(yes another Verve thread...decided to make a thread to see more people's responses - this band deserves it)
Now with the reissues we got to re-experience old favourites and uncover new tunes. Hopefully 'casual' fans got the chance to discover their amazing bsides too.
So I want to know is, what are your top 10 Verve songs?
Mine would be
Lucky Man She's a Superstar Slide Away So It Goes Rather Be
Space and Time Stormy Clouds + Reprise A Man Called Sun Butterfly (acoustic) - sounds so vicious for an acoustic! Where the Geese Go
Other notable tracks... Already There History Back on my Feet Again All in the Mind I see the Door
The new Shoeshine Girl and South Pacific are also extraordinary.

My favorite band of all time. Album ranking: A Storm In Heaven (Greatest nod to 60s Psychedelic rock and one of the greatest albums ever produced) A Northern Soul (Most realistic and hard-hitting rock album of all time. True anguish is felt here.) Urban Hymns (Great blend of the darker themes of ANS and the neo-psychedelia of ASIH. Chris Potter's finest production effort, even though I'd reimagine a few of the tunes.) Forth (Not as excellent as their prime albums but a worthy return. Tracklist went through hell and ruined the album's pacing and atmosphere but if you explore the B-Sides and unreleased material there's much to appreicate from this era.) Top 10: 01 She's A Superstar (Full Version - my favorite song of all time. A shoegaze/neo-psychedelic juggernaut. Needs to played LOUD) 02 Make It Til' Monday (Album version is majestic and the acoustic mix is just heartwarming) 03 Life's An Ocean (The groove doesn't let up at all; intense sense of urgency that latches you all the way through) 04 So It Goes (Like much on ANS, very heartbreaking and powerful. Richard's vocal delivery is outstanding.) 05 Gravity Grave (One of the best bassriffs/lines ever!) 06 Blue (One of the more visceral tracks on ASIH. Gives a taste of what to expect from McCabe on ANS.) 07 No Knock On My Door (Ashcroft's greatest vocal ever recorded.) 08 The Rolling People ['94-5 Loco Studios Version] (This version is the definitive sound of the track. Potter's version is a bit too overdone in some parts, whereas the rawness of the demo truly shows what this monster is supposed to be.) 09 Come On (Similar thoughts to TRP, but the rawness comes through well this time.)
10 Stormy Clouds + Reprise (Kind of cheating, but sense they latched both onto each other at nearly every concert it deserves to be done - first track is mesmerizing, and reprise closes the album in a incredibly ethereal fashion.) Honorable Mentions: The rest of ANS and ASIH - and then
-Lucky Man -Sonnet -Velvet Morning (Severly Underrated) -Catching The Butterfly -Grey Skies -Little Gem -Life's Not A Rehearsal (The extreme psychedelic version of Life's An Ocean. Worth a listen for any Verve fan.) -A Man Called Sun -Feel -South Pacific (2016 - If Potter mixed this, bravo. Sounds really great.) -I See The Door -You and Me -Appalachian Springs -All Night Long -Chic Dub etc. etc.

Doing a top ten Verve is like doing a top ten Oasis: that is, it simply can't be done without listing fifty songs! But here are a few of my favorites: Brainstorm Interlude Bittersweet Symphony The Sun, The Sea Already There (I've come to appreciate this one a LOT lately, it's so ethereal and spacey and crams more emotions and textures into something so unusual and alien yet familiar. If that makes any sense. A brilliant song) A New Decade This Is Music History The Drugs Don't Work Weeping Willow Gravity Grave One Way to Go Life's an Ocean The Rolling People Come On Is that enough to convince y'all that these guys were a brilliant band? If not, then get out.

I'll be honest and say that I never really listened to their debut - tried a couple of years back, never really "got it". From the rest, I prefer A Northern Soul by a large margin - History, Drive You Home (personal favorite of mine), This Is Music, A New Decade, No Knock On My Door, On Your Own, So It Goes...absolutely gorgeous and without equal imo. I feel like Bittersweet Symphony is a little overrated, apart from the Stones riff (which is beautiful of course) it's not that great a song. From Urban Hymns, I prefer Sonnet, Drugs Don't Work, Velvet Morning (another personal favorite), Lucky Man, The Rolling People and Come On. ...man, I really should give ASIH another try, shouldn't I?

...man, I really should give ASIH another try, shouldn't I? Yes, you should. And don't forget the Verve EP, with its 3 singles and bsides. Good outtakes on No Come Down as well but you have those on the ANS reissue. Definitely worth mentioning the Voyager 1 live gig from between the EP and first album. Only 6 tracks (Slide Away, Gravity Grave, One way to Go, South Pacific, Already There, She's a Superstar) but does Nick McCabe every shine here. That guitar sounds like nothing else in the world. He couldn't have been very old either.

I'd say same order, however Forth is much better than I gave it credit for then. Thank goodness for Nick McCabe!

Big fan and really happy to have found the unreleased tracks from Urban Hymns on YouTube a few years back. To me these are better than 80% of Forth, but I guess their sounds had moved on by then so didn't use them.
Not a huge fan of ASIH, probably because I first heard UH, then ANS, then ASIH (and the EP). It's just so different to UH songs. I'd say UH is in my top 5 favourite albums and for a long time was #1.
Such a shame McCabe and Ashcroft couldn't get on as they produced magic together, but hey we're used to that around here...

There was a period in 2009-2010 in which I listened to Appalachian Springs every morning on my daily train commute.
I loved Forth and I still love the vibes of it in spite of the flaws.

Nick McCabe. A waste of talent seemingly doing nothing at the moment. I wanted to rebuke this but he hasn't even uploaded to his Bandcamp since last year. Meanwhile Richard serenades a half attentive crowd in Wigan with another seven minute version of "A Song For the Lovers".

Mine’s probably something like this, off the top of my head! I See The Door and Three Steps are very overlooked tunes.

So now that Oasis have finally done it, any chance we might see Verve reform and hopefully give us a new album too?
