I heard/seen that he's performed with them in the past, particularly after/the late stages of the 'Britpop' era. I also read in a book (was it Pablo Hewitt's? Only read it recently but I have a bit of a bad memory!) that Noel liked the band. However, I read somewhere (think it was a 2012 interview, but I could be wrong) that he didn't like them and got confused. Anyone clear up his relationship with the band? Thank you.

No idea, but this is an excellent excuse to link everyone's favourite Wonderwall knockoff (obvious connection etc):
The riffage around the two-minute mark is the best part.

Noel liked them in 1997 that much is for sure. Opened for them on the Be Here Now tour in the UK and for Oasis in America on the SOTSOG tour. Outside of that, I haven't heard Noel mention them since explaining why Lyla (originally titled Smiler) wasn't on Heathen Chemistry since Travis had a song of similar nature or song title at the time. I think that's what Noel said in 2005ish.

He liked them enough that he performed onstage with them! Of course, this was when Travis were the Scottish Oasis, and before they invented post-Britpop.

Noel was really into them when Travis was rocking hard on a handful of early singles (a misrepresentation of the band by the record company) but once the band went gentle strumming the Noel praise vanished.

I think Noel has been friends with Fran and Dougie for a long time. Not sure what he thinks of their latest music, I didn't realise myself that they were still going until recently.

I read an interview with Fran a few years back, said he was friends with both brothers but had seen Liam more frequently who loves them (Liam would often drink with the band in the same pub). Really likeable funny guys and always come off really well in interviews - they don't come off as insincere in their modesty unlike bands like U2 (again, post-2000 persona), Coldplay and Keane. Probably because they're Scots.

Maybe "Sing". Oasis and Travis both had songs titled that in the 2001-2003 range. Nobody knows Heavy Stereo, plus Gem was already in Oasis at the time. So a non threat there.

Going on the Uncut interview in Oct 2006 where disussing the Stop The Clocks compilation Noel directly stated it was because Gem had a song of that title- can't find the original in my attic somewhere but it is transcribed at Stop Crying Your Heart Out NewsI don't know if Travis share any song titles with Oasis as I haven't heard their records since 2003's 12 Memories, but I think Noel's problem wasn't fan confusion but just being pedantic (rather like I am in general ) over having two songs of the same title by songwriters who were both in the band. Having same titled songs didn't stop Britpoppers Cast and Supergrass both scoring UK top 40 hits in 1995 with songs called 'Alright' so I can't see why having similar titles to another guitar band would by such a problem for Oasis.

In a 1997 Radio 1 interview, both Liam and Noel were bigging them up.
So yeah back then anyway.

That's because it was Cast and Supergrass. Oasis and Travis were in higher, more prominent stratosphere of relevance globally. I'm not sure why I keep trying to link the original form of Lyla and Travis' "Sing". That memory or haze of a memory is sticking with me. Maybe it's because Oasis had a song called "Sing A Song if it's worth singing" in demo form. Who knows.

Lennon2217 it would appear we both had valid points here then, as Lyla began as 'Sing (If The Song's Worth Singing)' before being scrapped due to the Travis song, presumably before being resurrected for DBTT Thanks too to jaq515 for the link.

Cannot imagine for the life of me where the "sing if the song's worth singing" bit would fit in what is now Lyla (assuming that would be a line in the song, a full line, like It's good to be free is)

Nice find Bro Montana! For a minute there I thought I was totally inventing this story. Glad to see I'm still sane............ Now if anyone could ever help track down the article from the late 90s, probably 1998/1999, where Noel mentioned he bought a double neck guitar for the upcoming SOTSOG sessions but later returned it because he said he looked like a "dickhead" using it I would be beyond estatic.

Wow, I've never heard of this before. Noel with a double neck guitar would have looked, erm, awkward but cool as fuck!

Mentions it in joking fashion for VH1 as a way of coping with Gem's abilities VH1 via Oasis Interviews Blogspot I know which one you mean though if it's the interview where he says something along the lines of 'only Jimmy Page looked cool with one' I'll dig through the archives Thread related interview where he says during the recording of SOTSOG in 1999 when asked what he was listening to whilst making the LP he replied the Travis album, which would have been 'The Man Who' given the year Melody Maker Sep 1999
