Surely this has to be in surround sound! And 6 CDs in the super deluxe - I wonder what gems we will get with this...I know what to save up for now.

*Gasp* Beatles Bible is an excellent forum btw. Have been on there for 7 years or so. Haven't been on there for months though. What always astounds me is how there's still news every day even though this band broke up about 47 years ago.

Greatest album of all time just got greater!
The power of those harmonies, backing and double tracked vocals is unbelievable - amazing just how much more oomph there are to songs like Lucy In The Sky and Lovely Rita. Cannot wait - this is the version of the album I've been wanting for years.

If any album deserves the modern surround sound treatment, its this one. As an iPod user and somebody who predominately listens to music through headphones, I was disappointed that the 2009 stereo remasters were not surround sound - it was awkward listening to albums where vocals are channelled through one earphone and instruments on the other. I'm not sure who was in charge of the 2009 remasters but they were massively behind the times by neglecting headphone users. yes, the 'fake stereo' bullshit. all the vocals on one side, and the instruments on the other. but remember that 2009 stereo box was merely 'remastered' --- not remixed. there's a difference there. i received the stereo box as a christmas gift back when it came out (and still think it's terrific) and i predicted back then that they would eventually remix these albums for a true, full stereo sound. i truly believe this was by design, to have everyone buy the stereo box first, then later on remix them into true stereo. i am a big beatles fan but sorry it just strikes me as a blatant cash grab and i will NOT be buying this. the stereo box is good enough for me.

....and remember a true stereo master of sgt. peppers doesn't exist. the album was originally mixed and mastered in mono. hence the 'fake stereo' effect on the original 'stereo' pressing and the remasters.

Cash grab or not, I think it is absolutely essential that The Beatles are remixed in glorious surround sound so I will be buying the super deluxe version personally. I have three copies of the album already - the 1987 CD releases, and the 2009 mono (in the boxset) and stereo release. As a predominant headphone user, the only one that does the album any justice for me personally is the original mono pressing and I think that goes for most Beatles albums. The stereo remastering is what gets my goat personally as opposed to this essential release - I can't understand that after 40 years and with the technology to remix in surround sound, people thought the rushed stereo releases were worthy of rereleases. George Martin himself said they were mere afterthoughts and the fact that neither Martin nor his son Giles were involved in the 2009 remasters maybe suggests as much. Now granted, remixing the album for surround sound is an incredibly complex and time consuming process that may cost a lot of money so that perhaps goes someway to explaining why this never happened. And after all, I think the mono mixes are great, but the only issue is that what with the 1960s technology, mono can sometimes sound compressed on the more elaborate Beatles tracks. When I listen to the '1' remix of Penny Lane, I can pick out the double bass from the oboes, the harmonium from the pianos, and the flute from the cor anglais. On mono, it is a bit more difficult to pick out each individual instrument and the clarity of the '1' remix just gives that song the energy and panache it must have had in the mind of Paul McCartney when he composed it, and a vibrancy to it that I didn't know existed. This hasn't happened yet, but I dream of hearing a remix of Revolution and I can only imagine that the distortion and dirtiness that John Lennon wanted on it would only be amped up to a higher level of aggression in a surround sound mix. I say this as a super fan of The Beatles too - I'm willing to allow them to rob them off my money (okay, various rereleases of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack may be a bit much!) but not because I'm a fan who will kneel before all things Beatles associated and buy any tacky shit possible, but because I like the idea of perfecting the most perfect band that ever existed in my opinion. In a way, it's like reclaiming a sense of lost innocence and rediscovering these songs all over again. The thrill I get from hearing those snippets is mind blowing and euphoric like it's the first time I'm hearing these songs. I felt like that when I bought the '1' album in 2015 despite thinking I knew it all about these songs - the original release of that in 2000 was the first ever Beatles album I heard in its entirety, and in a sense, I'd like to think that my purchase of the remixed '1' album is like starting that all over again. I pray that Sgt Pepper is the first of the remixes of ALL Beatles albums, and until future technology allows us to experience lifelike holograms of The Beatles actually playing in our living rooms along with the additional orchestras, then these surround sound remixes will be the perfect incarnation of the band!

