You can watch their performance here (from about 34 mins in).
FINAL WORDS In very exciting news, Erland has been invited to take part in a major commission as composer in 2019. We can’t wait to share the details with you soon.
Erland has also been writing with the legendary Paul Weller on his album True Meanings. Earlier this month, Erland joined Paul onstage at two sell-out shows at London's Royal Festival Hall to perform the song 'White Horses'.

When I chatted to him, he was referencing it in the past tense - maybe I’m thinking too much into that. It was basically a solo endeavour anyhow, and I’m pleased to be getting new material from him quite frequently now. How would you rank all his efforts, in terms of what is your favourite incarnation of Erland?

Yet I still love their debut album. It was and still is a brilliant, quite experimental record. Maybe I would still place E&TC as my most favourite work by Erland. I would have wanted to hear his work with Magnetic North more. What about you, matt?
