damn this one will have to simmer for a bit. just finished my first listen.
its a lot of what i've always wanted from noel. the most important thing he has regained his sense of fun. He's been writing solid to great songs since 2005, but there's not a batch that sounds this playful.

I love this album. Listened through it a couple times now and I feel like the latter half of the album is the best. Black & White Sunshine, If Love is the Law (my fav), The Man Who Built the Moon, Dead in the Water... All mega songs. My main complaint is the way it's mixed it feels like it was intentionally created to be hard to hear Noel. I really can't make out what he's saying sometimes. Does anyone have the lyrics to the album?
It's definitely different for Noel but I respect it. I think it's a top album and I really respect him trying out a different kind of sound. Looking forward to the tour!

let me preface this by saying Oasis have been my favourite band since 1994. I've been following every record, every tour, every single ever since. VERDICT for WBTM: easily the WORST Gallagher record ever released. Oasis are probably the 'least' experimental music i listen to and some people are surprised to learn they are my favourite band ever considering how my own music sounded when i made it and considering how much other music i'm into. Noel Gallagher has completely lost himself. His voice is shot.....his lyrics are frankly poorer than poor. David Holmes has completely ruined any genuine attempt at creativity he may have had with this album. It's oddly produced, it has David Holmes written ALL over it (if you've ever listened to David Holmes records you'll easily see that's the case). All this hype about "Dead In The Water".....yeah it sounds like an outtake. It's literally a fraction of a fraction of being as special as most of the Noel acoustic songs we've ever heard. It just so happens because Noel can't pen a tune to save himself these days a random recording like "Dead In The Water" gets heralded as some amazing lost tune. The reality is, for Noel standards, it's mediocre at best. The ONLY song i actually like on the album is "The Man Who Built The Moon"----but even that suffers from some parts where Noel's voice just sounds like some amateur trying to sing karaoke. What happened to Noel's voice? Everyone spent years trouncing Liam for his voice deteriorating but Noel has lost ALL meaning in his voice. He sounds bored and forced. He sounds like someone is pushing him to sing it instead of him wanting to. This whole record is full of forced yelping and strained singing. It really is painful to listen to. I don't like this record. Not because it's "experimental"----because it's not even remotely experimental. I don't like it because it feels fake. It doesn't have any authenticity. It's a forced exercise in "doing something different" and in my opinion, that means Noel showing up in Scotland and recording some musical sketches and then watching David Holmes cut them up and reconstruct them to make a bunch of songs. That's not experimental. That's just a different method of recording. He made this album to please his wife. It's well known his wife hates Oasis and this is a reaction to show her he can hate Oasis too. An utterly forgettable album; it's not going to sell and it's not going to help his legend grow at all. This is a stinker that's going to clog his legacy for a couple of years until he can make a good record again. Is this a review for As You Were?

- opening two songs have really grown on me now and I think the album has a fantastic start - Keep on Reaching is a poor track and the Come Together rip-off on Be careful What you Wish For is actually pretty grating and ruins the track for me (on first lesson) the female backing vocals are good though - everything else is great
Good album from Noel and a step in the right direction he needs to do more stuff like this in the future. Let his 50s be a decade of experimentation and more expansive songwriting

I'm really loving it after one listen and can only imagine it getting better. Don't get all the hate. I would have liked one more song with a vocal, maybe a studio version of DITW

