I've listened to this so much since it leaked. I must be on me 15th or 16th play through at this point. The first time I played it, I was a big fan but had my reservations on how I felt - was it all just the excitement; a contact high? At this point, the answer to that question is a resounding and defiant no, and if anything, it's grew on me even more.
Am I Liam fanboy? I'd say yes. Does that fact have an impact on how I feel about this album? Perhaps, but, when all is said and and done, I can't deny how I feel; my feelings are not lies. I listen to this album, front to back, and I really, really enjoy it. It entertains me, it makes me smile, it makes me want to sing along and when all is said and done, it makes me want to listen again. That, in my eyes, makes this a very good album.
Is the album a further reach for mainstream success? With songs like One Of Us and Now That I Found You, then I think it absolutely is. To some degree, you could say also with Shockwave & Once, but unlike the other 2, these tracks aren't showing a different side to Liam. He's sang on countless stompers like Shockwave and big ballads like Once. One Of Us and Now That I Found You are very pop, very accessible, very radio friendly, but great tunes in their own right nevertheless.
Elsewhere, I'm not so sure that reach for mainstream success is that overtly evident. He's doing the sort of music he's always been associated with, firstly with Oasis then with Beady Eye (I think the only exception is Alright Now, which I think is something completely new and different for Liam) There was never a problem when he was doing this stuff with those bands, so I don't understand the criticisms now.
I 100% do not feel that the album is soulless. I don't get that at all. How can you listen to Once, Now That I Found You, Halo, Alright Now & Gone (I mention these specifically because I think that's where the most personality is at) and tell me that Liam doesn't sound like he's giving it all and having a great time?
I'm not saying people who aren't feeling the album are wrong. Music is subjective. There isn't a single song or album in the world that is universally and unequivocally loved. I just want to give some counter-points to some of the more negative feedback that I've seen going around.
I'd give this album an absolutely solid 8.5/10. I can put it on and listen to it, start to finish, without feeling the need to skip anything and without doing a bit of a cringe or an eye-roll at some of the lyrics (not even the Halo lyrics; I think they work with the music very well) It wasn't this way with As You Were. Even on the first play of that, with the excitement and contact-highs, I was unsure of at least 4 tracks. For me, this a step-up from As You Were. I think Liam sounds better, I think it's produced better, I think it flows better and is more consistent, there's more variety. I think that on just about every front, it's a better album. Sure, Liam isn't solely responsible for these songs but he had some input and that's enough for me. He didn't have much input, if any, on the majority of Oasis songs, and it was never ever an issue.
So yeah, that's where I'm at with Why Me Why Not. Loving it and pretty excited to see what comes next, however far off it may be.

Liam, why is Invisible Sun a bonus track, FFS?! In the CD there's not bonus track. Them are not treated like bonus track on the back. 😋

Liam and Friends present : Liam goes Pop.Be Still. 4/10. Liam, 46, "My mama said". This belongs to the Pantheon of cringe-lyrics like Beatles and Stones and the likes. The tune is forgettable at best. Bored after 5 listen, no a good sign. Next. Alright Now. 8/10. Bar the stupid fade out in the end (who still does that ?), this is a very good tune. Like a weird mix of Lennon and Harrison in the early 70s, Walls and Bridges blended into Living in the Material World. The River 3/10. Keeps lowering as well, unnecessary track, out of place, boring. A Beady Eye rocker, a bad tune hidden behind an ambitious production that falls flat. Like Dig Out Your Soul done by Heavy Stereo. Invisible Sun. 4/10 Like a bad copy of The Charlatans or Ian Brown solo worst rockers. No tune, over the top guitar work. Ok as bonus track but next really. Enjoyed reading that review. Please don't be offended that I'm not quoting the whole thing, figured I'd just keep in the stuff I had an opinion on, Be Still - I reckon it's pretty strong lyrically. What exactly is wrong with a 46 year old singing "My Mama said..", To me, at least in the narrative of the song, he's just saying his Mam gave him some advice, and it doesn't feel out of place because I think he mentions her a lot and seems to be a bit of a Mammy's boy, at least to me. Alright Now - I LOVE that fade out. I was unsure at first but I think it totally works with what he's singing as it's fading out. Totally beautiful. The River - I like this well enough when I heard it but I think it's placement on the album works quite well. Coming after 2 of the more laid back and down tempo tracks, it explodes into action and sounds pretty huge. Invisible Sun - I think it's pretty forgettable too so I'm glad to see someone else thinks the same as it seems to get a lot of love. It's an interesting idea but its just a bit repetitive to my ears.

I'm not against Babies, love mamas and stuff in songs but the way he sings it, feels corny. The River, well it feels like been there done that 1000 times before, and way better. I have those records, i'll listen to those instead. As for the rest, fair enough

Liam, why is Invisible Sun a bonus track, FFS?! Probably for the same reason Doesn't Have To Be That Way didn't make AYW, whatever reason that is. Both should have been on the albums though.

Finally, finally listened to the whole thing.
You know, for all the love I have for Liam's swagger and hard man attitude, I absolutely adore this album and the places it takes him. After the success of AYW, I was worried he'd stick too close to the formula and come out with a bunch of generic stompers with call-and-response verses and shouty choruses. And this was so much more, in so many different ways. Now That I Found You and Glimmer may be my favorite Liam Gallagher songs since 2002.
The entire album has this lovely late-60s/early solo Beatles vibe. The Rod Stewart comparison I read early sounds spot on, and to me it's a compliment: Liam has done something much more momentous than just dropping a great second album: He's established a style that will carry him into the next decade without trying to be his 20 year old self forever. In short, he's staked his claim to his solo persona.
This is the album Beady Eye clearly wanted to make, but lacked the tools for. And when you listen to Noel's own excursions into Motown and 70s rock, you can see where Oasis might have gone if they'd survived into this decade.

When Noel says he wrote a joyful record with who built the moon then he needs to listen to this because it’s an upbeat great pop rock album and will continue his success

Really surprised a Gallagher fan doesn't enjoy that album ....so positive and varied, great stuff Well, none of the brothers gets "universal approval" for what he does, so I assume that there's always some Gallagher's fan that don't like what they do ^^ I don't deny that the album is varied, what he does now just isn't for me really, to be fair it was already starting to go this way with AYW so I'm not surprised. I'm glad that you find it great but I just really don't, still it's nice to have seen people getting over excited before the leak and all that and to see people enjoying it, even if I don't like it I wish Liam all the best My point wasn't to say that I don't like it for the sake of it, it was to explain that most of us aren't happy or playing the Noel vs Liam stupid game, it's a very shitty feeling to dislike the music of someone you follow for years, I'd rather be enjoying his music, but I'm not going to pretend that I like it ^^

On my first listen. Soooo beatlesy. So good. Shockwave the worst song by Miles for me. After reading reviews on this I was shocked by how good meadow and halo are. Great tunes

Same here, I'm waiting for the release like I did for AYW and I think I've read every review posted here. To make the wait a bit less painful I downloaded the leak and listened just one song. It couldn't be one of the big ones, so I chose Be Still. Not bad but definitely the weakest from what I've heard so far. Would it help to temper your expectations if I told you Be Still is my favourite non-single on the album? Same here!
