Now bands will try to monetize over Trump like some bands did with Bush and 09/11, not this again...

Radio Listen: Mixed feelings about the first one 'Andromeda'. Very poppy... a good bassline... better than what I remember 'Hallelujah Money' sounding like. The wobbly synths are a little 'Plastic Beach' like but overall it's not instantly recognisable as a Gorillaz track.
Next track 'Saturnz Barz'. Sounds like another club record... something that could chart. Hmm. :/
Unfortunately it all sounds very chart music influenced so far.

I was worried after Hallelujah Money was released. It was trying way too hard to catch the obvious anti-Trump wave.
But I really like all of the songs. Rankings:
1. Saturnz Barz 2. Andromeda 3. We Got the Power 4. Ascension

Saturnz Bangz is filled with so many great hooks. Such a well produced song.

Love them all, but probably the best one is Andromeda. Saturnz Barz is the weakest on first listen, I hate the effect on the voice, but the video is really really good.

I think these other songs are average. Not terrible but not great, but when you compare it to the deftly crafted songs of Demon Days, it woefully pales into comparison.
Compare it to that and it just sounds like meandering instrumentals with a guest vocalist plonked on top of it. There's nothing like the rhythmic variation, melody or groove of Gorillaz at their best. And one of the best things about the songs on Demon Days were the guest appearances - for example, De La Soul's appearance on Feel Good Inc took a great song into the stratosphere. Their rap on that one seemed to intermingle and weave its way through the groove of that track and complemented Damon's vocal melody really well (likewise with Dirty Harry). That is why Demon Days is probably the best album of the 2000s because it seemed to intertwine the alternative rock genre so successfully with other genres.
The genres on these Gorillaz tracks don't mix as effectively. Rather than Damon and the guest vocalist complementing each other, it just sounds jarring as if two completely different tracks have been accidentally mixed together. Maybe it's the all important backing track which is failing here and that there's really nothing much to play with.

I like We Got the Power and Andromeda. Not too sure on Saturnz Barz, but it certainly sounds interesting. Ascension is awful though... almost unlistenable.

On first listen my favorites are Andromeda and Ascension. Saturnz Barz and We've Got the Power will need some time to sink in (or grow, if you will ) Yes, these songs don't seamlessly blend genres in the same way that Demon Days and their debut do. But I'm not too bothered by that because what I'm hearing already sounds better than a lot of Plastic Beach. And keep in mind that we've only heard low quality YouTube streams that may mask the complexity of the backing tracks. Hopefully there'll be more detail to delve into.

Plastic Beach was a major disappointment for me. And I agree, I don't need the Gorillaz to sound like Demon Days (Demon Days is all-time great album for a reason, made in a specific moment over 10 years ago...with most likely, a combination of tracks that we are likely never to see again). The songs I've heard are interesting enough for me. The combination of trip hip-hop and dream pop, is already something that I'm intrigued by, as it pushes their sound to another area. And in the end, don't we want to see artists try new things?

Andromeda and We Got The Power are both great tracks, Ascension is good, but I'm not too sure about Saturnz Barz.

Kind of suprising people like 'We Got the Power' - sounds outright terrible to me. Is it even an actual song? 'Saturnz Barz' is good besides the Popcaan 'All my life' auto tune moments. Damon's sections are great. 'Andromeda' sounds like a Demon Days outtake which is nice, and Ascension is out there for sure, love it. Like matt said they aren't amazing but not terrible (aside from 'We Got The Power' for me) - just showcases Damon's eclectic taste once again spans alot of stuff. Keep a lookout for 'Momentz' when the album leaks or releases - it features De La Soul who worked on 'Feel Good Inc.'.