Fort Knox- 6.5 Great opener-but probably will skip it most times
HM- 7/10Really like it but would have liked a better mix and some dirty guitar at the end.
Keep on Reaching 7/10 Kind of reminds me of something off AM-nice Motown vibe, maybe a bit long.
Beautiful Wolrd 8/10 Love it especially in the context of the album, great instrumentation, love the bass under the French part and the section after.
She Taught Me How to Fly 8/10- Didn't care for the live version at all but love this. It has a great groove to it and the repetition somehow adds to it.
Wish for 3/10 Filler for sure, I quite like the groove but the melody is dull.
Black and White Sunshine- not sure how I rate this one. It sounds a bit too 90's American.
Interlude - helps create the 'feel' of the album, nice enough.
Love is the Law-7/10 great melody and I like the almost Christmas feel. Think it will grow on me even more.
Man Who Built the Moon- Fucking brilliant-9/10
Interlude-same as the other one.
Overall I think it's a great album, almost definitely his best solo. Just wish Dead in the Water was on it for real. I buy vinyl and feel it makes a really nice album closer because of the stark contrast to the rest of the album. It sort of reminds me of Zuma by Neil Young which finishes with a CSNY acoustic song with a different feel to the rest of the album.
Keep up the great work Noel

Just had my first quick skim through listen - and yes, its just as I had hoped. Each song is surprisingly varied and different to the next, making a nice album whole and a good flow. I'll do a proper review of each track later when I've heard it a few more times.
The majority of it is very upbeat as I expected. Holy Mountain gave me a good steer as to where Noel's head was at this time round making the record, and when I said it reminded me of a track from the BHN era, this album reinforces that opinion 100%.
This is Noel's most happy, uplifting, joyous, upbeat, feelgood album since BHN. And yes, I'll go as far to say this is the best thing he has done since BHN too.
Both Gallagher releases actually piss all over much of Oasis Mk2, Beady Eye and Noel's last 2 albums - but particularly WBTM does.
Had Oasis Mk2 gone in this new direction, with a bit of AYW thrown in too, the Oasis legacy may have lifted off to have been just as big and popular as the Oasis Mk1 90's era.

I'll always give Noel Gallagher a chance - the guy wrote the vast majority of the soundtrack to my life. I have said before his first two solo albums do nothing for me. That's the way it goes sometimes. From that starting point I wasn't expecting much from this record, and it's just as well. I like Black & White Sunshine. The Man Who Built the Moon is OK. The rest is mediocre - miles away from what Noel is capable of. I think he is having some sort of midlife thing, and to be honest it comes across in his interviews that he's not that enthusiastic about this album. I hope he gets whatever it is out of his system and gets back to doing what he does best. He's best at being the principle songwriter and guitarist of Oasis. Fact. He may not think it right now, but he needs Oasis. This new album has shown once and for all Noel will never need Oasis ever again.

If Love Is The Law IS 100% the most 'different' song Noel has EVER done. Doesn't mean it's good though...in fact I actually feel embarrassed for him, listening to that song. The record on the whole...it sounds like something Noel needed to get out of his system. I was all for him doing a more interesting album and it's fair enough he's gone and done it. But I REALLY wanted it to end up a LOT better than this. Half of it is, well, half-baked IMO. It's not wonder Holy Mountain was the single cause it's the only thing on there with real immediacy...despite the fact it's cheesy as hell and the worst single ever for any Gallagher project. Hmmm I need more time with some of these songs I think. i actually think its the most standard noel song on the album...excluding the bonus tracks obviously.

My initial thought is that I don't think he could have made this kind of album in Oasis. Not just in terms of sound, but the process too. I find it hard to imagine Oasis sitting around, trying out random bits and takes, and slowly bringing together songs that they'd have no idea if they were good or not.
Plus, it's incredibly difficult to get all 5 guys to buy into it over the course of 4 years, without stepping on someone's toes, or someone becoming bored with it.

Oasis could have been much more adventurous but I agree they could never have created a record in this way its the time the freedom of being solo allows you.

Holy Mountain, Black and White Sunshine and If Love Is The Law are the stand out tracks for me on first listen. Fort Knox is a great opener too. I'm delighted he's trying something a bit different but this album on the whole hasn't grabbed me as much as his previous work on first listen, it;s a bit more of a complex listen I think. I'm not getting the love for The Man Who Built The Moon either. A grower maybe.
It's funny because of all the hate Holy Mountain has been getting, but it's clear to everyone now it's one of the strongest tracks on the record.
I love the song, but does anyone else hear this when they listen to If Love Is The Law?
Awful I know, tell me I'm being daft.

