Don't understand why he goes so "soft" and poppy while talking about him being so rock n roll. Give me some more of that Shockwave-vibe but even grittier and more attitude and garage rock. With Noel filling up the space of "harmless rock/pop for the middle aged couple while them making supper" there is a void to be filled with a rawer, more Definitely Maybe sound. This sounds very record company-made. A bit lame and strive to be nice and radio friendly. That’s what it is It’s a typical major label release in 2019, written with hired songwriters. No different to any middle of the road pop/rock record made today under those circumstances, it just happens to have Liam’s name and voice on it instead of someone else’s. I know he contributed too but in many ways this could be anyone else’s album. That’s not knocking Liam, it’s just the way it goes when you sign a deal with a major these days. Not to say his albums are bad, it’s just missing a lot of authenticity and the reason is that if he wasn’t singing some of these songs, someone else probably would be, in some form or other. But that’s how the game works when you work with hired writers.

But in this instance I would have preferred some Meaning of Souls and Hung in a Bad Places.... (Glimmer is a nice little tune btw)

I actually don't mind the "disneyish" vibe to that record. He's at Warner, he has proffesional songwriters. The record is cheesy, commercial, but in a way it's honest, it's not trying to be anything else than an answer to 16 year olds that has just discovered their John Lennon. And yes, Liam with his parkas and his walk is a product of pop culture, in fact he has always been. I'm fine with it, it's part of his career, he seems to be enjoying it, the album is fun to listen. And if you miss punk rock and soul and real, you can always play this : Liam's character is as part of the product as the music. I think this is something deliberate and a trend in modern music business. You can also see in the big stars like Beyonce or Taylor Swift. The lyrics of their albums and the stories in their videos relate to their real life (or at least to the "real life" as portraited by the media). So you get a full Beyonce album talking about Jay-Z's infidelity or a Taylor Swift album about his publicized love affairs. Or a Liam's album talking about his relationship with Noel and the "back to ashes" narrative that 'As It Was' also supported. The music and the narrative go together This does not mean it's neccesarily unsincere or musically bad. Actually Lemonade and WMWN are both good. And you can argue that it always was a bit like that, but now I think it is more obvious and deliberate

I guess you can in a way compare it to Gem or especially Andy Bell writing music for Liam as well, with the difference of course being they were in the same band. But they also wrote the words to fit with Liam's public persona and Liam singing them (for example 4LW and TBGO).

I think the whole swaggerish thing is overblown, especially musically. When I picture Liam and Swagger, it was him looking cool singing pop-ish songs.
When I think of Liam with "swagger" in music, I think of Man of Misery. Liam has always been at his best singing songs like CS or SCHYHO. If people are looking for the raw sound of DM or the bloated sound of BHN, I mean those were over two decades ago.
This whole Liam snarl rock n roll thing. To mean it means in the 2000s when his voice was the worst and he had to sing angry and raspy cause that was all he could muster. I don't get it, I don't get the desire for it.
Can anyone give me more examples? The Meaning of Soul? Eyeball Tickler? Ain't Got Nothing? Is this swaggerish snarly rock n roll Liam?

I totally agree with this. It must be the record label setting up some rules for how they want the album as it's very Sainsbury's friendly hence all the Take That and Bryan Adams similarities. The only song with balls on the album is Invisible Sun. Luckily the beauty of choice is you don't have to listen to it. Although I'm sure your comments on it will far outstrip your listens. Ok, well let's close this forum then if we can't discuss 🤷🏼♂️ I'd LOVE Liam to make a big ballsy album instead of being kept firmly put in the "Lilly Allen" lane. He's even said himself he'd like to do a punk album! Liam, for me, is attitude, swagger and balls out. Look at his Twitter, he's full of it. "I can still muster up that Rock'n'roll temper" then show us for fooks sake instead of singing songs about lights on Broadway 🤘🎸 Granted, these songs aren't bad, but there's 1000 more times Liam in a song like Meaning Soul than any of these - anyone could be singing them. P.S. you're right, I can choose not to listen

It's the attitude Liam sings with. This Is The Place sung by Liam would be a monster. DYou Know What I Mean sung by Liam is a monster. Supersonic... My Big Mouth... Hopefully (for me) his new songs will be more authentic live.

Like did late 80s Paul give us a I Saw Her Standing There (maybe he did, I'm not familiar with 80s Paul)?

The more polished sound is just a product of the age we live in I think.

