surprised no one has mentioned the killers. With some of the bands listed already, sure why not?

surprised no one has mentioned the killers. I dont think they were that great besides the first 5 tracks of Hot Fuss and the singles of their next 2 albums.

What no Stereophonics? I think there output since 2000 has been some of the best stuff they've ever done e.g. JEETP, YGGTTCB and PTP. I've voted Kasabian because that 1st album really did shake things up for me. It still sticks with me songs like e.g. L.S.F. Not a fan of the later stuff really, Empire was really shit wasn't it. Other than that, Arctic Monkeys are OK, again I only really like the first album though. I'm still waiting for a band to really blow me away like the 1st time I heard Oasis.

It's the Libertines. There's actually no competition. I don't care that they only made two records, they have hundreds of songs and devolved into several noteworthy spin-off bands. There's a reason every 00s band that debuted after the Libertines sounds like the Libertines THIS THIS THIS! As well. Prefer the second album but they're both great. I have Anthems... haven't even listened to it yet though. Gotta find the right time...

Not up to the same standard as the first two, but very few bands are still doing their best work at this age. 'You're My Waterloo' is a top-tier classic, and 'Gunga Din', 'Anthem For Doomed Youth' and 'The Milkman's Horse' come close. All-in-all a very consistent record from a band who are inconsistent in everything except the quality of the music they release

When I read the rankings of the best '00 bands usually The Strokes and Arcade Fire end up as first and second.

Solo Artists are often better than bands anyway.

Whatever The Libertines had (I could never get into them) it was probably mostly confined to the British Isles. In America we had The Strokes and they were a game changer for several years. Impacting indie bands across the land in bringing the simple garage rock sound back to the USA. They kicked the door wide open for so many bands to be heard by the masses:
Yeah Yeah Yeahs Interpol Arcade Fire Kings of Leon Arctic Monkeys Spoon TV On The Radio Band of Horses Broken Social Scene Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Clap Your Hands Say Yeah British Sea Power Franz Ferdinand Phantom Planet Hot Hot Heat Ok Go! Ambulance LTD Bright Eyes LCD Soundsystem ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead Jet Deerhunter The National The Walkmen The White Stripes The Killers The Rapture The Shins The Black Keys The Flaming Lips The Vines The Stills The Hives The Cold War Kids The Soundtrack of Our Lives
The impact of The Strokes can't be underestimated in the year 2001. It was vast. Although they haven't been too relevant since 2006, their influence looms large.

Gotta say it's an avenue I've not ventured down.

Gotta say it's an avenue I've not ventured down. Oh yeah, I'm a big fan. Everything except the last Babyshambles record is great. Even more than the Libertines you've got to venture into b-sides, Bootlegs and demos. Like the first Babyshambles record is great, really sets a mood and works as a record, but only features like 3 of their best songs from that period. You really have to dig into the b-sides for that one, and there are many. Ditto Pete's solo stuff. The albums are the place to start, but he's got hundreds of solo acoustic sessions playing loads of unreleased stuff. The Shaking and Withdrawn Megamix is my absolute favourite, but those might really be for completists only

Oh what, Arcade Fire's and Sigur Ros albums piss all over these bands efforts in this era! Okay in fairness I love a good few genuinely great albums here like Kid A, Rush Of Blood, Whatever People Say I Am albums up there along with a couple of other albums each by these bands, but I don't think anyone rivals AF and SR for their consistent brilliance for the 2000s. For major artists, I think they are the defining ones for me personally. But as these bands are not on there, and just to spite the haters and remind that they were a great act, I'll go for Coldplay. Ain't nobody but The Beatles pisses on Kid A, Ammesiac and In Rainbows But Sigur Ros needs to be on here I agree. For me, the four albums of Arcade Fire are peerless this century, and silly me, I thought Agaetis Bryjun was early 2000s - it was 1999 in fact. My brother is really into Amnesiac and Hail, and though I've always liked them, they've actually grown on me in the last year in particular so have good claim, but I still think () and and Takk are a double whammy of great albums - personally as good as the Arcade Fire ones. I love Valtari too, and Kveikur was surprisingly heavy. Hopefully they release something this year.

Another band that deserves a shout are Doves. Lost Souls is one of the best debuts ever in my opinion.
Also, Elbow - consistently delivered every album.

They must be the most underrated band of the last 20 years! Maybe my favourite of theirs. I wish Noel would do tunes a bit more minimalist like this.

It took me ages to really appreciate Amnesiac, but I listened to it while playing a game set in an industrial, dystopian world with a film noir feel and it just clicked with that atmosphere. Really stark and apocalyptic. If Agaetis Bryjun had been in the 00's instead of Valtari, that would have been game over, second best album ever. Valtari's first half is amazing, but I think a couple of songs on the second are just ambience-by-numbers. Fjogur Pianos is gorgeous though. What kind of sound do you want from their next album, back to prettiness or keeping the heaviness?
