The more I hear in context of the album Pretty Boy being the first single makes less sense. It's like releasing Force of Nature or Mucky Fingers as lead singles of HC ot DBTT, wtf.

Surprised you all don’t see this as a 10/10. Fan for almost 30 years, from Toronto. We don’t and won’t get these gems that much more. Enjoy them while we can. If you think this is a 7 or even 8 then sorry you don’t get it.
Highlights: I’m not giving up tonight 2:44 when those two drums kick in before that Burt Bacharach ode ‘i see all that I’ll ever know, I see all that I’ll ever be’ - open the door - anyone over 40 should get that. that fog horn in Try to find a world… The channelling of the cure lovesong on think of a number The whole Manchester/divorce/80s sadness vibe hence the Joy division cover, the smiths/cure, even mind games vibe but ends as bonus track we are gonna get there in the end (probably best song)

Has anyone seen the 7" Pretty Boy Acoustic version available on any legal channels? (iTunes, YouTube, etc)

I enjoyed this album. Very chill. After the first run through I gave it a 7.5/10. Pretty Boy, despite me not liking it when it was released as a single, fits really well in this album.

Well, I think after 3 listens I can write down my review of the record. Who Built The Moon? was a tough record to digest for me, not in a negative way, it's just that I needed dozens of listens to gather round what my opinion was. I ended up thinking that it was a record with great ideas but absolutely zero direction. Didn't understand the tracklist order or what was it the record was trying to go for. It was a bit experimental for the sake of being experimental. It wasn't a bad record, but as Noel has recently said, he was going through a mid life crisis. In my opinion, Council Skies is welcoming your age and looking back to everything you've been through.
I'm Not Giving Up Tonight kinda let me down in a way on the first listen, maybe I was expecting a huge opener like Everybody's On The Run or Riverman. But the more I got to listen to this track, the more I understood why is it the opener. It kinda sums up the feeling of the album. And for me, works perfectly fine.
Then the energy missing on the first track appears on Pretty Boy, tune that gets LOADS of hate around here and to me it's a mistery. It's not the best track on the record but I think it's a logical track to put out as the first single. It's been 6 years since the last record, and it's nice to see that Noel finally learned how to apply modern sounds in his music without losing the focus and keeping his influences in mind. The only flaw I can see on Pretty Boy (which I saw since first listen) it's just the "She was a lot like me..." at the final part of the track. It's so unnecessary and coming from the highest point of energy in the song, it drags it down a little bit. But besides that? A great single and a great way to grab my attention while listening.
Now Dead To The World is fucking absolutely apeshit mint complete and utter blaskiboo. The bollox. Beautiful melodies, beautiful atmosphere. Honest, soul-touching and heart tearing.
Though I promised to myself I wouldn't listen to Open The Door when it was out knowing that the record was out 2 days later, I couldn't help it. I'm an addict. Never been abuser but a user. And I was brutally disappointed. Safe as fuck. But gotta admit it has grown on me since then. Pure britpop and flows fantastic in the album between the previous darker track and the next one. It gives light right when it's needed. Read a comment over here about Futurama and my hatred for the bells disappeared.
Trying To Find A World is a nice little interlude that doesn't differ too much from the demo, and that's the reason it didn't surprise me or resonate too much with me. It's an interlude and it doesn't break the flow of the record, plus ends part 1 of the album so I couldn't really say anything negative honestly.
With Easy Now it's kind of a 50/50. Looove the verses, classic Noel. But then the chorus hits and it bores me to death. Can't say I hate Easy Now but it's just that there are many more interesting tracks and moments from the album than an anthemic chorus. The verses saves it though.
Fucking love Council Skies. My personal favourite single of them 4. Obviously Dead To The World is a better track in so many ways, but this is the Noel I love. That Bacharach sound he's been replicating for the last years is absolutely untouchable at this point. Rattling Rose, A Dream Is All I Need To Get By, Flying On The Ground... That's the direction I was hoping this record would go. At least on 1 or 2 tracks. And my all-time favourite songwriter gave me what I asked. The bossa nova percussion adds so much in this kind of tunes, and I'm so glad Chris is in the band at the moment. Along the roxies, who add more layers of colour to the painting. One of the highlights of the album and top tunes of 2023 for me.
There She Blows! is great. Different. I have to say it bitters me that the beggining melodies with the calmer background instruments lasts so shortly. There is a second verse with the same melody but it's with the groove so it doesn't hit the same way. Surprised Noel said the verses are meh. Every vocal melody on the tune is fantastic. But specially the first verse and the bridge. Harmonies on point as well.
Now I love Love Is A Rich Man. Reminded me of If Love Is The Law but MILES above. I'm sick of the christmassy bells. But from the very first listen, in the second chorus I was already singing "Love is a rich man, or so we are told" plus the nod to I Am The Resurrection is irresistible. What can I say? At this point of the album Noel has me in his pocket.
But Think Of A Number ends the album (No, We're Gonna Get There is not the album closer. Noel has said it already, it didn't fit the vibe of the record, which was reflective. And he didn't like the song either, but as he is going to play it live and b-sides are not longer a thing, he decided to include it as a bonus. His words, not mine) and it ends the best way it cans. Reflective and intimate. Love the lyrics. I couldn't help but think of Lovesong, and I think I wasn't the only one around here. But that isn't a bad thing, it only adds more and more reasons to come back. Unusual structure, and even though I'm writing the bible here, these are only my first impressions. Only listened to the full thing 3 times and still can't figure out part A,B,C and Z but it fascinates me how this song elevates itself in many creative and variated ways, without of course, loosing the focus.
So if I have to conclude my thoughts about the album, the word of course, is SOLID. FOCUSED. BRILLIANT. INTIMATE. HONEST. I said it on another post a couple of weeks ago, but 6 years ago, when Who Built The Moon was out, I was on a terrible job. Working my ass for 14 hours a day, lost with no economic benefit from it. Starting out a relationship with my then girlfriend. Six years later, I work where I want to, happily, focused and it gets me the money to pay my home, where I live with my now fiancé, and back then girlfriend, around of animals (for real, bunnies, hamsters, turtles, dogs ... A fucking zoo). So this was an important release for me. It satisfied me on so many ways I can't help but praise Noel. It's not a perfect album, of course. Some people may not like the singles, I have to admit my first listen was kind of ruined because I knew 6 out of 10 tracks. But against all odds, the album managed to surprise me positively.
For me it's a 9/10 lads. Might be the hype, might be my personal background with Oasis or specially Noel. But as my first thoughts? This is going to be an important album in my life. As Chasing Yesterday was in it's day.
Thank you for reading me X

