I'll always give Noel Gallagher a chance - the guy wrote the vast majority of the soundtrack to my life. I have said before his first two solo albums do nothing for me. That's the way it goes sometimes. From that starting point I wasn't expecting much from this record, and it's just as well. I like Black & White Sunshine. The Man Who Built the Moon is OK. The rest is mediocre - miles away from what Noel is capable of. I think he is having some sort of midlife thing, and to be honest it comes across in his interviews that he's not that enthusiastic about this album. I hope he gets whatever it is out of his system and gets back to doing what he does best. He's best at being the principle songwriter and guitarist of Oasis. Fact. He may not think it right now, but he needs Oasis.

On first listening: Fort Knox - great opener, still don't think I'll listen to it that often just because I'm not a massive fan of instrumentals but it does its job very well. Holy Mountain - still think it's rubbish, it is catchy but just don't like it at all. Keep On Reaching - really cool instrumentation and a nice beat but not a massive fan of the vocal. It's alright though. It's A Beautiful World - really like this one, what a load of pretentious wank the French bit is though She Taught Me How To Fly - again quite like the instrumentation, don't like the spacey vocal bits though. Definitely prefer the album version to the Jools version though because I was bored to tears listening to that originally. Be Careful What You Wish For - not sure what to think of this one, it's got an alright groove but think it may suffer from "Hey Now! Syndrome", ie it goes one verse too long. Not sure about the outro either. Will need to listen to this one again to get a better idea. Black & White Sunshine - definitely my favourite one so far, big fan and my favourite vocal on the album too. Interlude - fucking boring, won't be listening to that again in a hurry. If Love Is The Law - quite good too, like the chorus, wish it was a bit clearer though. The harmonica in the middle is great. The Man Who Built The Moon - whoever said this sounds a bit like DYKWIM I can definitely hear that as well. Great menacing song, think this may well be my favourite. Would make a great Bond theme. End Credits - bit more chilled to end the album but again it's just a bit boring. Overall I'll give the album a 6/10. There's just too many songs I'm not arsed about that I wouldn't care if I never heard them again. Fort Knox, It's a Beautiful World, Black & White Sunshine and The Man Who Built The Moon my highlights.

Really love the end of this album. the two interludes surrounding the best songs imo make for an interesting and amazing finish. The album goes up and down and back and forth from good to meh for this first half (3 good, 3 meh), but once we hit B&WS, its smooth and amazing sailing the rest of the way.

Great album, specially the second half of it. Black and White Sunshine is fantastic. Hope we get a studio version of Dead in the Water!
My only problem: when the first Interlude starts, I always think that Dido will start singing "My tea's gone cold, I wondering why...". My girlfriend has the same problem. Help!!!!

Listening to it again now. The one-two of Beautiful World into She Taught Me How To Fly is mega.
Two anthems in their own way.
This one just flows, man.
AYW is an album that I go back to track-by-track, not sure if I can listen to it all the way through so often.
This is the opposite. The whole thing works as one cohesive thing. If ever there had been a time for them to use fade ins, it was now, ffs, not on the Be Here Now b-sides!

I couldn't figure it out on first listen - well it took me 5 mins or so - but the interlude and end credits are pretty much a carbon copy of 'The Beach and the Sea' by Reverend and the Makers, which in itself is taken from something else.

Heard it twice so far...
Really liked it. Happy album, good vibe. It certainly is a change from Noel but wouldn't go as far a calling it ground breaking. Has some out there moments but not an am out there album. It's clearly Noel with some great melodies and Holmes decorates the album in a very nice manor, with lots of shit going on.
I think the album ends so well, starting from the interlude, the two songs after it are very good and lots of classic Noel on there.
The songs are good and the production is even better I think (listening on head phones the 320 download... will wait til it's on vinyl through my speakers to make a dull judgment). But more importantly I think it really is a happy album. And it makes it more enjoyable.
Anyways. Glad Noel has made an effort to change things up a bit. Live the loops, synths and strange sounds going on all over the back of the tracks. The instrumentals are very nice as well.

Nope. Oasis are done and will never make another album again. Bullshit, I just hope it doesn't take Peggy dying to make it happen. I hope to God Oasis don't get back together. Mainly for my bank balance... but c'mon, musically, it's done. I don't want to see a 65 year old Noel and 60 year old Liam at Knebworth. It's been and gone. Leave it be. As Noel said, what's to gain from going back, apart from a fuck load of cash obviously. They'd never hit the heights they did in the past, it wouldn't live up to the hype. You know we can't go back.

