I barely know Artic Monkeys. My brother had one album of them: Suck It and See. Listened to it once and never gone back to them. I like Muse, saw them at the Amsterdam Arena a few years ago. Suck it and See is woeful tbf, their worst album. I'd recommend their first two albums and AM. Humbug has some brilliant songs. Suck it and see, I agree it's maybe their 'worst' album. But if a record like 'Suck it and see' is your worst, then you're a pretty good band This song is on that album, brilliant, maybe forgotten track

Peaky Blinders made me fall in love again with Arctic Monkeys, AM album specifically. Absolute masterpiece. I don't care about Muse but I must say that there was a time when I liked more bands like Libertines and Strokes than Arctic Monkeys. For example, when I was teenager, Monkeys were like Blur for me, they were ok, I liked some of their songs but Libertines were more like Oasis, their songs had some other dimension and meant much more for me. But with five great albums, I think that Monkeys proven that they are the best since Oasis. Their 5th album is great, innovative, original, modern, critically acclaimed...And Libertines only recorded 3 albums and their third is more like nostalgia trip. Altough it's ok, it is more for fans, it doesn't have some universal value. And let's not talk about Strokes and their later albums. Radiohead is in their own genre, Coldplay became shit and I don't think that they were ever that good, Arcade Fire, White Stripes...they are all brilliant but I can never get that excited about them.
So, to answer to your question, I think that AM are the best band after Oasis so that means that they are better than Muse.

I'm an Arctic Monkeys fan so that's an easy choice for me. In my opinion they haven't made a bad album. They keep evolving in sound which is interesting. A lot of people seem to have a problem with Turner's image nowadays. I don't really mind it, it was funny to see him perform with the last shadow puppets last summer, the singing and the performance was still great. To me he is one of the best songwriters out there nowadays. I don´t think they had a bad album either but when you liked their first two albums it´was a big cut after. Took me personally quite some time to enjoy the next two (actually it took after AM was released ) Turners image nowadays I can´t agree as said before. I don´t know what he is on and what he tries to be but it´s too much for me. Especially his LSP performances this year were the most annoying, weird and... I don´t know things I´ve seen in ages.

I guess I don't mind it because at least he's not boring. The sound of his music changes, his own style changes. It reminds me a bit of The Beatles who started out as a poppy act wearing suits, then evolving in sound/style/hairdo/clothes.

When I saw AM in 2014 he was constantly doing his hair, doing "sexy dances", looking moody and telling the tech guys and some of the other band members off. He was desperately trying to be the cool and smooth rocker. Saw LSP at Lowlands on tv and Alex looked...I don't know, drunk or high or something. Really out of it. Moving in a weird manner, mumbling stuff..just behaving weird in general. Guess I'm lucky that when I saw him he was "just" annoying

It´s no big deal and I would still watch a AM gig of course and he changed often over the years. Just think the elvis wanna be style is a bit too much, especially mixed with all the coke But I´m looking forward to whatever he does next. @mrs. Mustard I saw AM at Finsbury the last time and it was a great gig but... edit: I don´t know why I can´t properly add the mustard queen

I really don't know wtf is Alex is doing. Sometimes it looks so fake, sometimes it looks r'n'r and brilliant. I don't if he is genius who just doesn't give a fuck or just an idiot. For example, I think that is interview is brilliant

Muse for me. I've seen them live a few times and they put on a fantastic show. their last albums are quite shitty compared to their early stuff. Even though, I still prefer them over AM. I can't stand AM and their singer. Don't like either but I'll take Muse. Hysteria / Absolution is better than anything the Arctic Monkey's have done.100% Origin of Symmetry is fantastic as well

At its best, AM is brilliant, and as a fifth album it's a fair effort overall--certainly much better than oasis managed at that stage in their career--but a masterpiece?
In my opinion, I Want It All at track 5 is pretty so-so. And then the two ballads that follow it, Mad Sounds and No. 1 Party Anthem, are downright mediocre.
For all his songwriting flair, I think Turner has yet to prove he can put a record out that has more than five good songs on it.
---
But yeah, gimme the Arctic Monkeys over Muse.
Turner is a real talent. It's just a shame he comes across so bloody insufferable these days. Hopefully he'll sort that shit out, as he make his way through his 30s.