Is TOAN part 2 for TTFAETB&G?? They both end with that train sound I sense it's meant to be like an interlude to a still non-existing part 2. Apparently it's called part 1 because the track had a longer ending where drums kicked in. But Noel said the first part of the song said more to him, so cut the second half out.

Only just heard it for the first time. Good album, flows nicely. Enjoyed the four songs that I hadn't heard yet. Nice closer with Think of a Number. You can tell its got a bit of a separation vibe to it, in some of the lyrics, on first listen.
But over all, can't stop thinking that on There She Blows! Noel finally ripped off that Cotton Mathers song from Kontiki, album which he went on about for a while in the 90s.
Anyways, always good to hear new Noel tunes. These are a good set. Also enjoyed the bonus stuff, We're Gonna Get There In The End, which always felt nice to the ear when he dropped it that new years eve. Turned out quite nice with the Got To Get You Into My Life horns. Bit of a throw away, but that song always sat well with me. Very familiar I suppose.

This record will be definitely one of the most relevants in my life and all of these last years since that cycle between HFB and CY were a long and beautiful period of evolution and learning. So many things happened since then and I couldn't be more grateful for be living the present with the songwriter of our lives enchanting our journey every single day. Happy new record everyone.

After reading through pages of reviews, I’m in the minority that is very disappointed in the album. It’s my least favourite NG album by a long way. For me the stand outs are DTTW which is an absolute masterpiece and one of the best songs he’s ever written ever, Easy Now is a great single and I still love it, I’m Not Giving Up Tonight is a really good opener, love the strings and Open the Door, See what You Find is decent, also love the strings. But honestly the rest is quiet forgettable for me. As others have said there’s something wrong with the mixing or something because if you compare these songs to another contemporary artists his vocals are so muffled and quiet…
I'm Not Giving Up Tonight (8/10) Pretty Boy (3/10) Dead To The World (10/10) Open The Door, See What You Find (7/10) Trying To Find A World That's Been And Gone Pt. 1 (6/10) Easy Now (8/10) Council Skies (5/10) There She Blows! (6/10) Love Is A Rich Man (2/10) Think Of A Number (5/10)
Music is so subjective, I’m happy that a lot love it but it’s for me it’s an album with some extreme highs (DTTW is seriously amazing, it’s up there with the best songs he’s ever written) and mostly lows.

