No hating on him. But you can't say that he's reviewing AYW if he hasn't heard the record. He may have listened to Wall Of Glass,Chinatown and For What Is Worth. Its alright if he doesn't like Chinatown, loads of people hate it. But come on,WOG has decent lyrics and it sounds brilliant. My friends don't like Oasis but love that tune.

Wall of Glass is one of my least favourite tracks on the album. Does nothing for me.

The Gallaghers have been slagging off almost everyone in the music industry for the last 25 years but their fans can't stand even the most minor criticism. It's absolutely pathetic, especially when directed to a figure of such stature as Paul Weller. Most people wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit them on the ass, as a clever guy once said.

Whether he's heard the record in full or not... What gets me is that I don't really think he's in a position to be too judgemental on the quality of anyone's lyrical content anymore given the quality of his own lately. A shame when you compare it with some of the brilliance of both The Jam and The Style Council and parts of his solo career. Looking at any of the lyrics from his solo albums for the past 10 years you'll see an undeniable dip... "There's a vacuum, In the back room, Of a ballroom after dark" anyone?
His last 4 albums have plenty of examples "pony" lyrics to choose from, short and simple rhymes that carry little substance or memorability. Yeah, I appreciate he's not the angry young man of his youth anymore etc. but I feel he's disappeared up his own arse in this quest to be 'The Changing Man'... What's changed is he no longer writes tunes anymore. Whilst he might continue to push his own creative envelope musically for better or worse, lyrically there's no meaning or depth and most are just tossed off self-indulgent nonsense. Whilst the lyrics on As You Were may not be a masterclass is lyric writing, they still carry more depth(and are also hung on some much better melodies and tunes!) Not that is a measure of quality, but I imagine Bold for instance is going to get a better sing a long in December than Woo Se Mama for instance.
The point I'm making is I feel it's a bit of a case of pot-kettle... Sort your own words out Weller.

Cringing here at the sudden hate for Weller.
If he couldn't be bothered to actually listen to the album then he should have kept his mouth shut imo but there's been some pretty odd rewriting of Weller's career by some posters. He's consistently tried different things since his 90s solo peak. Some have come off, some haven't, but that's the nature of the beast.

Hahaha this is unbelievable, really some Liam fans look like Trump supporters.
Weller never reviewed As You Were or gave his opinion on the album as a whole, he clearly says he just heard a couple of songs, which were alright, compliments Liam on doing his thing, says he's happy for him, and just that he didn't like the lyrics on what he heard (which probably included Chinatown and come on, lyrics are dreadful on that one).
In the past weeks, journalists have tried to get Weller to diss Liam, seeing his recent attacks on him, and he has been very polite and complimentary so far. Yet Liam makes it seem like this is an attack on him, and all go his troops to piss on Weller.

It's not like that I feel offended or something, I don't care really but my opinion is that it really doesn't matter whether he is right or wrong.
They were business (Pretty Green) and musical (Carnation) partners. He could say, yeah, Liam is legend, I'm always interested to hear his new stuff, yeah, it's good etc. I don't think that, for example, Liam is crazy about last Ashcroft's album but he won't talk shit about that record. Liam was saying something like, Richard is legend, one of the last true r'n'r stars and stuff like that. Weller didn't have to lie but you know, he didn't have to be 100% honest. He could say the same thing about Noel's solo work but he didn't.
And that is what I don't like about what Paul said. It's like that you can hear Noel speaking through him. He is smart enough to not call it shite but when he said that he didn't hear the album, that's basically him saying, singles were that good that I didn't bother to hear full album.
And that's actually something that Noel was saying about BDI or Liam's solo. Yeah, I heard a couple of tracks, yeah, you know, it sounds familiar etc. Same thing that Weller said. They always say few things to put Liam down but they say it in the way that is not obvious to everyone.
Musically, it just sounds like Beady Eye, which isn't necessarily a bad thing = it is a bad thing.
I only heard few songs = they were that shit that I didn't bother to hear the rest of it.
I would appreciate him more if he said that it was shit.

I really don't care about what Weller said.. Maybe I'd be more inclined if Noel didn't mention Weller in every single interview. People talk negatively about Liam's obsession with Lennon, which is annoying but at least it's a musical obsession whereas Noel has this cringing bromance with Weller. So, when it comes to either of them, I have a hard time believing their comments aren't influenced by their annoying bromance.

That's far more cringey. Noel is actually friends with Weller, lives next door to him, and loves his music. He's not worshiping a ghost tbf. I don't particularly agree with Weller's assessment, but there are clear differences in the healthiness of Noel's relationship to him and Liam's to Lennon.

But,come on you have to admit it's getting a tad ridiculous for Noel to continue to mention him & Weller in every interview. Thankfully, Liam seems to have kinda stopped discussing Lennon in every interview.

Give me FWIW any day

Whilst we're cherry-picking examples that support our arguments, try this on for size...
You better stop dreaming of the quiet life 'cause it's the one we'll never know And quit running for the runaway bus, 'cause those rosy days are few And stop apologising for the things you've never done Time is short and life is cruel, but it's up to us to change this town called Malice!
Rows and rows of disused milk floats stand dying in a dairy yard And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts Hanging out their old love letters, on the line to dry It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious in a town called Malice!
Struggle after struggle, year after year The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice; I'm almost stone cold dead in a town called Malice!
A whole street's belief in Sunday's roast beef gets dashed against the Co-op To either cut down on beer or the kids' new gear, it's a big decision in a town called Malice!
Ghost of a steam train echoes down my track It's at the moment bound for nowhere, just going round and round Playground kids and creaking swings, lost laughter in the breeze I could go on for hours -- and I probably will -- but I'd sooner put some joy back in this town called Malice...

Some people might say my life is in a rut But I'm quite happy with what I got People might say that I should strive for more But I'm so happy, I can't see the point
Something's happening here today A show of strength with your boys' brigade And I'm so happy and you're so kind You want more money, of course I don't mind To buy nuclear textbooks for atomic crimes And 'the public gets what the public wants!' But I want nothing this society's got ... Some people might get some pleasure out of hate Me, I've enough already on my plate People might need some tension to relax Me, I'm too busy dodging 'tween the flack
What you see is what you get You made your bed, you better lie in it You choose your leaders and place your trust As their lies wash you down and their promises rust You'll see kidney machines replaced by rockets and guns And 'the public wants what the public gets!' But I don't get what this society wants ... We talk and we talk until my head explodes I turn on the news and my body froze... These braying sheep on my TV screen make this boy this shout, make this boy scream!
I'm going underground Well let the brass bands play and feet start to pound Going underground So let the boys all sing, let the boys all shout for tomorrow

I was half in mind and half in need And as the rain came down, I dropped to my knees and I prayed I said, 'O Heavenly thing, please cleanse my soul I've seen all on offer and I'm not impressed at all!'
I was halfway home, I was half insane And every shop window I looked, everything just looked the same I said, 'now send me a sign to save my life 'Cause at this moment in time there's nothing certain in these days of mine'
It's a frightening thing when it dawns upon you That I know as much as the day I was born And though I wasn't asked, I might as well stay And promise myself each and every day
That when you're knocked on your back and your life's a flop And when you're down on the bottom, there's nothing left but to shout to the top! Shout to the top!

Have you ever chased the night that's sailed in front of you On a boat that's bound for Hope but left you in the queue? With your shouting, waving, taunting, flaunting friends as crew Telling you that every lie you ever heard was true Have you stood upon that dock? Have you ever had it blue?
