I’ve always been a fan of Ryan Adams, but my obsession for him increased in the latest months and the main reason behind that is quite simple: his new album Prisoner (which hit the stores yesterday but leaked just before Christmas) is, simply put, fucking great. I haven’t been as hooked on an album as I am on Prisoner since Lost in the Dream by The War on Drugs (released in spring 2014, and which incidentally is still my absolute favorite album from this decade so far). Prisoner is a sincere, haunting, gut-wrenching breakup album. You can feel genuine pain in every word that Ryan is singing, or in any chord he is playing. It’s so direct and brutal that it sometimes feels too simple or bare. There’s a song called ‘Shiver and Shake’ which is just four chords, a ghostly synth and some of the most brutally honest lyrics ever sung by Ryan: “ I close my eyes, I see you with some guy/ Laughing like you never even knew I was alive”, the voice breaks, the synth soars. Fucking hell, what a track. In spite of all this sadness, I almost feel a sort of uplifting undertone in this album. It’s a bit like when you drop the mask, you decide to share your pain with somebody else and you instantly feel better. It’s therapeutic. Musically speaking, Prisoner has ‘80s written all other it. The good part of the ‘80s, of course: Springsteen, The Cure, The fucking Smiths. Jangly chords, arpeggiated Marr-esque riffs. ‘Anything I Say to You Now’ and the title track sounds very Smithsy. ‘Outbound Train’ is pure Bruce Springsteen and Ryan does nothing to hide his influence. ‘Doomsday’ is far from being a happy song but the harmonica at the beginning will put a smile on your face anyway. The first track, ‘Do You Still Love Me?’, is a blatant homage to ‘80s hair metal and might be the only one that feels a little bit out of place, although it has grown on me quite a lot. Also... it is worth noting that Ryan recorded the album in his studio, just him, his friend Charlie at the mixing desk and a drummer. He wrote and played everything you hear on the record, bar the drums on the majority of the tracks and the organ/synth intro in ‘Do You Still Love Me?’. The man is a huge talent, just in case you didn’t know. I do hope that some of you will enjoy this record as much as I do!

How does it compare to his other recent output? Ashes & Fire is maybe my favourite album of his - if it's anywhere near that then this will be great.

His older albums have always been a bit hit and miss for me, loved Heartbreaker and Gold but none of his others have really stood out, just the odd song from each album. His self titled album was superb and I've really enjoyed Prisoner so far. His live shows really are something tho, he always puts on a great show.

I was a big, big fan of his 2014 self-titled album when it came out. It's still a great album and, although certainly not his best, it is definitely my favourite. Being his latest before Prisoner (ok, it's 1989, but you got it), how do you compare their sound and style? If it's in a similar vein I might as well check it soon

How does it compare to his other recent output? Ashes & Fire is maybe my favourite album of his - if it's anywhere near that then this will be great. It's not really similar to Ashes & Fire in my opinion. A&F was soft, mellow, refined, very american-sounding (I don't know if this even makes sense!), filled with hope. Summer sunset vibes all over it. Prisoner is definitely rougher, both musically and lyrically. It's a very blunt and straightforward record, it goes straight to the point. I do get why some people say it's almost too blunt. Sonically I'd say it's an evolution of his 2014 self-titled album (which I really love by the way). And it's quite similar to his 1989 cover album in terms of sound and influences.

Very excited to get my hands on this one. I loved his 3 releases in 2005 (Cold Roses double album, JAcksonville City Nights, 29) and the latest self titled, with a smattering of tracks from all other ones. His BBC Session from 2007 is highly recommended.

I have it on CD, a member here ages ago uploaded it when Ryan Adams supported Oasis during the Canadian leg of the DOYS tour. I'll see if I can find it and maybe rip it. The tracklist is...(mind you, I think its incomplete, but sounds fine as it is) 1. Halloween Head 2. Goodnight Hollywood Blvd 3. Oh My God, Whatever, Etc 4. Carolina Rain 5. Blue Hotel 6. How do you keep Love Alive? 7. Desire 8. Down in a Hole 9. I Taught myself how to grow old 10. Let it Ride 11. Two 12. Blue sky blues

I think Ryan has really surpassed himself with this album cycle. Prisoner is amazing and most of these B-sides are excellent, I'd say that more than half of them are as good as the songs on the record itself! And at the end we got 31 songs, that's almost three albums worth of material. Here's a Spotify link for the b-sides playlist (which is missing two tracks, 'Lookout' and 'The Cold', which are available in the physical boxset only). play.spotify.com/album/5m8Tmja0m0RCigISwcjQMz

It's a really strong set of b-sides, as good as the released album imo.

Ryan performed 'Outbound Train' on Colbert last night. The live version sounds like Springsteen with jangly guitars. (mp3 rip available HERE in the official Ryan Adams bootleg thread )

New single from Ryan.
It sounds like Springsteen covering The Beatles using The Byrds' 12 string guitars.

New single from Ryan. It sounds like Springsteen covering The Beatles using The Byrds' 12 string guitars. Yeah I really like it - a continuation of the style and lyrics from Prisoner. And what I love about Ryan Adams is that, although a great songwriter and brilliant lyricist, he wears his influences on his sleeves in terms of the sonic influences of late. It doesn't take away from the actual songs however as they are brilliant in their own unique way. The Prisoner album is the most blatant in where the influences derive from, and he positively embraces it - interesting how he wraps the album in reverb like an album from the 1980s, and I think it's all the better for it. Definitely my favourite Ryan Adams album since Love Is Hell. I must admit that I loved the guy's eccentricity back in the day when he had no filter and would just release everything he wrote and recorded; a few albums veering from utter genius to complete crap in the space of one song! These days, he's a bit more mellow in his approach and the more calculated approach to album production and release (releasing original material a few years at a time now, rather than every year) is resulting in a purple patch not seen for a good 15 years.

Take Me Home He’s a hellishly talented mad bastard, so prolific and seems to love throwing out everything he records (also love the nod to Springsteen on the Wednesday album cover).Prisoner was my favourite album of 2017 so can’t wait for this. He did muse on twitter about releasing Blackhole so there’s a big chance it could be the third one. By far my favourite singer-songwriter of the 21st century. And in my opinion, the last true rockstar in that singer-songwriter mould? Nothing is contrived about his persona and anything he says goes.