I’m Not Giving Up Tonight followed by Flying on the Ground then Dead to The World. The biggest missed opportunity of Noel's career. Yeah he fucked up massively by not including Sail On, Flying on the Ground and We’re on Our Way Now. He should have saved all 3 of them for the album

Apple Music track by track (on the description for council skies): “I’m Not Giving Up Tonight” “‘I’m Not Giving Up Tonight’ started as a track on Who Built the Moon? called ‘Daisies’ that never went anywhere. It was a bit more electronic and French but I always liked that chord progression. I hammered away at that song for months and months and months and nothing happened. Then one afternoon, I picked up the guitar at home and out came this song. I can’t tell you where these things come from, they just fall out of the sky. It’s a song of defiance, which is why I thought it would be a good opening track. There is absolutely no chance on God’s green Earth that I’m ever going to play it live because it is a fucking bastard to sing. I needed at least 20 takes to do it.” “Pretty Boy” “It was the first demo that I did and first song that I completed, so [making it the first single] seemed like the right thing to do. I won’t lie, I perversely thought, ‘Well, when people hear that it’s yet another drum machine, I shall bathe in their tears.’ Although I don’t go out of my way to challenge my audience, I do like to engage with them. So it keeps them on their toes a little bit. And you are in a pretty good spot if you’ve been making music for 30 years and you’re still dancing on the edge of ‘Is this acceptable or not?’ I haven’t fallen into a rut of trying to rewrite ‘Little by Little’ endlessly, I’m still pushing it a little bit.” “Dead to the World” “I happened to be in the studio one very, very quiet evening, and I hit those two chords that I’d never played before. They set the mood immediately. It’s very melancholy. It’s a personal song, and I don’t do many of those. Well, at least I don’t admit to doing many of those. But it speaks for itself. I always stay in the same hotel [in Argentina] and the fans are outside 24 hours a day, singing Oasis tunes. They’re always getting the words wrong. One night, I could hear them and that line just came to me. The original lyric said, ‘You can learn all the words, but you’ll still get them wrong.’ But when I did it here, for some reason, I sang ‘change’. Those kids in Argentina, that’s for them.” “Open the Door, See What You Find” “If people can get as far as the chorus, they’ll love it. Even when I was writing it, I was a bit like, ‘Yeah, the strings are great, that’s going to fit. The verses are a bit…whatever.’ But when you get to the chorus, it’s like a burst of sunshine. If it’s about anything, it’s about looking in the mirror and accepting who you are. There’s a saying that once you get into your fifties and you look in the mirror, you see all that you are and all that you’re ever going to be. That’s where the line ‘I see all that I will ever know’ comes from. It’s about saying, ‘I see all that I am and all that I’m ever going to be. And you know what? It’s all right.’” “Trying to Find a World That’s Been and Gone Pt. 1” “Just, again, in lockdown, wondering what the fuck it was going to be like on the other side of this thing, when we were all allowed to mix together. There were weird days, endless days at home in the silence, homeschooling the kids, the conspiracy theories and all this bullshit that was going on. [The song] also has a dual meaning because it could be about a loved one or the break-up of a relationship. It’s ‘Pt. 1’ because it had this second part to it where the drums came in and the big production, but I had a moment of clarity in the studio and went back to the original demo. When it was cut down to this two-minute thing, it said more to me.” “Easy Now” “I had the longest phone call with [Pink Floyd’s] Dave Gilmour. I said, ‘I’ve got this tune and it’s very reminiscent of the mighty Floyd, and I was just thinking, if you could do one of your uplifting guitar solos…’ He was like, ‘Well, look, I love the song, but I don’t think I can do that kind of thing anymore.’ Honestly, I begged him on the phone and, fair play to him, he was not for turning. It was in the middle of the pandemic and everybody was isolated, and it was going to be a ball ache anyway. I said to my co-producer [Paul ‘Strangeboy’ Stacey], who’s a brilliant guitarist, ‘You’re going to have to mimic Dave Gilmour.’ And that’s what he did.” “Council Skies” “I was in Ibiza and maybe that’s where the feeling, the rhythm of it, came from. I had the melody, but I didn’t have any of the words. I always tend to write from the chorus backwards, so if I can get the chorus, the verses will fall into place. Back in England, that book [Sheffield painter Pete McKee’s Council Skies] happened to be on a shelf underneath the coffee table. There it was: Council Skies. That set off a chain of events where it’s like, ‘Right, underneath the council skies…’ The song is about trying to find young love on a council estate, trying to find beauty in the big, bad city. [The intro] is me playing some digital tuned gongs. Tuned gongs—it doesn’t get any more prog than that, right? I’ve got no other life outside of music, so I buy musical instruments, any old shit, that’s what I do. It was just like a digital percussion thing—I didn’t even know there was tuned gongs in it.” “There She Blows!” “I have no idea why I would write a song about some nautical bullshit. So I’m in LA working on another project with [producer] Dave Sardy, and in the hotel, one of the books on the bookshelf is Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. Not that I would ever read it, but I can only surmise that it might have something to do with that. When the Get Back documentary came out, I was so glad that it captured the haphazard, winging-it kind of way that The Beatles were writing. George is going, ‘Oh, I’m stuck on this one.’ They’re saying, ‘Just make it up. Write the first thing that comes into your head when you get up in the morning.’ I’m like, ‘That’s what I fucking do!’ I think I’ve met everyone apart from Bob Dylan, and you realise they’re all just like you, with varying degrees of talent. It’s like they’re all shit kickers trying to make it, and nobody’s better than the other. We’re all blagging it. Nine times out of 10, you’re just throwing enough shit at the wall and seeing what sticks—and then trying to make it rhyme.” “Love Is a Rich Man” “I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I actually wrote that while I was riding a bike. I’ve got a place out in the country, and I was just riding a bike down the country lane. It’s very kind of ’80s-period Bowie. And it’s got a marimba on it, for fuck’s sake. It’s a funny old song. I do like it though. I love the backing vocals and the chorus bit is great, and the guitars on it are brilliant.” “Think of a Number” “It’s quite a personal song and it’s quite bleak, which is why I thought, ‘Can it open the album?’ And really, in hindsight, it should have done. I love the words, and it’s quite epic. There’s three solo breaks—a piano solo, a guitar solo, another instrumental break. There’s a couple of drop-downs. That’s me playing bass, funnily enough. I was doing it in here with [drummer] Chris Sharrock, saying, ‘Look, it’ll be like a bit like XTC or Bowie or that kind of New Wave thing.’ He came up with the drum beat, I had the bassline and it went from there.” “We’re Gonna Get There in the End” “I wrote that in lockdown and put it out on YouTube, just as a gift to fans. And wouldn’t you know it, everybody went apeshit for it. So when I was doing this record, my people were saying, ‘Is that not going to be on the album? Everybody loves that song.’ I was like, ‘Sadly, the one person in the world who doesn’t love it is me. I’m not having a jaunty Britpop song in the middle of this reflective, kind of melancholic record.’ However, I recorded it and it sounded great. I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to play it live, so I’ll just stick it on as a bonus track.’ And as no one does B-sides anymore, you can assume this is one of the great B-sides of my career.” Thanx for that, good read. What's that "So I’m in LA working on another project with [producer] Dave Sardy," must be Oasis related. DBTT/ DOYS Reissues ?

