I said it would have charted higher had they put more effort in I just don't think it would have gone that high. Promotion makes people aware of a song it doesn't make them buy something they don't like and the with the reaction to it a decidedly mixed one from what I saw (much more so than his previous lead off singles) I think it would have struggled to get as high as Spaneli speculated. But we're not necessarily talking about buying. There's less effort involved in streaming a song, which also counts as a sale, than actually buying a song. When we're talking about promotion, it trickles down to places like Spotify too. Well you have made a case for it charting higher, I also think it would just not as high as you speculated due to the reation to the song.

Considering it missed 3 days of sales and the physical sales weren’t factored in yet it’s pretty safe to assume it would have charted a lot lot higher. Despite the negative vibes around the song by some fans and press it’s hung around in the charts far longer than maybe some expected. As said earlier, prob another chart jump in the next week or so once the album hits and the single is released physically. This isn’t the same as when IIHAG or TDOTL bombed. Those came and went with absolutely no traction. I said it would have charted higher had they put more effort in I just don't think it would have gone that high. It’s an interesting question for sure. I wonder how many downloads/streams it took to get to the Top 25 that week? Is there a site that shows you those sales? Let’s break it down a little. - Holy Mountain did just over 5,000 downloads/streams in 4 days, good for #70 or whatever it was. - The following week it charted at #69 with 5,000+ downloads/streams in 7 days. - So for week 1 he was averaging about 1,000 a day which would put him in the 8,000 range if given a full 7 days - Combine those 8,000 download/streams with potential physical sales from Noel’s website that still haven’t officially been part of the tally and I say you probably are getting close to a top 25-30 placement. * This is all fun speculation based on assumptions from previous sales and performances

Well you have made a case for it charting higher, I also think it would just not as high as you speculated due to the reation to the song. Maybe? But doesn't longevity also point to "reaction"? If the song was completely dismissed out of hand, then why has it hung around? There's a high probability that Holy Mountain will stay in the top 100 for another 3-4 weeks or so. It's "run" could be around 8 weeks when it's all said and done. That's nearly two months. I guess what I'm probably not articulating is that not only is there proof that it should have charted much higher, but that there's also sufficient proof that the reception (for all the Twitter hate) has not been as cold as some would think. So, I don't think the "reception" is as much of a deterrent for it possibly charting higher as you do.

If an American rock band like Arcade Fire, The National, The Strokes, etc had a song in the Billboard Top 100 it would be considered a smash hit. Very hard to accomplish stateside.

Well I guess we'll never know either way for sure. That is true. It reminds me of how TSOTL would have easily have been a #1 single if it weren’t for the physical sales and downloads releases 3+ weeks after it was released to radio. That is an eternity. Heavily bootlegged and grabbed by fans long ahead of the actual release date. Still a great showing at #3. Also Be Here Now would still have the record for most debut week sales if it weren’t released on a Thursday robbing it was 3 days of sales. Adele barely got ahead of it and she had the full week. You average what Oasis was doing daily that week over 7 days and Be Here Now would still be king. However none of this ever happened like that.

So, giving Noel a full week and physical sales, he AT LEAST charts in the top 30 (if we assume that physical and digital sales make up 10k). This also is assuming he promotes the same way he "promoted" that week. For reference, the #22 had 14k sales that week. Could more promotion have shifted him a couple thousand extra? Probably.

Lots of if's and but's there, I suppose it was possible. I just don't think enough people believe in the quality of the song to drive it that high. Considering it missed 3 days of sales and the physical sales weren’t factored in yet it’s pretty safe to assume it would have charted a lot lot higher. Despite the negative vibes around the song by some fans and press it’s hung around in the charts far longer than maybe some expected. Get the impression he don’t care if it gets to number 1 no promo at all on the build up to release day

Yeah, we're agonizing about this way more than him, most likely. He made the album he wanted, he knows it might not be for every one of his usual fans, and is releasing it anyway because it's what he wants to do. If it makes money, great, if not, well, he's rich enough not to be bothered.
I thought his ego would want to beat Liam in the charts, but he really just seems to be in a really chill place, mentally. Just doing what he wants when he wants.

He's also had a lot of success, both with Oasis and solo and this third album serves a completely different purpose than his previous solo albums and than Liam's album

When you're in a competitive space, you don't get to dictate who the competition is. As I said, I'm surprised that his ego didn't turn this into a marketing fight, but I'm willing to believe he's just doing what he wants for the fun of it. But make no mistake, it is a competition. All of it.

In The Heat of The Moment - Initial Chart Run
26-69-Out
Although it had a higher peak, Holy Mountain has done better.

In The Heat of The Moment - Initial Chart Run 26-69-Out Although it had a higher peak, Holy Mountain has done better. And it’ll likely chart again this week for the 5th time in 6 weeks and will most likely get another bump in the charts once Moon drops and the physical sales for Holy Mountain finally get counted. We are looking at an almost 2 month run. This song has little legs to it.

Of course Noel cares about a #1 album. Why would he have changed the release date of Who Built the Moon? because of Taylor Swift?

Very conflicting signs for Noel.
Holy Mountain: #28 UK Itunes It's a Beatufiul World: #31 UK ITunes
The #28 is fantastic, especially considering that Holy Mountain has been out for a long time. Stay power is always a really good sign.
However, you'd expect It's a Beautiful World to be trouncing Holy Mountain right now. That could be a warning sign against either interest, the song itself, or release strategy.

Surprised anyone is buying them from iTunes given they're free on YouTube, there are no b-sides and the album is out in a week!
