I'm in it for the outtakes. Those Anthology ones found on volume 2 and 3 were incredible. Especially the banter between members. Fun stuff. Interesting stuff. Sugar plum fairy, sugar plum fairy.

It always seems to be a straight battle between Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper for the title of greatest album ever, and quite rightly too in my opinion as . I absolutely love Pet Sounds but maybe it's a cultural difference as I still prefer Sgt Pepper, which if push came to shove, is probably my favourite Beatles album. It's the highest selling album in Britain and I think one of the reasons is that it plays up to old musical traditions of the Edwardian music hall, although turning it on its head in spectacular fashion with its psychedelic, very English imagery and weird soundscapes. It's probably the most original Beatles album in that it is steeped in the traditions that the band grew up with in Liverpool but which is contemporised for hippy culture. The perfect summary was 'Yorkshire Tea laced with LSD'. The cover art makes that link with local heroes/northern English stars like pre-war Liverpool striker Albert Stubbins or Stan Laurel in amongst pop culture icons of the 1960s. There's more 'roots' to it than any other Beatles album, but Lennon and McCartney's songwriting go hand in hand with each other on this one and although they wrote them separately, still had a loose thematic and stylistic feel to it that makes the album the most cohesive. There's no doubt about it for me, but Lennon and McCartney were both at their absolute peaks from '66-'67.

Crazy how good this album is as it is but even crazier that it should have had Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on it as well! I'll probably get the 2 disk version I love stuff like this but I brought The Wall Immersion Box Set a year or so ago and haven't listen the 2/3 of the stuff on it Nice to look at every 6 months though Yeah. Strawberry and Penny would have elevated Pepper to an even higher plane of existence. Not sure where they would have slotted in because they came out long before the Pepper concept was fully formed. Would have put Strawberry Field in track three if we're talking about flow, along with Penny Lane in place of When I'm 64. That would mean leaving out Lucy In The Sky which isn't ideal but because I think they're similarly paced, I'd opt for Strawberry Fields.

Let me add, the most amazing thing about Pet Sounds is that one man wrote it. As opposed to Sgt. Pepper's, which needed about four musical geniuses. And no, I don't mean Ringo. But seriously, one man wrote Pet Sounds. Find the interviews with the session musicians who worked with him, people like Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye etc. They all say the same thing: Brian Wilson wrote just about every note on Pet Sounds, which is staggering.

Brian Wilson didn't really have anyone to lean on musically. When you know that there's another guy in your band that can write 4 or 5 great songs, it makes your job easier. When you're the only guy, and you're the only one making decisions, and you are your own producer with dozens of session musicians at your command, I mean, it's amazing that he kept all of those pieces moving.

Sgt. Pepper still doesn't do it for me. Its not in my top 3 Beatles records let alone best of all time. I appreciate why people love it and why its a cultural milestone but in regard to it and Pet Sounds I tend to agree with Spaneli.

I think part of understanding why Sgt Pepper is such a highly acclaimed record is understanding the context of the time the record was released. This album WAS the pinnacle of the 1960s spirit, from what I gather. I mean, this is a decade that went from doo-wop 50s style songs with the same chord progression to Black Sabbath and Frank Zappa.
Even the Beatles - or rather, especially The Beatles. Listening to You Know My Name (Look up the Number) is remarkable, to think it came out in 1970 as the bside to Let it Be. Then you find out that the song actually dates from the Sgt Peppers sessions in 1967 and you reach down to pick up the pieces of your brain - you just blew your mind out ("in a car"?).

The new remix in surround sound was released today - it sounds glorious. There's so many little nuance there that was buried in the original pressings. It brings every vocal and every instrument to life.

Definitely glad to have this in my collection. Probably only really need the 2 CD version. Not a ton to write home about with CD 3 and 4.