I'll have Muse if I have to choose, but both bands are probably among the most overrated acts of the last 15 years.
Muse were good and original until Black Holes and Revelations, then they slowly faded into pretentious, fake eclectic Queen-wannabes. And they released some truly appalling tracks on their latest three albums.
On the other hand, I must admit that Arctic Monkeys never appealed to me. I never got the hype around them. I mean, I do like a few songs... but what I hear is just another one of those garage/indie bands who populated the charts in the '00s. Most of their stuff says absolutely nothing to me, they just don't click.

He's a poser. No different to the faceless lads who turn up to Liam and Noel's gigs decked out in all the right gear. He looks the part, but there's no substance there. He's just a blank canvas smeared with the colours of others that have gone before him. I mean, fair play to him. He's earned a bit of money, he gets to play rockstar going around the world playing music for his livelihood where other people are working soul-crushing 9-5 jobs, but I tell you, as soon as Turner moves on, he's out on his fucking ear. Guitar music is not the 'in' thing now. If you're not a nostalgia act like the Stones or the Roses, or a wily old cat like our Noel, you've got to really be a talent to make it anywhere the near the mainstream, these days. And, from his reliance on co-songwriters, I'm not so sure he is.

Kasabian is very similar in most respects.

Just listened to Favourite Worst Nightmare again.
Arctic Monkeys really were/are a great band.
Can't wait for their next album.

Prefer Arctic Monkeys, first two albums are great and Humbug is underrated, SIAS is a bit boring but there are good stuffs on it too, but I hated their last album AM cos it was a sell out, a desperate attempt to infiltrate the american market, that album sounds as fake as those Alex Turner's new manners.
As for Muse, well, fuck Muse, they sound so bloated and overproduced that it makes BHN seems like a lo-fi record, and can they give back Thom Yorke's voice or what?

Love Arctic Monkeys. First two albums were great, and their last album was great too. Two dud albums in-between however. Some great B-sides too along the way. Muse aren't even on my radar. As a Monkey's mark, I have to defend the two "dud" albums. Humbug and Suck it and See are fantastic albums, when the bandwagon jumpers jumped off when they became less laddy and more darker they even more interesting for me. Humbug is the dark album, although many call it their American stoner rock album, it's still got some British In it (Crying Lighting, Secret Door and Cornerstone) plus the best B-Sides are from that period. Suck it And see I love cause it's their Indie Summer album, jangle rock with slight touches still hanging over from the Humbug period. So many great songs on that album. So disagree with you on those two. For me, one of the few British bands I love that never released a stinker.

Agree about the Humbug B-Sides.
Fright Lined Dining Room (sp?) and Catapult are great.

The past couple of hours I've been playing lots of Arctic Monkeys and I have to say Alex Turner is a great songwriter when it comes to catchy songs and riffs. I was amazed how good his riffs sound when played with guitar alone.

Great, great band.
Defo the closet band to Oasis since their pomp.

Muse up until 2006 were spectacularly good,
Songs like Citizen Erased, Stockholm Syndrome, Muscle Museum etc
But they fell off a cliff more dramatically than Oasis! There last 3/4 albums have been dreadful!
AM on the other hand have been very consistent, not reaching the highs of Muse's early albums but certainly not hitting the lows either

I see a lot of Oasis fans praising the Monkeys, but never understood why. I have heard quite a few of their stuff but all seemed rather mediocre to me, even their hits.
So that's my question for AM fans (or even just people who like the band): what make you love them ?

Their melodies and guitar solos especially on their first 2 albums seem very Noel-esque from the 90s to me.