Has some very different moments and, without sounding like a dick, I'm going to be getting absolutely mashed on Friday and will look forward to getting home, sticking the headphones in and listening to it all the way through while mildly concerned that I may have a heart attack...

1. Fort Knox - great opener. Not really what comes later on the album, so it somehow awakens false expectations, but once you get the whole flow of the album, it fits perfectly
2. Holy mountain - it grew since first listen, but still it is the biggest miss of the album, and very strange choice for a first single. For me, this is the first time, I realised Noel is 50 years old and getting older (while trying to sound young)... sounds like some dance track for elderly people...
3. Keep on reaching - What I like about this song - imagine it is sung by Michael Jackson... this is strange song for what we are used from NG, but it is the reason I admire the man, and why I have trust for him...This is so out of his comfort zone, sooooo far from Married with children:) for example...Not safe bet at all. Aned that is cool.
4. Beatiful world - I feel there was a progress for Noel since Falling down. After that came What a life, then Ballad of Mighty I, and now we have Beatiful world. And somehow this is the weakest one of those, yet it goes to greatest distance toward electronic feeling. But the verses are sort of generic and the chorus is boring...french intermission is nice and the bass guitar makes the song worth listening.
5. She thought me how to fly - for me, the most beautiful chorus on the album, it just does the magic somehow. it sounds sad and upbeat in the same time. Very much 80´s. Here I have the feeling of great pop-rock tune, without Noel really trying hard. It just happens to fit my mood everytime I play it.
6. Be careful what you wish for. A descendant of Get on your high horse lady, Right stuff, bit of Beatles (just the beggining) and somehow To be there where´s life by Gem (in the way it just goes nowhere). I imagine a great chorus comes at least once during this track. But it does not, so it is just great atmospheric track, sort of filler. I like it, but more as a brick in the wall of this album than a stand-alone track.
7. Black White Sunshine - Noel goes 90´s here. Production is sort of perfet here, and I hear resemblences to REM ... I imagine this to be sung by Liam and it is number 1 in 90´s in seconds.
8. Interlude - don´t really know what to think about it yet. It is not as catchy and brief as Quick peep was, yet it creates a certain atmosphere...don´t know
9. If love wast the law - totally Neverending story! But hey, those are the best verses melodies Noel ever produced!!! Or one of those that are the best. It is so catchy and emotinal! But then comes the chorus, and it is...hm, okaish, but not the greatist. Yet somehow I have a feeling this song will grow. What puts those choruses down is actually the production/arrangement. It makes those verses sound very clean, and choruses are just grounded, more dad rock - in the way how they sound, it is not the problem of the melody. Does it make sense?
10. The man who built the moon - I would like this song to build the atmosphere little bit more... it just starts, where it ends. But in the same time, it is great example of Noel´s ability to blend chorus with verses in the most ingenious way noone else knows - which doens´t really happen on this specific album all the time, so that is good. It is dark, Doves-like, Gas-panic-like and little bit Born on the different cloud-like...and Bond-like and western-like...Interesting production, great melody.
11. Interlude 2 - still don´t know, sounds like first interlude to me.
12. I don´t think it is the best song of the album. But it would be sooo easy for Noel to make it another "If I had a gun" type of song, or any other of his magnificent demos, that he made into proffesionaly produced songs, that have worldvide impact, but maybe lost little bit of their fragility and beauty with full arrangement... and the fact he didnt put it inside this collection, and just added it as a bonus, means a lot, cause you can see, he really went out of his comfort zone...and that is a huge wow moment for me, and make this album worth listening. Cause we are really getting something slightly different this time.
13. God help us all - almost same as the old version, for me, the weakest track
In general, I am really happy for this album. I think Noel still tries to aim at to many targets, so he has few misses here and there, but in general he tries to progress, ant that is nice. so maybe 7,5/10

Your point about Beautiful World is spot on for me as well - although I do really love the song - as in it's in the same family as WAL, Falling Down etc And I agree on Black And White Sunshine. First thing I thought when I heard it live on the radio france thing yesterday was that it needed Liam to do the vocals. You used a great term as well - 'a brick in the wall' I actually think that about every song. Okay, Holy Mountain (for me), and STMHTF work really well on their own, but the rest just seem to fit seamlessly into one big flow.

