I did it because it's fun and because I like both albums, which makes comparing them interesting exactly because they are so different. Of course people are now doing it to show how much more they like one album which is pointless imo. What makes you think that? Oasis' second biggest hit of all time had zero involvement from Liam. Granted, Oasis without Liam would have been nowhere near as brillant, but there's no way Noel wouldn't have made it with those songs. Liam without songs, on the other hand, impossible to say. Gone anywhere is a bit strong but i don't think he would have made it to anywhere near the same size, Liam made Noel's songs better, even songs like Some Might Say which is brilliant on its own but Liam made it great. That's goes for quite a few of them in my opinion. If they weren’t in The Beatles first, very few would care about John, Paul, George and Ringo. All of them were better together. That’s the beauty of it all.

Why would anyone call Roger Daltrey a cunt? I don't know the guy personally (obviously), but he's always seemed as nice as ninepence, to me, what with all that money he's helped raise for kids with cancer, and all that...

Paper Crown is a great song, i rated it the best song on AYW, but Liam did not write it. It could have been on a Robbie Williams album or a One direction album and you would probably have thought it was shit. I dont think anyone is denying Noel wouldn't have gone anywhere without Liam. It's pretty clear. No one is denying Liam's talent, but again you are missing the point. Singer + Songwriter will always be above just Singer. Noel is an artist. There's a big difference. Oasis was an artistic entity, composed of many talents. It's pretty different from picking songs here and there in a catalogue, from someone who is writing a fake apology. Then the singer is throwing that song into people's face saying... That's MY apology. WTF. Sinatra was no more than a good product from his era, they were writing cliché songs that were all sounding the same in the end to please his audience. Just like Elvis. Was it good ? Yes. Was it true, authentic ? No. It was like a beautiful shiny bag of nice toys with a beautiful logo on it. Just like Liam is about to become if he doesn't write all his songs in the future. A nice package of what people want Liam to be. If that's all you want, it's fine. I don't. I want the true Liam Gallagher. The one who has written good tunes like Born on a Different Cloud Soul Love, I'm Outta Time, Greedy Soul, Bold, Songbird... etc And Roger Daltrey is a vagina. He plays in shit tv shows FFS. But 8 songs are his he had imput in 5 and didn't write two. So the bulk of the record is his and much of the rest has had his influence. When does a record become inauthentic for you andy? When it outsells Noel's

If Scotland ever try going independent again then the main advertising cmapaign for the remainers should be Beatles songs played alongside songs like Everybodys gonna dance around tonight

Well the fact that his 4 singles are not written by him is the bit that is annoying. Because those songs are mainly responsible for his success. As i said before, I dont think Liam was really involved in the writing of WOG, FWIW and Come Back To Me. The structure of those songs are simply not Liam's, and the melodies aren't either. Maybe a word here and there. The rest of the songs written by Liam is Liam on top form. Other than that, good record, man. Liam Gallagher's parka Monkeys would have been more authentic than just "Liam Gallagher", because many people were involved in the writing of most important parts the record. When it outsells Noel's What do i care about the charts ? The money's not going in my pocket. Good sales =/= quality, most of the time. + Noel is probably making twice what Liam makes even though he's selling way less record

Whenever you use any of those icons above where you post, the function gets written out properly in the BBCode screen. And so now my c and u are separated by a font size = '2' or something, stopping whatever it is that roots out uses of the C-word and turns them into "vagina" from working.

I can’t see Noel becoming anything beyond a one-hit wonder without Liam. And even that is a huge reach, in my opinion. He couldn’t sing for shit back then. At the very least, nobody outside the UK would have cared. Liam’s voice (and look/vibe) is what caught everyone’s attention, and the strength of Noel’s songs (and his wit) kept it.

Oasis succeeded because the brothers were better together.......................at least the first decade or so. Once the calendar flipped to 2000, everything changed. Mostly for the worse.

I haven't read the full thread, just the first few and last few pages. It's quite funny and predictable though that, rather than discuss and compare both albums, people are throwing around meaningless phrases like WBTM being more "authentic", more of an "album experience" and a bizarre comparison with McDonalds. It's laughable really.
The irony being as well that Noel has ripped off countless artists over the years - Cigarettes and Alcohol being quite literally the same riff as T-Rex being the obvious one, but there's dozens of blatant examples too, and Noel is quite open about it. So the snobbery towards As You Were doesn't wash with me, especially when Noel himself would never in a million years have written an album like WBTM had David Holmes not produced it and told him what to write.
The thread should be a simple comparison of both albums, not this bullshit.
For me, I really like Fort Knox, Beautiful World, She Taught Me How To Fly, The Man Who Built The Moon and Dead in the Water. They're cracking songs, fresh and different and I imagine I'll still be playing them in 3 years time when the next album comes out.
The rest is completely forgettable though - poor songs masked my great production. It's DOYS all over again - one great half, one utterly turgid half. I literally skip 7 out of 12 songs.
As You Were is a decent album. The first 5 songs are good (not great), but When I'm In Need, Chinatown and I Get By are pretty awful. I really like You Better Run, which is far from an all time classic but a good energetic rocker, then the last 3 are decent. Come Back To Me is really good.
If we're comparing with Oasis albums again I'd say it was very much like DBTT - it doesn't hit the highs of WBTM/DOYS but it's perfectly listenable all the way through bar perhaps a couple of ploddy numbers in the middle.
As ever it comes down to musical tastes - I like As You Were more as it's easier and more enjoyable to listen to. Some people prefer WBTM and that's their choice, but I can't stand the patronising pseudo-bullshit that some people come out with to justify it.

I agree with quite a bit of that Nyron, simply I listen to more of the tracks on As You Were than Who Built The Moon. I tried giving the latter a listen during my lunch break and I just couldn't sit through several of the songs, as soon as the chorus of Holy Mountain comes on I have to skip, Keep On Reaching is good, then I have no inclination to listen to the next two, then it picks up a bit before too much of the second half is dead air with the Wednesday parts, then a nice acoustic number stuck on the end almost as an apology. I'm such a huge Noel fan and expected more.

The rest is blah to me.

Liam Gallagher's parka Monkeys would have been more authentic than just "Liam Gallagher", because many people were involved in the writing of most important parts the record. You could say that about any modern solo artist, though. Not many 'solo' artists create their own songs anymore, let alone entire albums. Yet they're still regarded as solo artists because it's not the songwriters we like to watch or listen to, it's the performer. Liam's very open when it comes to this kind of thing, he's said himself (numerous times) that he's more of a singer than a songwriter. But he's still giving his input and contributing to the songwriting process, having either written or co-written the majority of the songs in AYW. That's more than can be said for most solo artists today. Noel's a great songwriter, and he's been writing songs for years. He has a way with words, and his melodies are always catchy. Liam's still inexperienced in comparison to Noel when it comes to songwriting, but I think he's coming into his own, and I can't wait to see where both of them go to from here.

I voted ASW.. because I didn't like - apart a few songs - WBTM and Liam's album is really GOOOOOD. Things are changed! Now I really adore WBTM as well.. the album has grown a lot on me and I LOVED the two album (they're so different but wonderful) in the same way. Happy guy. ^^

only issue I really had with as you were was that it relied way too much on acoustic backing methods. I remember playing the album in full and generally feeling abit bored about half way through because the instrumentals just wernt that varied.
you better run shouldve been heavier greedy soul shouldve been heavier
imo the album needed more to break up the acoustic instrumentals imo. Even songs like bold and ive all I need start off with acoustic backing.
who built the moon is just an album that feels half baked imo, the songs arnt that good and feel like startings of ideas rather fully fledged songs. Its all over the place.
