OK, I admit you've called my bluff a bit there. I probably haven't even heard 10 debut albums. You see, a lot of the sixties and early 70s acts I love so, had to fill their early albums with covers and knock-off bits of filler to meet the constant demand for new music their record companies put on them, so I don't often bother with debuts. As I said the other day, a deceptively narrow music taste... And it's kicked me out into the middle of town with my knackers out, there. If you're still on here in a few months time, I'll get back to you with my list. I know that sounds absurd, but I can't miss out on an opportunity for a spot of precisely-ordered listing this good...

She's coming over, We'll go out walking, Make a call on the way.
She's in the phone booth now, I'm looking in. There comes a smile on her face.
There's still some of the same stuff we got yesterday. There's still some of the same stuff we got yesterday, Yeah.
"It's a shame about Ray" is still great and such a timeless album.

Here's a small selection of debut albums that can be called "better" than The Stone Roses:
Please Please Me The Velvet Underground & Nico The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn The Doors Are You Experienced Music From Big Pink Five Leaves Left Led Zeppelin The Ramones Marquee Moon Pink Flag Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols Unknown Pleasures Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables Damaged The Smiths Psychocandy Surfer Rosa The La's Fugazi Slanted and Enchanted Definitely Maybe Is This It Funeral Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not
I Love The Stone Roses but there were so many amazing debut albums. It's not even close in my opinion

No way is Please Please Me better than The Stone Roses. And the production on The Smiths is baws. Makes tunes like Miserable Lie and (in my opinion, at least) Reel Around the Fountain a real slog to get through.

Evan Dando's one true masterpiece- how he and Juliana Hatfield didn't end up together. I would have put money on it in 1992/93.....

Mostly just use it for the singles and b-sides that you can't get anywhere else, though tbh - quite like Still Ill and You've Got Everything Now and What Difference Does It Make as they are on The Smiths.

I'm pretty sure I posted a top ten a while ago - but I don't fancy finding it or contradicting myself, so here's ten of my favourites off the top of my head if you fancy trying some LP1's (Excluding stuff you'll have definitely heard like DM, The Stone Roses, or - your favourite, I'm sure - Parachutes): Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - Aphex Twin Placebo - Placebo xx - The XX A Mouthful - The Do Music has the Right to Children - Boards of Canada Funeral - Arcade Fire (You might have heard this one?) Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters - The Twilight Sad Inculabula - Autechre I Thought I Was an Alien - Soko In Colour - Jamie XX And throw in the masterpiece that is A Storm in Heaven if you haven't got on that yet...

I don't like Reel Around the Fountain that much aswell but I usually focus on the songs I like. You've Got Everything Now, Still Ill and What Difference Does It Make? are among my favorite Smiths songs and that's why it's the one I listen to the most. You could say that Please Please Me was more influential and therefore better than The Stone Roses. But you don't have to.

I think it's more important to keep in mind that an album like Are You Experienced? or The Velvet Underground & Nico were debut albums aswell.
Hendrix didn't need ten albums to "develop his sound". He just released an incredible album that changed rock music forever

Which one do you prefer? Still Ill from "The Smiths" (with the guitar intro) or from "Hatful of Hollow" (with harmonica played by Johnny)? Johnny played Still Ill when I saw him in 2014 for encore and I thought I was going to loose myself when he came on stage with a rose in his mouth.

Got the Arcade Fire one but haven't listened yet. Might give the Twilight Sad one a go, as I'm seeing The Cure in November, and they're on as support. Not heard A Storm In Heaven yet either, but as I believe mystoryisgory once said it was better than (What's The Story) Morning Glory? (obviously bullshit, but still...), I'll be sure to give that one a listen. Out of interest, how would Definitely Maybe and The Stone Roses fare if you were to do another top 10 list now? Top of the tree, or languishing somewhere in the middle? EDIT: Just had a debut album on before actually - Elvis Costello's My Aim Is True, to be exact. So I'm not messing about here. 'This ain't no disco, man. This ain't no foolin' around!' And, as a result, in a couple of months time, I shall you bestow upon you the precisely-ordered list to end all precisely-ordered lists... Unfortunately though, I was out walking when I attempted to listen to it, and because some of the songs were only there via the Cloud, or some shit like that, as soon as I lost wifi, it cut the whole thing off. Had to put Kid A on instead. Bummer.

MGMT should have been a lot better band than what they became. it's all on the lyrics of Time To Pretend. They didnt liked that and moved on... For the worse.

The music critic in me says that U2's masterpieces are The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby.
The hipster in me says that they're War, Zooropa, and Pop.

Now that I've seen the Buzzcocks, my live performance 'bucket list' artists are Paul Weller, Richard Ashcroft, Morrissey and/or Marr. And Smashing Pumpkins, though we'll see what sort of thing they're up to. I am always awed by how much (great) music they released in 1995-96: a double album of 28 tracks, 5 singles with 6 b sides each, and plenty of outtakes and live performances.