After a few listens, here are my impressions:
The 1st half of the album is very weak for me - possibly the weakest sequence of songs on an Oasis-related LP since the 2nd half of HC. Fk and KON are passable and STMHTF could have been better, but as it is it's just too long and tiresome - a wasted opportunity. IABW suffers from the same fate, but I don't think there was too much to extract from there. And finally there's HM, which will forever seat alongside songs like FON and Jesus Freaks as one of the worst songs Noel ever sang - if not the worst.
Then, of a sudden, as the album reaches its halfway mark, things change decisively. BCWYWF is a stark change of pace from a pastiche attempt to sound cool to more serious, well thought craftsmanship. BCWYWF is exactly what GOYHHL should've been 9 years ago and, albeit a bit too long, starts what's a pretty strong 2nd half. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Noel wrote the 2nd half of WBTM at a later moment, after David Holmes finally took him out of this 50-year-dad-trying-too-hard-to-look-cool mode.
B&WS is my favorite song so far. Despite its name, it's colorful and beautiful and showcases the many shades of sounds Noel can create when inspired. ILITL also gets high marks from me. As for TMWBTM, while I admit it's not my cup of tea, I congratule Noel for trully leaving his confort zone here and Holmes for the top notch production.
Finally, I think the Wednesday segments deserve recognition. I actually liked them a lot, even though they're hardly innovative - they strongly remind me of Coldplay's Ghost Stories. All in, they flow well within the album and are probably better than any filler song Noel could've written.
All in, I'd give the 1st half a failing grade (2/5) and the 2nd half strong marks (4/5), with a normalized score of about 6/10.
Finally, I'm not taking DITW and GHUA into account as they're not trully from WBTM. It's cool to have a finished version of GHUA after all those years, but it's hardly a groundbreaking work. As for DITW, it's IMPERATIVE that Noel finishes it for LP#4. While it's beginning just sounds like a new TDOTL, it suddenly explodes into what seems to be one of the most amazing pieces of music Noel has ever written. I trully can't wait for a trully finished and produced version of this belter.

After listening to the album, I can't help to think something I've thought about Noel and Oasis for years: that they must have really poor advisors and end up doing exactly the opposite of what they should've done to be more successful or have a better creative output. This evaluation is clearly subjective but I'm going to explain what I mean. "Dead in the water" is the strongest song but instead of being properly produced, we just got a live take, not even a demo. It has an emotional chorus and great lyrics. Great structure that feels cohesive and complete. Under this lens, the second best song in the album is "Black & White Sunshine". Again, feels like a complete song, with meaningful transitions and a structure that makes sense as a whole. "Be Careful What You Wish For" is super groovy and is begging for a transition. Instead Noel decided to add female vocals that just say "ah" without a clear melody attached to it. I'm not suggesting it should have a "DLBIA" equivalent chorus. But monotony isn't the alternative. "It's A Beautiful World", "She Taught Me How To Fly", "Keep on Reaching" and "The Man Who Built The Moon" (which btw has a "Soldier On" vibe) are good songs. It seems people are most excited about the latter and I can agree with that. However, all of these have the same sort of "A-A-B" structure and are missing a "C". They are just a big tease for something that never arrives. I wonder if this is on purpose. "Fort Knox" is good but could be shorter. Or at least give me something more radical, like a cool solo -- synth, guitar or otherwise. "Holy Mountain" is "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" meets "She Bangs". Yeah. No bueno. "If Love is The Law" is decent. Maybe one of the most cohesive in the album. The 2 "Wednesday instrumentals" are fine, but I feel the same as with "Swamp Song" -- tricked that they get to call these as 2 individual tracks when they really aren't actual songs and they just make the track count higher. I liked the album. Cause I love Noel. His voice and his style. But I'm left wanting more because the whole experience feels like unfinished work that could've used a bit more thinking. Let's be honest. It's a 3/5. Sadly, i agree. this is worst than nghfb and cy. and im not saying that is shit, but for Noel is bad. for me is 2/5. this songs are begging for solos or some kind of surprise

1. Fort Knox - Really like this one -- it's a great track full of energy and groove. 8/10
2. Holy Mountain - This one I just can't get into. Seems corny and the lyrics are crap. 4/10
3. Keep On Reaching - Probably the most poppy song on the album. A solid track that sounds like it'll be played on the radio. 7/10
4. It's a Beautiful World - A good track. Seems to sum up the mood of this album. 8/10
5. She Taught Me How To Fly - Just ok. Lyrics go nowhere, groove is boring to me. 5/10
6. Be Careful What You Wish For - A little be Come Together-ish. Not a bad track! 7.5/10
7. Black & White Sunshine - BRITPOP! Sounds like something Noel would've written in the 1980s. 8.5/10
8. Interlude (Wednesday Part 1) - A good little transition track. 8/10
9. If Love Is the Law - Meh. The lyrics are just awful. 'If love is the law, then this is a crime'...really Noel? 4/10
10. The Man Who Built the Moon - Pretty forgettable. 5.5/10
11. End Credits (Wednesday Part 2) See part 1. 8/10
12. Dead in the Water - I wish Noel would put out a full album of acoustic songs like this! 8.5/10
13. God Help Us All - Underwhelming and not really that good. Never understood the hype of this song. 5/10
Overall Grade: 6.5/10
I'm just not digging this album. There are some decent tracks but to me it's Noel's worst solo album so far.

From best to worst.
Beautiful World
If Love Is The Law: Production is kinda messy, but it fits the song, has a good feeling.
Be Careful What You Wish For: Great lyrics, riffs and vocals. But at the end there's just too much going on and it just drowns, ends up being too long. That "hiccup" sound effect is horrible.
She Taught Me How To Fly: Too repetitive, but also has a good feeling, liked the studio version a lot more.
Interlude & End Credits: There's no point in making it two songs, really like the feel of the songs. Has some production problems: Interlude and End Credits have a very abrupt ending.
Keep On Reaching: Intro is great, but the rest...
B & W Sunshine: Kinda forgettable, I like how the guitar sounds on it though.
The Man Who Built The Moon: I just hate the production on this one.
Fort Knox
Holy Mountain

I think Noel still tries to aim at to many targets, so he has few misses here and there, but in general he tries to progress, ant that is nice. so maybe 7,5/10 I literally thought the same thing as the song started. Did Noel toss in a Neverending Story cover? Wild.

1. Fort Knox - great opener. Not really what comes later on the album, so it somehow awakens false expectations, but once you get the whole flow of the album, it fits perfectly 2. It is not as catchy and brief as Quick peep was, yet it creates a certain atmosphere...don´t know 9. Did Noel toss in a Neverending Story cover? Wild. Now I have that song stuck in my head...

let me preface this by saying Oasis have been my favourite band since 1994. I've been following every record, every tour, every single ever since.
VERDICT for WBTM: easily the WORST Gallagher record ever released.
Oasis are probably the 'least' experimental music i listen to and some people are surprised to learn they are my favourite band ever considering how my own music sounded when i made it and considering how much other music i'm into.
Noel Gallagher has completely lost himself. His voice is shot.....his lyrics are frankly poorer than poor. David Holmes has completely ruined any genuine attempt at creativity he may have had with this album. It's oddly produced, it has David Holmes written ALL over it (if you've ever listened to David Holmes records you'll easily see that's the case).
All this hype about "Dead In The Water".....yeah it sounds like an outtake. It's literally a fraction of a fraction of being as special as most of the Noel acoustic songs we've ever heard. It just so happens because Noel can't pen a tune to save himself these days a random recording like "Dead In The Water" gets heralded as some amazing lost tune. The reality is, for Noel standards, it's mediocre at best.
The ONLY song i actually like on the album is "The Man Who Built The Moon"----but even that suffers from some parts where Noel's voice just sounds like some amateur trying to sing karaoke. What happened to Noel's voice? Everyone spent years trouncing Liam for his voice deteriorating but Noel has lost ALL meaning in his voice. He sounds bored and forced. He sounds like someone is pushing him to sing it instead of him wanting to. This whole record is full of forced yelping and strained singing. It really is painful to listen to.
I don't like this record. Not because it's "experimental"----because it's not even remotely experimental. I don't like it because it feels fake. It doesn't have any authenticity. It's a forced exercise in "doing something different" and in my opinion, that means Noel showing up in Scotland and recording some musical sketches and then watching David Holmes cut them up and reconstruct them to make a bunch of songs. That's not experimental. That's just a different method of recording.
He made this album to please his wife. It's well known his wife hates Oasis and this is a reaction to show her he can hate Oasis too.
An utterly forgettable album; it's not going to sell and it's not going to help his legend grow at all. This is a stinker that's going to clog his legacy for a couple of years until he can make a good record again.

Has anyone pointed out Keep On Reaching has the same beat as I Believe In All??
Just can't get into this one.
For those of you who like B&W Sunshine....I'm trying...but I can't find a chorus to hold onto.
(BTW, I hated She Taught Me How to Fly on Jools and now, I love the album version)

The only question I have for David Holmes is... Where the fuck is the dynamic range in this album?
