One consideration that all artists should take into account when recording an album is the possibility that the said album might be a listener's first exposure to the band. Just as you make sure you look nice and presentable for a job interview to make good first impressions, a band should make sure that whatever record they're creating is strong enough that the listener would want more.

Not heard A Storm In Heaven yet either, but as I believe mystoryisgory once said it was better than (What's The Story) Morning Glory? (obviously bullshit, but still...), I'll be sure to give that one a listen. Another marvelous debut produced by John Leckie.

I fuckin' love Slide Away. That song just melts away whatever pitiful excuse of an existence we have by the end of it.

On a rainy day listening to this is so strange... I feel cheerful and sad at the same time.

The best 5/6 songs of his new album, A Lady of A Certain Age, Our Mutual Friend, Sweden, Generation Sex, If..., Tonight We Fly, Songs of Love, Perfect Lovesong and after Neil could pick whatever, that'll do me.

The Strokes released 3 new songs today. At first Oblivius sounded a bit weird but couple of listenings later it sounds really good actually. Classic Strokes all of those songs.

The music critic in me says that U2's masterpieces are The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby. The hipster in me says that they're War, Zooropa, and Pop.It's amazing to think that they felt like they didn't finish what they ended up releasing, and that there was more that they felt they could've done. Kind of makes you wonder what a "finished" Pop would've sounded like in some ways, considering how good it sounds as it is. Curious to know, what are your favorite tracks from it?

Kind of makes you wonder what a "finished" Pop would've sounded like in some ways, considering how good it sounds as it is. Curious to know, what are your favorite tracks from it? I really like every song on there, barring Last Night on Earth (which is ok, but probably the only one that required a bit more work), but my top three would probably be Discothèque, Gone, and Mofo. It's also an interesting point that, while I haven't heard all of the reworked versions of the Pop tracks, most of the time when U2 revisited songs from that era, they either tried to make them sound like something from All That You Can't Leave Behind, or they didn't change them that much. Makes me think that the version of Pop that we got is as close to U2's original vision as we'll ever get!

Pop may be my favourite U2 album, sort of their SOTSOG, so many great songs on it: Wake Up Dead Man, Gone, Mofo, Do You Feel Loved, Discotheque, Staring At Sun, If God..., Please,
That bass on Do You Feel Loved is awesome.

Mofo is awesome, alone with Gone, Do You Feel Loved...etc.
But on Zooropa though....

I feel like I should listen to Pop now. Maybe I'll do that this weekend. I've only heard it once about 15 years ago.

MGMT should have been a lot better band than what they became. Agree. Oracular Spectacular was awesome, Congratulations was underwhelming and I don't even want to try to remember their last one, which was simply awful

The band South should have also been a lot better than what they became. Mentored by Ian Brown. Produced by James Lavelle. That debut had all the makings of a potential classic. Misfire! At least "Pain The Silence" is the best song The Stone Roses never wrote.

I'm pretty sure I posted a top ten a while ago - but I don't fancy finding it or contradicting myself, so here's ten of my favourites off the top of my head if you fancy trying some LP1's (Excluding stuff you'll have definitely heard like DM, The Stone Roses, or - your favourite, I'm sure - Parachutes): Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - Aphex Twin Placebo - Placebo xx - The XX A Mouthful - The Do Music has the Right to Children - Boards of Canada Funeral - Arcade Fire (You might have heard this one?) Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters - The Twilight Sad Inculabula - Autechre I Thought I Was an Alien - Soko In Colour - Jamie XX And throw in the masterpiece that is A Storm in Heaven if you haven't got on that yet... Got the Arcade Fire one but haven't listened yet. Might give the Twilight Sad one a go, as I'm seeing The Cure in November, and they're on as support. Not heard A Storm In Heaven yet either, but as I believe mystoryisgory once said it was better than (What's The Story) Morning Glory? (obviously bullshit, but still...), I'll be sure to give that one a listen. Out of interest, how would Definitely Maybe and The Stone Roses fare if you were to do another top 10 list now? Top of the tree, or languishing somewhere in the middle? EDIT: Just had a debut album on before actually - Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True, to be exact. So I'm not messing about here. 'This ain't no disco, man. This ain't no foolin' around!' And, as a result, in a couple of months time, I shall you bestow upon you the precisely-ordered list to end all precisely-ordered lists... Unfortunately though, I was out walking when I attempted to listen to it, and because some of the songs were only there via the Cloud, or some shit like that, as soon as I lost wifi, it cut the whole thing off. Had to put Kid A on instead. Bummer. Forget all that pretentious bleep-bloop shite, get on Funeral! Definitely Maybe and The Stone Roses, particularly the latter, would be very high up the list. For me, the only real challengers are SAW85-92, Funeral, and Parachutes. It'd probably look something like this: 1. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses 2. Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - Aphex Twin 3. Definitely Maybe - Oasis 4. Funeral - Arcade Fire 5. Parachutes - Coldplay 6. A Storm in Heaven - Verve 7. xx - The XX 8. Music Has the Right to Children - Boards of Canada 9. Placebo - Placebo 10. Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters - The Twilight Sad Put Half the World Away, Listen Up, and Whatever on Definitely Maybe, though, and it'd leap to the top.

I love almost everything about "The Velvet Underground & Nico", but I somehow can't really get used to Nico's singing because of her broad german accent. I'm wondering if that is because I am german myself or if it's despite me being german.

Probably despite- her vocal style is quite an acquired taste to my ears, and her partial deafness did not help her, especially with unsympathetic bandmates who resented her being foisted on them by Andy Warhol for his 'Exploding Plastic Inevitable' multimedia events.

U2's Beautiful Day, though very clearly their death knell, the point when U2 lost all of their ambition and stopped trying to confound and started trying to write "classics" again, still sounds amazingly uplifting and endlessly optimistic. If only the rest of All That You Can't Leave Behind, or their subsequent albums, had been this good!
Here's a list of the ten post-Pop songs that are actually worth your time:
Beautiful Day Stuck in a Moment... Walk On City of Blinding Lights No Line on the Horizon Magnificent Moment of Surrender Fez-Being Born Invisible Sleep Like a Baby Tonight
