28 years ago today Oasis played the first night of two at Main Road. Such great concerts those two.

Currently watching the first night. My favourite oasis gigs. If I could go back in time to see a gig it would be them! Just love everything about them.

In honor of the Maine Road gigs' anniversaries. I thought it'd be cool/entertaining to post some articles that aren't necessarily about the gigs, but topics that surrounded the gigs. First article is a piece about a police investigation into Noel's comments about him stealing car radios (Which now gives the comments before Some Might Say from the first some context) and the second article about the unfortunate, slightly entertaining, and scathing report about the lack of police as people lined up to enter Maine Road. Pre-teen gangs, ticket thieves, and bottle throwers galore as some people missed half of the Oasis set trying to get in. Bonus material about this Andy Bell fella from Ride

29 years ago today it was confirmed that Tony McCaroll was sacked from Oasis. Alan White and Chris Sharrock were both great. Starky is a fine drummer but never liked his style. Didn’t care much for Tony, but he served his purpose.

Zak couldn't play them either.

Yeah, I agree with you there, Tony was the right drummer for Definitely Maybe but I think that's it and I don't think he could've played on any of Oasis's albums after that.

24 years ago today Oasis appeared on Letterman and played I Can See A Liar. God knows why they chose such a crap song to play live on that show.

24 years ago today Oasis appeared on Letterman and played I Can See A Liar. God knows why they chose such a crap song to play live on that show. We discussed this on the SOTSOG appreciation tread, page 9. I could never understand why they didn’t play GLIO, but I think it is to do with song length, these TV shows want quick snappy songs. GLIO is a bit long with the extended outro. The album version is 4:39 and the version on familiar to millions is 5:32 both versions are too long for TV unless for a specific music TV show such as Jools Holland or Nulle Part Ailleurs. They were limited for Liam sung songs that would be right for the show. The other single was WFL but again it was too long.

I don't know if this has ever been discussed but Noel seemed to name albums / shows / tours after unreleased or hidden songs.
E.g. Definitely Maybe was one of the songs in his original notebook. Standing on the Edge of the Noise was the name of the warmup gig for the DOYS tour. Stop the Clocks was obviously named after the song. Sitting Here in Silence was the gig that was recorded for the STC acoustic tour.
All of this got me thinking, will we ever hear the songs that may or may not have inspired other albums / shows like Familiar to Millions, The Ear Has no Memory, etc?

Yeah, I know there's a thread for the Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants album but I just thought that I would mention that here as I read it on Stop Crying Your Heart Out last night. It's a shame that TV shows want short songs when artists play live on their show as there's much better songs from that era which Oasis could've played on Letterman.

I’m not really sure what the options were really around that time for songs to play that would have been suitable for an American TV show audience who aren’t necessarily fans of the band. In the SOTSOG they had no immediate popular sounding songs that would have fitted the bill. Maybe GLIO but it’s just a bit long, I’m not sure how they could have cut it down, perhaps Gem’s solo which would have been a shame as I liked that. In the past the band shortened LBL and WDIAGW for TV shows

But you're right that American TV audiences aren't necessarily fans of the band. Songs like Gas Panic and Roll It Over I guess would be far too long for an American TV audience.

It’s a big promotional opportunity those American TV shows like jimmy Fallon etc. To be fair I think some bands are more clinical about these promotional things than oasis ie U2 and Coldplay etc. they never make a mistake or miss an opportunity.

Mind you, Liam hasn't chose some bad songs since going solo so I guess that's a bonus.

Imagine writing this stunning and poignant song three decades into your career, and then releasing it as a mere bonus track tacked onto a Best Of compilation.
Perhaps my favourite song of Noel’s solo career… a bonus track! What an incredible back catalogue. Best song writer of a generation.