Listened a few times now. I'm still not 100% sure I like it that much.
Shockwave 6.5/10 Did its job as lead single but well below the standard Wall Of Glass set last time One Of Us 7.5/10 This did grow on me after I wasnt that fussed when I first heard it. The bass and gospel bits are the best bits of the song Once 9/10 Sill probably my favourite, I really like the instrumental break bit which I know is marmite for people. Just think it makes the final chorus have more impact. Now That I Found You 6/10 The stripped back unplugged version seems better to me. Halo 6.5/10 A decent Bring The Light Why Me Why Not 8/10 The most obviously written verses by Liam on the album, then given a great chorus. This was the template I wanted for the album but not sure how much of it was written in that way. Be Still 5.5/10 I love IDHTBTW from the bonus songs off AYW and this is similar but not as good. Alright Now 6/10 Tbh this one I kind of can't remember how it goes Meadow 6/10 Quite nice really. The River 8/10 Man I've grown to love this tune. The guitars and different structure, it kind of does the same job as BOTMI at the end of Chasing Yesterday. Gone 8.5/10 Great finish to the album. Very 007 sound to it.
Of the bonus tracks, Misunderstood is the only track I actively dislike. The other two you can easily swap with anything from the actual album.
Overall I'd say 6.5 or 7/10. I wish there was more heavy guitar and less effects on Liam's vocals. Nothing wrong with pop songs but Oasis was basically great pop music at its core played loud and Liam elevating them with his unique voice. There is some nice guitar and bass work, I just want more!

Not really bothered by what his clothing choices are or how rawk the songs are (Oasis were never the heaviest sounding band). I just haven't been able to stop listening to this album since it leaked, I think it's amazing. Every song has a great hook of some sort that sticks with me ... the album is perfectly ordered, I find even songs I wasn't enamored with initially like Shockwave and The River fitting in perfectly ... for me this takes out High Flying Birds #1 as the best solo album thus far. Absolutely loving it!

Liam and Friends present : Liam goes Pop.Shockwave. 4/10 My ratings is lowering as time goes by, because of the rest of the record mainly. This do not belong here. Beady Eye rocker by number, Liam "faux-angry" written by someone else. PASS. One Of Us. 8/10 Strong track. The lyrics are still a bit meh meh especially the "you said we'll live forever" bit with make me cringe everytime, same when Lennon was singing about Macca on How do you sleep. Look at yourself and get over it. The ending is gold, pure 70s Motown, loving it. The strings are what elevate the song. Once. 7/10 As i said before, why use a half arsed demo and stick it on the backing track try to hide the tempo mistakes. They didn't even cut the vocals right when Liam come back after the break. LAZY. what weird choice. Could have been way better. Still a good listen. Now That Ive Found You 9/10. THERE. Very early 00s american pop rock, the OOh Oohs and guitar are lifted off It's all Been Done by the Barenaked Ladies ( hear it here). Good melody, great production and voice. What's not to like. One of the highlight of the record. Halo. 7/10. Stellar production, sounds like Phil Spector was out of jail just to record this, love the heavy guitar and agressive piano. Liam makes it shiiiine. they probably added the whistling after listening to Holy Mountain. this is Liam's Holy Mountain tbh. Why Me, Why Not 9/10. The other highlight of this record. Spot on from start to finish, Bond vibes if Graham Coxon played guitar for Liam, and some good twists from the army. The strings are orgasmic and you can clearly hear Liam has written a bit of this. Be Still. 4/10. Liam, 46, "My mama said". This belongs to the Pantheon of cringe-lyrics like Beatles and Stones and the likes. The tune is forgettable at best. Bored after 5 listen, no a good sign. Next. Alright Now. 8/10. Bar the stupid fade out in the end (who still does that ?), this is a very good tune. Like a weird mix of Lennon and Harrison in the early 70s, Walls and Bridges blended into Living in the Material World. Meadow. 7/10 A strange mix of the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and post-Beatles Lennon / Harrison influences again, but it works. Very mellow and relaxing. Loving it. George Harrison again to the rescue for the amazing guitar work. I like the fact that the chorus is not big and obvious. The River 3/10. Keeps lowering as well, unnecessary track, out of place, boring. A Beady Eye rocker, a bad tune hidden behind an ambitious production that falls flat. Like Dig Out Your Soul done by Heavy Stereo. Gone. 8/10. Very good closer. Another Bond theme, the strings are once again glorious. Liam not overdoing it which is nice, the heavy guitars and strings remind me of Do You Know What I Mean, nice once. Probably the most Oasis-y song on there. Invisible Sun. 4/10 Like a bad copy of The Charlatans or Ian Brown solo worst rockers. No tune, over the top guitar work. Ok as bonus track but next really. Misunderstood. 7/10 Liam Gallagher goes Robbie Williams Escapology era. And that's not a criticism since Robbie had some good tunes back in the day. Should have been on the album really. Glimmer 8/10. The nice surprise of the bonus tracks. The Strokes if they were from California, or and outtake from the Thrills second album. Very nice summer-y tune, and the honky tonk piano in the end is godlike. Should also have been on the album and should been a single. I picture Liam on a surf board, blonde and by the beach in a 60s retro video with an Hawaiian shirt. Overall 7.4567814234434/10 : A very ambitious record clearly, and the the producers tried to outdo As you Were. They did on some tracks but AYW was more cohesive, especially the song quality. We have some very big highs here, but also some very deep lows. There's a good 10 track record on there. I guess they had to include some heavier tracks to please the Parkas, but yeah, it does not work. Liam should have gone full Pop n roll and lose the Shockwaves of this record. We've had better in the past, there is something new here and exciting, let's go wild 100%, run naked in the forest with only an acoustic guitar and bongo. Liam is better off without pale copies of the lesser good Oasis albums.
