I've been following this for the last few months ever since The Twilight Sad started retweeting news and images concerning this on Twitter. This is the first I've heard and my god it is good.....really really good! Sounds more unusual than The Twilight Sad but retains that melancholy and underlying menace that James excels at. It's just as good I think which says a lot. That accordion drone; talk about adding a haunting quality to the tune! I've never heard it used to such effect! I'm generally against Scottish acts using traditional folk instruments in their songs - I like Scottish folk music (it's all my mum and dad played when I grew up!) but it more often than not always comes off as cringeworthy and trite when Scottish acts incorporate it in their music. It's so forced and gives off the 'Scottish Cringe' effect for me personally but these guys have finally found a place for it! Not familiar with Kathryn Joseph and Marcus Mackay but it will be well worth checking out after this.

What a gorgeous tune, sounds not similar to the Sads, but beauty in darkness. Knowing his love for Delia Derbyshire davidjay might gonna like this song too. This song has the same "chemistry" as their cover by INXS "Never Tear Us Apart" which is brilliant as well. I've never heard of Kathryn Joseph and Marcus MacKay, but definitely worth to check them out. What a great great music year! Weller, Slowdive, Liam, Mogwai, The National, (maybe) Noel, The Queen Is Dead reissue, The Jam reissue and this one. I've pre-ordered Out Lines debut album and I'm really really looking forward to it.

Can't wait to hear their debut album! Outstanding, thanks mimmi. Vic Galloway's show is the best on BBC Radio Scotland, always offers new alternative music. More hit than miss. Interesting how organic these songs sound - sounds very sophisticated but there's not much elaboration in the studio, making the live performances almost exactly the same.

I love Vic Galloway's show and how he support Scottish music and bands. I loved the other Scottish presenter who had own show on BBC Scotland (Jim...something), but for some reason he had to quit and it was a shame. Just like FRabbit releasing an EP with 3 songs and Matt Berninger (The National) relaeasing and touring as EL VY 2 years ago, this kind of side project/collaboration gives bands a break to try something new on each own. I can't wait to hear this debut album. Music never bores me.

From The Twilight Sad's mailing list:
Hi Everyone. James here.
Today sees the release of Out Lines debut album "Conflats". It's a project that I've been working on for a couple of years now with Kathryn Joseph and Marcus Mackay. I'm very proud that its being released on Mogwai's very own Rock Action Records.
I'm incredibly proud of the record. I hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed making it.
Cheers James
P.S we've been working away on new Twilight Sad songs & we'll hopefully see you next year.

I listened to this album over Christmas mimmi. It's more abstract than Twilight Sad and is a slow burner that has slowly creeped into my head, and reading behind the concept of it all is fascinating. It's really interesting reading the motives behind it, and that turmoil really comes through in the music. Quite dissonant and bleak at times though.

I wish I could express my thoughts and how I feel for the music I love just like you do, matt. Many people would say their music (The Twilight Sad, Out Lines) is miserable and depression maker, but I see beautiness in darkness. I can't explain why I love this kind of music, I just really love it.
