Most of modern pop songs are super bland and dull, a catchy song is a rarity. this is because nowadays songs are built on just one hook. Back in the day, we've had fully formed songs, even for pop songs. Now it's just one line like "bitch better have my money" or "despacito", "dont believe me just watch" stuff like that. People dont remember the rest of the song and dont care, because the attention span has shortened drastically in the past few years, blame social media. The hook is the only thing that will get stuck in their head and that's how mainstream artists are making a carrer. It's not full choruses or songs now, just short advertising slogans wrapped around 2 mins of heavy rhythm during when you can check facebook or instagram. Music is not a kind of art where you sit and listen anymore, it became something to be the background for something else. Ok, grandpa. Did you also tie an onion to your belt, as was the style at the time? I don't enjoy a lot of current pop. I'm 40. Grunge, britpop, and whatever was labeled "alternative" in 90s US radio dominated my coming-of-age years, so that's my first love as far as pop goes. But there are plenty of artists that write "proper" pop music today, and who wouldn't have been out of place back in the day. Gin Wigmore, Foxy Shazam, Echosmith, All Time Low, Ninja Sex Party, Panic at the Disco, Lorde... Change the arrangements, and they all could have been huge hits in 1995,and they write as complex a piece of pop as any from that era.

This is the third album he’s released a weaker first single when I’m sure there’s way better tracks on there imo.

I never thought that Noel will make something different and refreshing... so glad that he made THIS type of record. Refreshing yes. Different - not quite. This song harks back to the BHN Owen Morris era. But yes, I agree. I am glad he is going back to this type of record. I couldn't be doing with another CY album. I think it's got a kind of It's Gettin Better (Man!) vibe going on. Same sense of fun and joy.

And good rock music hasn't gone anywhere.

It seems I can't hear (Paul Weller playing) organ at all. :/ Someone needs to OOPS this track upside their head.

Since there don't seem to be such thing as single versions that have clean intros/outros in the digital age, has anyone else noticed that Holy Mountain has a little bit of Fort Knox tacked onto the beginning, and doesn't fade out completely? Perhaps Who Built the Moon will be one continuous segue à la The KLF's Chill Out?

so i'm out for a long run a short while ago... i don't run to music. and there it is...'she fell she fell, under my spell...' pops into my f-ing head, flutes and all. catchy. i still don't like it...but maybe it's growing on me? in the meantime- i bought the new Wolf Alice to cleanse the pallet.

This track is confirming my fears that Noel's voice can't carry an album like this. It's going to full of interesting sounds and bland vocals.

I gave it a few more spins just now, I don't mind it but a little indifferent about it. I can certainly see why some like it and why others don't. What makes me laugh is I'm pretty sure a few who are praising the balls off it have hammered stuff sounding retro before. Is it different for Noel? Maybe a little but this doesn't sound like Be Here Now it sounds like a tune being played in a 60's dance hall with people jiving to it! I don't mind a bit of retro stuff so no problems here. Every time I here the vocal on the verses I can't get C'est La Vie by the Stereophonics out of my head . I probably prefer that though.

We all knew Noël's album would probably bring about polarizing opinions, I just hope we can maintain a sense of stupidity around here over next several months....
Thanks.

History will look back at it in a different light than what you read today. Mighty I was polarizing when it released, but now, an overwhelming majority categorizes it as at the very least a solid track. While I don't care for HM maybe I will a few years from now. With that said, there's no need for toxic discussion and pissing contests for Holy Mountain. We're better than that.

After a few more listens it sounds like a tongue-in-cheek ‘80s charity single that we’d get from the likes of Hale & Pace or French & Saunders.

I'm just surprised by how polarising it is given that it isn't far out.

Some of the comparisons on both sides have been completely off. I do think that it has that classic Noel euphoric feeling, but that doesn't automatically equate to BHN. I also don't think it's particularly experimental, but then again it's the single. If there was going to be a non-experimental track released, it would be this one. But I do think it does sound different for him. Not a very guitar heavy track, it's hard to think of a Noel track with less guitar than this one.. It's definitely more chunky too, and the interpolation of the whistle feels like a very un-Noel type deal too.

For all the people complaining about how loud Holy Mountain is, it's far less of a headache to my ears than either HFB or Chasing Yesterday.
