I see a lot of Oasis fans praising the Monkeys, but never understood why. I have heard quite a few of their stuff but all seemed rather mediocre to me, even their hits. So that's my question for AM fans (or even just people who like the band): what make you love them ? Same here. I like a few songs but that's it. Most of their stuff sounds like generic, early-noughties indie to me.

Arctic Monkeys, although Muse are the beter live band and their early material is awesome.

If you are talking about bands with great album songs, AM are the one.
Their first two albums are littered with genuine non-single anthems.
Songs the general British public know.
A Certain Romance etc.

Alex Turner's singing could be a turn off but I like it. Like I said, their guitar riffs are really simple and good. They're probably better live, though. At least I thought the songs sonded fucking great when I played through an amp. I think I like them because they sound like a great indie band. It's hard to explain. They sound so laid-back, just some lads having fun making music. Btw, what do you think of Fluorescent Adolescent? It's always been my favourite AM song and still one of my favourite songs in general.

I think it's the melodies I find really weak. And, maybe that's just me, but I feel something something very superficial from their music. For example, take The Coral. Same generation, both british indie bands, both claim to be inspired by 90's Oasis, but if we're just talking about songs quality, there isn't any comparison for me : The Coral are far, far superior.

I'm speaking about the first two albums when I say this but Turner's lyrics and how he fits them together in a way that should seem awkward but always works really well. Also the simple but great guitar riffs that make the songs so catchy and memorable. I can really only name like 5 songs that I like after Favourite Worst Nightmare though, they really seemed to go downhill after that. And no, I'm not forgetting AM. All the songs just seem really slow and boring which is the complete opposite of the early stuff, it didn't get repetitive because the songs were usually only about 2 minutes, made their mark then left.

So that's my question for AM fans (or even just people who like the band): what make you love them ? Alex Turner was praised for his social realist lyrics and, in fairness, he is a wordsmith of high quality when he's on it. Without his really good and perceptive lyrics though, they'd just be as shite as bands like Carl Barat's laughably bad Dirty Pretty Things or The Enemy. That's not taking anything away because lyrics are very important in music - if it weren't for Alex Turner, just imagine the illiterate bell whiffs of landfill indie we'd be left with. So there's undoubtedly an authenticity to them that 99% of indie rock bands lack. I really like them, I have all their albums but I'm not their biggest fan, primarily because although there's depth to the songs, I find their sound a bit tedious after a while and they the lack the melodies to draw you in. That debut was massively overrated though I think - it seemed a case of NME desperately trying to be the tastemakers and form 'trends' that they think is 'cool'. But they're definitely worthy of praise - they're one of the smarter bands out there who don't just think in terms of tiresome and generic indie rock cliches of getting drunk, having a good night out and hooking up with girls (or in other words, see Catfish & The Bottlemen).

I've been mostly indifferent about Arctic Monkeys for a while, but I've come around recently. Their good songs (Mardy Bum, A Certain Romance etc.) have always been great, their sound is very sharp, the lyrics are above and beyond what you get in indie bands nowadays. I love their nonalbum stuff (Leave Before the Lights Come On, Bigger Boys & Stolen Sweethearts, Who The Fuck Are AM EP) which shows that Alex Turner has a pretty great songwriting range, although their first albums are somewhat similar in sound and style.
I always loved Suck It And See - lyrically alone not many albums can compete with it, and the sound is a great evolution as well. Not many 2005 era indie bands have managed to age and mature as great as AM have IMO - their sound has completely changed without feeling cheap or aimed at the mainstream market for easy cash.

I'm sure that they are the biggest ''young'' band in the world today but I'm not sure that kids in Chile or Serbia or Japan understand every word that he is singing. In fact, lots of them don't understand a word he's saying :-D And those who know English very well, I'm not sure that they can ''catch'' every local reference, joke, slang...to really understand him 100% and fully appreciate him as a writer. So there is something else, not only his lyrics that separate them from bands like Enemy etc. They have good songs, good albums, great singles, great drummer, hot singer etc. And that is why are they popular all over the world and above all the other indie bands.

No contest. AM all the way. Muse are awful.
Alex Turner needs to ditch Miles Kane though. Deadweight.

Muse hands down! The Resistance was a little disappointing but 2nd Law and Drones were pretty good. And anything before Resistance was absolutely fucking amazing. No one compares to them live. The sound they create is massive. Their creating process goes far and wide and they still have a message after all these years. They certainly have become my favorite band since oasis released DBTT. I can't say enough about Muse and I guess it's needed since no one likes them here baha!

So that's my question for AM fans (or even just people who like the band): what make you love them ? Easy but catchy guitar riffs, good melodies (not great, but definitely good), the fact that they're all solid musicians (Matt is great) with the ability to create a distinct sound and evolve through the years, Alex's voice which I really like and most of all his lyrics. He's probably one of the greatest if not the greatest lyricist to have come out of the UK in the last 15 years

I'm firmly on the fence with this one...
Am I fuck, Arctic Monkeys all day everyday and twice on a Sunday.
I can stick AM's back catalogue on and gladly sit there for hours, rarely skipping tracks at all. I like pretty much every song they ever did, some more than others of course but they're all decent.

Artic Monkeys are good but from 2000s indie rock bands I'd choose both Libertines and Strokes over AM. Even Libertines with only 2 proper albums seem to play more in my playlists. There's just more feeling.
For example, I was thinking of making an ad for searching musicians to play with or to form a band. I thought about bands/artists to list as an influence. Both The Strokes and Libertines would've made it but I'm not that sure about the Monkeys even though Alex has created some catchy riffs that I like to unconsciously play.