I wonder if we should start a Sgt. Pepper Anniversary Edition thread, since I expect we'll talk a little bit about this release and we're starting to derail the current thread.
Could the mods move the last few posts to a new thread? Thanks!

I love Sgt. Pepper and I completely understand why it's often cited as either the #1 or #2 best album ever, but I personally like Revolver much better.

Crazy how good this album is as it is but even crazier that it should have had Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane on it as well!
I'll probably get the 2 disk version
I love stuff like this but I brought The Wall Immersion Box Set a year or so ago and haven't listen the 2/3 of the stuff on it
Nice to look at every 6 months though

Strawberry and Penny would have elevated Pepper to an even higher plane of existence. Not sure where they would have slotted in because they came out long before the Pepper concept was fully formed.

I love Sgt. Pepper and I completely understand why it's often cited as either the #1 or #2 best album ever, but I personally like Revolver much better. Ive always found it fascinating over the decades how Pepper is perceived. Up until the mid 90s it seemed like Pepper was always claimed as the best album of all time. Then trendy new publications began to list Pet Sounds above it. That is something I never agreed with. Nice record. Innovative record but not the greatest in this man's opinion. Over the last 10 years or so, now Revovler is the record often being singled out as the best album ever. Keep in mind this is now 40+ years later. Interesting to see how views and interpretations change with time. Not saying you in particular but overall.

Interesting to see how views and interpretations change with time. Not saying you in particular but overall. I love Sgt. Pepper's. I think it's a fantastic record, definitely in the top 3 (I'm a Beatles super fan). Not to be trendy, but in my opinion, Pet Sounds is better. The Beatles didn't really approach the level of innovation that Brian Wilson had on that album. They made it more palatable, but few people have produced music at the level of Pet Sounds, from the mixes of instrumentation, to the key changes (I still don't know what key Wouldn't it Be Nice is in), to the harmonies, and just the amazing music theory behind it. Quite frankly, Pet Sounds has always been a musicians' album. Brian Wilson brought the best session musicians in the US together and locked them in a recording studio. The level of musicality is at such a high plane; reading the musical notation for it is like reading a cheat code for music. Over the years, as I've become more involved in recording and writing, Pet Sounds has only gained stature. Sgt. Pepper has a lot of the ear-candy. Those easily identifiable pop hooks that the Beatles were great at, but I think Pet Sounds is better crafted and executed album. So for me, in terms of the album as an art form, Pet Sounds is the high water that no one has really approached since. Nevertheless, I think Highway 61 Revisited is better than both

No Carnival of Light? I know it's probably shit but I don't care. Now is the chance to release it, isn't it?

I just like that style of music a bit better. I absolutely love Pet Sounds too. That's also one of my most favourite albums ever. It's innovative, has simple yet very personal and melancholic lyrics and is well produced. Plus it has the most beautiful song ever on it. At the time it wasn't that acclaimed and didn't do as well as Brian hoped. In the UK they loved it. Luckily it's been praised more and more over the years. Both very influential, great and innovative albums, but apples and pears.

Oh come on, the concept was a lot of baloney apart from the first two songs and the reprise. The other songs just happened to fit in well, stylistically. I once heard they were supposed to be in the place of When I'm 64 and Fixing A Hole, but not sure. Fantastic songs though. Having said that, Magical Mystery Tour is also a great "album".

I do think Revolver is their best album, in fact I also prefer Abbey Road and Rubber Soul to Sgt Pepper
Sgt Pepper is a 9/10 album but the Beatles were a phenomenon who did so many truly fantastic albums that it only comes 4th overall (maybe even 5th depending on which mood I'm in listening to the White Album)
Sgt Peppers scope and imagination cannot be understated and as a concept it's incredible however as songs there's only Day in the Life and She's Leaving Home which would make my top 25 Beatles songs
