Yeah, I think this album (and this band!) deserves its own thread  As many of you probably already now, The War on Drugs have a new album out on August 25th, named 'A Deeper Understanding'. I totally loved their previous record, 'Lost in the Dream', best album of the last 10 years hands down in my opinion. I don't think the new album can top that... although the songs released so far are very promising. Tracklist & album cover:01. Up All Night 02. Pain 03. Holding On 04. Strangest Thing 05. And in more interesting news... they performed a brand new song for the first time a couple of days ago at a US radio station. It's called 'Pain' and it's the one that includes the album title in the lyrics.
I can't wait to listen to the album version as I can already say that it's my favorite track among the ones we've heard so far. Just beautiful.

You say it can't be topped, and you're probably right but I'm digging Thinking Of A Place and Strangest Thing as much as the best tracks from Lost In The Dream. As for Pain, I'm not going to listen to it until I hear the studio version! I have a weird aversion to hearingany song performed live before I hear the studio version. The album though surely will not disappoint.

Love 'Holding On', heard it on the radio a zillion times.....sounds kinda like the Grateful Dead, with the keyboard part and all.

I wish I could enjoy his singing more. The songs are beautiful musically but his singing style is a small minus for me.
It doesn't bother me in all the songs so that's a good thing.

I think a bit the same thing. Not a fan of his voice but I like the songs. The "Lost in the Dream" record was very good. |

They indeed sound quite like late '80s Brent Mydland-era Grateful Dead; they actually recorded a cover of "Touch of grey" for a GD tribute album last year: But it sounds way better live with a muckier sound: |

I feel like Thinking of a Place kind of perfects their sound to be honest - can't see them topping that one for me - and then I enjoyed Holding On because of the faster pace and synth-strings and the like. Although I don't mind these last two, it's getting to point where they're just being so predictable. It's weird because I would imagine you could work some new influences into their sound quite easily - it's certainly not hard for me to imagine some funkier ryhthms or crisper instrumentals being thrown in the mix, maybe some brass or something. More vocal range. Anything. |

I don't; I was aware that it was released last year, but didn't listen to anything else than that War On Drugs cover simply because I'm too busy listening to the Grateful Dead themselves, they release so many box sets of live recordings that I can't stay the pace. I buy them but still haven't got round to broaching the career-spanning 80 CDs box set they released last year for instance; I'm currently in the middle of the second Spring 1990 box set they released a few years ago (a good one, by the way, Jerry's on fine form). But I'll grab a copy of the tribute album if you tell me it's worth it! |

But I'll grab a copy of the tribute album if you tell me it's worth it! You're definitely a bigger Dead fan than me; I only own Workingman's Dead, American Beauty....and the tribute album. I find song covers interesting, a different interpretation of a song, normally.....most of the covers on Day of the Dead are a different take but some are more straight forward... A band called Fucked Up does 'Cream Puff War', a hardcore version, normally not a fan of hardcore music but I really like it.... Hell, just get the album at your local library, that's what I did.....or YouTube a few songs before buying it. God bless. |

Here's 'Up All Night', the opening track.
It sounds very eclectic and quite different: almost shoegaze-ish guitars, fat '80s drums and deep piano/synths. Not too sure about the vocals or the vocal melody here to be honest.
