Ahh I've been playing some Iron Maiden CDs for the past two days. Maiden were the first band I ever got into and the reason I got obsessed with music. I put Rock in Rio on just yesterday and after all these years it still blows me away! I remember listening to it as a kid right after it's release and thinking already back then that it was really immense. It's still in my top 3 favourite albums of all time, Dickinson was just unbelievable at that time and the setlist is as good as it can possibly get! Yesterday I bought the original Maiden England VHS+CD set from 1988 which was the last missing piece of my Maiden collection. It should arrive in a day or two - I can't wait! You going to see them on this tour? I'm going to the show in Sydney (at a place that should be really called 'We can't make up our mind what to call this place' arena) next Friday (4/5 or 5/4) A bit of a late reply but oh well! I've seen Maiden live three times: on AMOLAD tour, Somewhere Back in Time tour & Maiden Englnd tour. The first one was a bit tough as they played the album in full but the other two were as good as one could possibly imagine. But during Maiden England gig I realised that I the stadium gigs are in general not exactly my thing. I could also hear that the band is slowly passing it's highest peak performance-wise, especially Nicko and Bruce. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the show! I just want to have the memories being on their gigs where they've absolutely nailed it and were on form. I've heard 7th Son, Evil That Men Do, Aces High, Fear of the Dark, Moonchild, all the other classics live. There's nothing left for me to achieve with Maiden. In short: nope, not going to see them live this time and that's ok. Did you enjoy the show? How did the new songs work out live? Any suprises on the setlist? I haven't been following their tour but it's interesting to hear what they're up to! Dickinson's releasing a solo album and an autobiography next year - I'm totally looking forward to that!

His performance at Jools Holland caught my eyes a while ago and this acoustic session as well.

SUBBACULTCHA There is something about this song. This is a song about something there.
We did the clubs what ass, I was hoping to have her in the sack. I was looking handsome, She was looking like an erotic vulture. I was all dressed in black, She was all dressed up in black. Everything was fine down here, What you call it here? Call it what you will here, Way down in this subbacultcha.
Her warm white belly in the life I'd lived had seen nothing finer, She shakes and she moves me or something, She's like jellyroll, like sculpture. I was wearing eyeliner, She was wearing eyeliner. It was so good down here, Saving for my scrapbook here, Way down down down in this subbacultcha.
Now we live on the sea and relax and ride the tack, Drug running on this Panamanian schooner. She walks the deck in a black dress, And me I dress up in black. And we listen to the sea and look at the sky in a poetic kind of way, What you call it when you look at the sky in a poetic kind of way, You know when you grope for luna.
I'm pretty blasé about lyrics but I've always loved the imagery in this song.

Just came back from Sydney (gave you Brisbane's date, sorry), Blood Brothers was a shock to me (I had thought that had gone the way of The Wicker Man). For me in order these were the highlights: -Bruce saying anyone born in 1982/1983 (as there were older than me, you probably are as I'm 1986) probably had Children Of The Damned as their conception song -finding out that Tears of a Clown is about the late, great Robin Williams -The woah-oh-oh's by the crowd in the Red and The Black -Eddie finally meeting his match in The Book of Souls (The Mayan sacrifice way, while he was still on his feet) -the 'falling in Sydney harbour when it's dark' line in Fear of The dark. -The 'we're all one family' speech Bruce gave before Blood Brothers.

Went to see Mark Lanegan last night ("An Evening with Mark Lanegan"). I saw him with his band 4 years ago, but this time was only with guitarist, bass player and Duke Garwood as a special guest. Seated in the smallest hall of the venue (about 500 people). Very special and it was fantastic. What a voice is that!
Only thing I really hated last night was, that I had to stand up everytime people had to pass my seat. And people bring their drinks to the seat wasn't a good idea either as the sound of smashing glasses ruined the music.

When will Gorillaz release a song about being unhappy and having sunshine in a bag? Clint Eastwood does not count.

I love the orchestra swell in the opening of Yes, and the breakdown before the chorus. What a tune that is...

Listening to The Who, especially live performances, is so incredibly satisfying.
Got the BBC Sessions on now, but The Who Live at Leeds is definitely my favourite live album ever.

Everybody in the world needs to see this!
Edit: Seriously I want a band like this again. Bands today are so boring and pretentious