Album ranking
Trying to Find a World That's Been and Gone, Pt. 1 I'm Not Giving Up Tonight Dead To The World We're Gonna Get There In The End Easy Now Don't Stop... There She Blows! Think of A Number Council Skies Pretty Boy Open The Door, See What You Find Love Is A Rich Man
Discography ranking
Who Built The Moon Faster Than The Speed of Magic Council Skies Chasing Yesterday
Generally really pleased with my purchase. The good songs far outway the mediocre. As for Noel not playing guitar solos or letting the ES-355 rip, I'm over it. Noel has a great ear for instruments that gel together.
My main gripe is the overcooked porridge of a mix. The various tracks don't seem to have their own place to sit and everything is fighting one another. Normally when you turn the volume way up the tracks start to split and you can hear every detail. On this it seems to get thicker and Noel's vocal somehow gets even quieter. There are several places in this album where I simply cannot decipher what he's saying. But other than that, everything is great.
7/10

too early for album ranks BUT this could be my fav, I really like every track (Open is ok, not a single material imo)

I'm gonna copy supertronic here and do a colored ranking too:
Dead to the World I'm Not Giving Up Tonight There She Blows! Easy Now Trying To Find A World Open The Door Love Is A Rich Man Think Of A Number Pretty Boy Council Skies
Overall I'd give the album a 6.5/10 or something like that. For context, my ranking of the albums:
Chasing Yesterday Debut EPs Council Skies The Man Who Built The Moon
So it's a bit of a let down after 6 years without a proper album. Still, there are some highlights and even some surprises (the opener is such an unexpectedly happy song) to content my heart. As for the Deluxe tracks: I much prefer Oasis' Don't Stop version. Heck, I'd even prefer the soundcheck version if it didn't sound like trash. We're Gonna Get There is a song I love, and as for Mind Games, well, let's say Arcade Fire did it better.

After a few plays I quite like the album. Biggest draws: Think of a number Dead to the world There she blows We’re gonna get there in the end General flow of the album is lovely
Biggest cons: Council skies (recycled ballad of the mighty i chorus puts me right off which is a shame as I love the strings in the second verse onwards, and the original melody through the rest of the song is so catchy!) Open the door, see what you find - just doesn’t cut the mustard for me especially after dead to the world, it feels out of place. Overall I’d rate it a 7.5/10, some lovely songs that I’ll add to my playlists and play over and over again and a couple that I’ll never return to.
