I'm still not getting the references to this being 'pop'. It doesn't sound like pop at all. It just sounds ancient. Maybe pop in the 60's. Pop.. as in top 40, dance hit, over commercialized music. Ah, we have different usages of what pop means. Even under your usage, the musical climate would never allow this song to qualify (in America). Hence the disparity.

Not for me this one. It's like Noel on standard mode, and even though it's an upbeat song, it makes me bored. Doesn't help that it's occompanied by a boring video. Shame, since I really like the album preview trailer.

Well Ricky Martin's song came out in 2000 so that's about the pop era that this music sounds like.

An interesting question is, will Noel address the mixed reaction? As much as I don't like to compare Liam and Noel, Liam does speak about the criticism that his music, and even his personal life, gets. But when I see recent interviews with Noel I wonder if the interviewers will be able to remove their tongue from his Holy Mountain long enough to ask him an honest question about the divisive nature of this new direction. Looking at that recent Chris Moyles interview, when Moyles was bigging up the song it reminded me of Comical Ali in front of a TV camera telling viewers Iraq is not being invaded while the American tanks are rampaging past him in the background.

I hope you don't mind me posting this Rolo . This is way more enjoyable than the actual song for me, you have a very special talent! Prefer the chord progression on your version - something delicate about it and your vocals are better than Noels. Unbelievable! (don't forget the handclaps ) I actually like this more too. The vocals actually have some range in them and aren't so muddled.

That's the thing for me with Noel's vocals - his voice is perfect when he's singing delicately rather than shouting like he's been doing the majority of HFB. Sometimes it works (Mighty I) but take What A Life for example - that's a classic soft Noel vocal but the song isn't classic Noel at all. WTSRTS, Alone On The Rope, etc. are my favorite of his and his vocals are softer. Let The Lord Shine A Light On Me, Falling Down, would sound worse if he was straining like on Holy Mountain. Rolo's cover showed me if Noel had a better arrangement I may had actually enjoyed the song. EDIT: Even on Mighty I, it has the loud-quiet dynamic to it, so his softer vocals help the quieter moments so much and add dynamic.

This reminds me of when McCartney released 'Coming Up' and 'Say Say Say'. A great musician who got sucked into the sappy pop scene. He eventually came back around but it took years. This is Noel's 'Coming Up' period. I hope it doesn't take as long for him to come back to his senses. Coming Up is a great song. In fact, you're absolutely right, it is quite a lot like Holy Mountain. Both are brilliant, upbeat, catchy, charming pop songs that rejuvenated a solo career. Stick arouuuuuunndd I saaayyyyyayyyyyy!

Yeah I think this is the first song I can think of that Noels vocals and the production ruined the song for me. The delivery just doesn't play to his strengths....

That's what happens when a musician goes from one genre into another- there will be a lot of fans saying 'No Way in Hell' and other ones saying 'Wow Great'. Genre jumping just feels like an attempt to be trendy and commercial to me- like when Steven Tyler did a country music album. Just awful. If Noel decided to do a Polka album next I'm sure I wouldn't like that one either, but some fans would probably think it was amazing.

You all know that most of the songs on the album will sound nothing like HM.

I really like the music video. Incidentally enough, it has 180,000 views, all by mystoryisgory. Fact.

I loved it on first listen and I still do. Of course everyone has it preferences, but I'm surprised about how some people really dislike this song.
It's poppy in the sense that it's uptempo, light and fun. But come on, it's not fockin Despacito. You can hear old Noel songs in it and lots of classic references (Beach boys, Ramones, Abba...). It's a bit like a Tarantino movie where lots of references from old movies collide into something new. The thing I do not like is that it sounds too much satured.
I guess it has relation with the sign of the times. For some reason people is not looking for fun, happy, quick songs, and believe me, they tend to be the hardest ones to write. But Noel's great asset always has been bringing joy (and melancholy, ok) with his music. And he is doing it with this one.

I think the reaction to the tune may have been better if it was a minute or so shorter, the final minute of the song really seems to drag for me.

I'm really into it now, it's just a grower. I feel its kind of begging for a distorted Velvet Underground/Sonic Youth style solo to come it at the end. Would help it move away from the poppy side of things and into its 70's Roxy Music side.

I'm starting to get a sneaky suspicion from the trailer that She Taught Me How to Fly might end up being my favourite HFB song...

Just bass drum, claps and the whistle and then POW back into the layers of guitars/synths/whatever it is.

oi Love them live. They're honestly superb if you're in the right mood (ahem) and the right age. The gig I went to at the King Power after Leicester won the league is by far the best musical event I've ever been to - including any NG/LG gigs. But, I have to say, I can't listen to their albums all the way through. Live they're top class, but their recent studio output is iffy. I like Kasabian as much as the next man, and im a Leicester City fan. But how they could even come close to topping anything by a Gallagher is beyond me. Each to their own of course Well unfortunately I never got to see Oasis live. I've seen Noel five times, and he's been great and I've loved it every time - and then managed to catch Liam at Leeds this year. But at 22, I have to say that day in sunny Leicester was an experience. One of them 'communal' events that I imagine maybe just hints at the tiniest inkling of what it would have been like to have seen Oasis at Maine Road, or Knebworth or the Etihad. It was just mad.

I've probably listened to this one more than any tune on As You Were.
I really dig it. Think it's boss.

I don't hear Ricky Martin in this song at all - it's just two words! I don't think that Noel ever heard this song tbh. And I'd rather listen to this type of songs than plodding-mid-tempo ones. I also think that he clearly has fun. But to each their own. PS I've seen a couple of ‘plagiarist’ videos. Are they made by a guy who hates Oasis? I don't remember correctly. I heard Ricky Martin loud and clear. RM is very popular in Australia. He was a judge on The Voice AU. Maybe he's not as well known in the UK? I'm not from UK. Like I've said before - I thought he had just one hit.

Seriously i just don't hear that Ricky Martin song on HM. Is it just because Noel sings she fell and he sings She bangs? Actually, this " She bangs" moment has a very specific and quite original rythmic pattern to it which is exactly the same in Noel's song. (However it sounds, i know, but it's true ). Saying that, it's not Noel's fault. The fucker who brought this up first is responsible. Most people, me included ,were lucky enough to never hear any of Ricky Martin's stuff, we could have live happily ever after, with zero worries, but no, She Bangs. Thanks. Well done. This!

Only the married guys will admit it I didn't even know that 'She bangs' exicted. Maybe that's because I'm too young and I'm coming from a non-English speaking country.
