Just yesterday, a mate gave me back a CD I lent him: it was "Urban Hymns". I asked him what he thought about it and just told me "except Bittersweet Symphony, it is meh". I asked if he really heard about Sonnet, The Drugs Don't Work, Lucky Man, Space and Time and he said : " these tunes are alright I guess, nothing particularly good". I didn't understand how he could think these tunes are not great. That's the very best of Ashcroft's songwriting . All are great songs (Sonnet and The Drugs Don't Work might be his two finest tunes; gorgeous ballads). The other day, my dad told me The La's "There She Goes" sounded like a boys band song (!!??!) and my mom said "If You're Feeling Sinister" was boring. But at the end, it's all fine if some people don't see the greatness in these tunes. At least you don't have a friend who hates everything that The Beatles have ever done. Most of the time, I find that people who hate The Beatles only despise songs like Love Me Do and Please Please Me (something I don't agree with, but I can understand where it comes from), but said friend thinks that songs like Strawberry Fields Forever and Hey Jude are shit. Seriously, I know that everyone has different tastes and all, but I will never be able to understand how anyone can dismiss songs as good as those two.

The song is alright, but then it gets love on par with far superior tunes. Strawberry Fields is like 'Roll with It' if everybody went on and on about how great it was all the time.

Ash were such a good band, really good band. I remember I heard them for the first time in my local record shop when their album "Meltdown" came out. I bought a double album and later more albums by them. and this evening I've been listening to "Free All Angels".
Good music is always there if you open your ears.

Arctic Monkeys has got to be one of the most overrated bands of british rock history, imo. I will never understand the critical acclaim some of their albums got. Don't get me wrong, I can understand why some people like them (even though I do dislike them), but the critical special favour they get, bothers me a bit. Sure, the first album was important for the kids in Britain. But now, looking back on it or hearing it for the first time nowadays, does it have a great song on it ? Actually, I do think Taylor is a decent lyricist. But melodically speaking, he is bang average at best. And when I read that he is "one of the best british songwriters since Lennon / McCartney " (??!!), it just blows my mind. The same remarks can be said about The Libertines. Woah that just hurt me reading that. You won't be going down as one of my favs on here Lubeck lol. I can name you a few great songs from their debut, A Certain Romance, I Bet you look Good on The dancefloor, Fake Tales of San Franisco, Dancing Shoes, Riot Van, When the Sun Goes Down, Mardy Bum. To say there isn't a great song on it is silly to be honest and not to get his name right even more shocking. Best debut album since Definitely Maybe imo. But I think it's their weakest album that's how good Turner and Co are. To stay as big as they are while others around them faded around them shows they've got talent, to go off and do side projects that are successful too shows that Turner knows his way around a tune and lyric. Turner's a genius, Helders a awesome drummer and they are the best british band since Oasis. Bang on.

How can anyone not like Favourite Worst Nightmare?
It's a superb album, one of the finest of the Noughties.

I've decided that there's no use doing Top 10s anymore. For the serious music lover (like yourself) there are just too many honourary mentions and considerations to squeeze into 10 choices. So now I will only do Top 12. Those extra two selections take some pressure off For instance... Top 12 Neil Young Albums (personal favourites and critical best) Rust Never Sleeps Tonight's the Night After the Goldrush On the Beach Prairie Wind Greendale Zuma Silver and Gold Freedom Harvest Moon Ragged Glory Harvest Top 12 Neil Young songs Like a Hurricane On the Beach Don't Be Denied Walk like a Giant All of those Dreams Goin' Back Pocahontas Birds Speaking Out Lookin for a Love Peaceful Valley Boulevard I'm the Ocean ...and countless others

I won't make my own top 12-lists, but I'll say this: Zuma is the best album, and the best song is Thrasher (at least today). Glad to see you mentioning Speakin' Out, feels like one of those hidden gems that you can't really explain why it's so good, but it just has that "Neil Youngish" laid back vibe which you can't deny.

New single from the new Ryan Adams album which is officially out in February (and which is fuckin' great).
Strong '80s feels again in this one, a bit like "Springsteen meets The Smiths".

Listening to quite a bit of Elliott Smith these days, in particular songs I'm not familiar with or other versions of the songs I know (acoustic, demos, live).
The guy was a great raw talent. I'm surprised a lot of his demos/live versions are actually better than the actual ones. Especially thinking of this brilliant acoustic rendition of "Baby Britain".
The guy had great taste in music, aswell. Covered multiple Beatles songs, Supersonic (apparently, he did love Oasis) and pop gems (Care of Cell 44 , Thirteen, Waterloo Sunset).
I know that quite some of you already know a bit of him but don't hesitate to look deeper into his catalogue. If you're a fan of The Beatles, Big Star or Nick Drake, you might like mister Smith.
Some live versions:
