After a couple more listens, I've gone with Holy Mountain, It's a Beautiful World and The Man Who Built the Moon. They seem the centrepieces of the album to me.
By the way, I can't believe Holy Mountain is 10th on the poll.

By the way, I can't believe Holy Mountain is 10th on the poll. Neither can I. It's one of the best singles Noel has ever done. Noel himself is saying pretty much the same thing. Yes, sometimes he praises his songs too highly at a time when an album of his is being released (Magic Pie) but we know Noel's state of mind back in 1997. Noel praises certain songs he has done, which are usually very highly thought of. Live Forever, Supersonic, Some Might Say, Falling Down, Gas Panic, etc. Usually his opinion in these cases is spot on. Most of the critics think highly of HM too, judging by the positive album reviews flooding in. There is either a pathetic snobbery at play on this forum, or childish Liam lovers slating it, because it was the first single released at the same time as Liam's album came out. The Noel haters were ready to jump wildly on the first thing he would release - and with HM it has stuck.

Love Keep on reaching, The man who built the moon and Dead in the water. I found the album is good to hear through. Nice work.

Had HM not been released as a single, and just been discovered now as one of the songs tucked away on the album, I reckon it would have won over a few more fans.

I'm a Noelist more than anything related with Liam. I fucking adore Noels songs. WTSRTS to me is better than HC and BHN together. Mostly of his solo material is absolutely great. But not the case for Holy Mountain. Childish and annoying song. Its like all the mature sound in CY has been thrown to the trash and then you got HM. Catchy, yes. Standout,no.

I find it annoying and repetitive. it sounds like a pastiche of many other tracks, it's not original or innovative. it's Let's Stick Together + that french guy I never remember his name + she bangs (as much as it angers people, the chorus does sound like she bangs. Once you make the association you can't unhear it) I expect more quality from Noel, good melodies, and that's why I don't like it. if you like it, fair enough, no need to shove it down everyone's throat

I think Keep On Reaching and If Love is the Law do for me what Holy Mountain does for others. I don't give them a 9 or 10, but KOR and ILITL are happy and upbeat Noel as well and I just like them a lot more than HM. Though moody Noel is how I like him best lol.
I've never associated the Gallaghers with happy, quick and upbeat. I find if I need that type, I would just go to someone else. I remember back in 2009 or something when personalized ringtones were the big rage, I wanted to assign my 10 best friends with Oasis songs. I asked one friend to pick between some and she replied with "All these are too sad. I want a happy one." Not sure which one I assigned. When they are moody sad or even arrogant, they are just at their best.

There was definitely an hysterical overreaction in terms of hatred to Holy Mountain on here. But the fact is, the critics loved, a core group here absolutely adore it, so ask yourself, it can't be the worst song ever released or whatever other ridiculous hyperbole was chucked around here at the time?
There are sometimes you just don't have to take things so seriously in life, and Holy Mountain is one of those moments. Yes, it's sense of abandon and it's manic sound is what makes it. For sure, for a songwriter who has released a hell of a lot of dull stodge the last 17 years it may be jarring to some, but when you've become bored to death of mid tempo pastiches like I was then it really was a blast of fresh air. Well over a month on since release and it hasn't lessened in quality. It's ballsy to release something that sounds so insane (don't tell me a tin whistle riff with big brass planted on top is 'just the same old Noel') after so much dad rock for so many years, and injects much needed mayhem into a solo career which was on autopilot.

I still think is one of the worst tracks he's ever recorded. I don't know if that's hyperbolic or what. Every time it starts I squirm. I definitely enjoy more whatever you call dad rock. I want melodies, guitar sound and normal singing. none of these things I find in HM I'd rather him doing moody tracks like The Right Stuff or TMWBTM, instead of "dancing tracks for the girls" as he said.

Why are so many people sayin’ Dead In The Water? It’s not on the fuckin’ album, it’s an extra on the deluxe, basically a b-side. Fuckin’ hate deluxe albums. To be fair it's actually included on the standard version too – it makes no sense, I know, just saying. store.noelgallagher.com/cart/product.php?id=33948Strange. An out take from an acoustic session, song that doesn’t sit right on the album.

The one I’m fixated with at moment is BCWYWF. I can’t get over how good the “whyyyyyy, ooh, ooh, ooh” chorus is - the first chorus without the female backing vocal line sounds so fucking good. Can’t quite make out what else is there aside from Noel singing whyyyy, there are backing harmonies but something else as well. Some Holmes genius.
Love the lyrics, production sounds incredible and the bass playing in the last minute of the song is just.....ah. The main baseline riff reminds me I Might Be Wrong by Radiohead, which I love.
The most psychedelic song on the record. What a song this is.