I had this album on repeat in work yesterday heres my thoughts.
FK. Works well as an opener. Probably the one I would skip the most. The 'drop' at 45 secs doesn't sound quiet right and annoys me everytime
HM. I think its catchy. Love the layers of instruments, I don't think its Noels best but I don't understand the negativity
KOR. Sounds like it would fit on the Ghostbusters 2 LP I had as a kid. Awesome except for the 'Can you keep a secret' lines. Thats nearly as cheesy as 'Kid on crack'
IABW. Awesome. Right up there with my favourites by Noel
STMHTF. The drums on this song deserve a mention they are fantastic. The song is repeative but works. The 'Put your money where you mouth is line' is great
BCFWYWF. Great but the intro is too close to 'Come together' for me. It annoys me when Noel lines himself up as being labelled as a Beatles tribute like this. Apart from that the song is a nice album track
BAWS. Cool as hell. Only negative point is I wish I could hear more of Noels vocals
IP1. Nice but don't see why we need to get 2 of these.
ILITL. I can't get this one out of my head. Cheesy poppy seasonal awesomeness. As with BAWS I wish I could hear more of Noels vocals
TMWBTM. Awesome. Wasn't expecting this song. As good as BOTMI. Wish it was a few minutes longer with an epic ending to finish the album. The first verse reminds me of something. Think its from the TV rather than another song. I can't think what the hell it is though.
DITW. I love Noels acoustic stuff but his vocals annoy me on this one....it feels unfinished. It may grow on me.
Overall I like the album as a journey but feel like we should have 2 more songs on it... freaky teeth style would fit nicely. It just feels too short TMWBTM, ILITL and IABW are the best tracks by far.
Noels vocal are hidden in the mix of quiet a few songs and I've found myself humming tunes rather than singing choruses to myself like I normally with Noels songs.
The first verse of TMWBTM is really annoying me it reminds me of something but not sure what.

I said it when As You Were came out and I'll say it again - I feel very lucky to be able to enjoy this album. As an Oasis / NG / LG fan, all I need is to be able to enjoy it myself, and I love the album, has great tunes and a great flow. I feel very sorry for those who don't like it, and those who didn't like As You Were. Not because they are wrong to dislike it, its their own opinion! But I feel sorry for them because its almost like no new music has come out for them, since they can't enjoy it. To those who don't like it, I say to you - Unlucky mate, I do not envy you in the slightest. For me however, I've had a great year! I got two excellent new Gallagher albums this year, perhaps the best ones I've heard since the split! Happy days for me

Have to say I like this album more then I expected I would after hearing the first tracks that were being released!
Fort Knox: Great instrumental opener.
Holy Mountain: Still not liking it very much. One of the weakest on the record for me.
Keep on Reaching: Not many people seem to like it but I love this one. It's a soul track, love the brass & the female vocals on it. Noel's voice sounds great as well.
It's a Beautiful World: One of the best tracks on the album. Love the dreamy chorus with the under water effects. Bit of a brother to BOTMI.
She Taught Me How To Fly: Bit too repetitive for me. Do like the production on it though.
Be Careful What You Wish For: Not my favourite track but I can enjoy it. It grooves & I like the backing vocals.
Black And White Sunshine: Catchy tune this one. I understand the REM comparison, and that's not a bad thing to me.
Interlude: Sounds alright, not really necessary for me to be on the record.
If Love Is The Law: Loving this one. Catchy pop tune.
The Man Who Built The Moon: Standout track. Love the 'big' sound on this one. Has a great chorus.
Dead In The Water: What a beautiful acoustic track this one! The piano adds something nice to it. Noel's voice sounds pretty emotional on it.
All in all a very good record. 7 out of 11 tracks that I like a lot. Don't understand why they pushed Holy Mountain & STMHTF though.
