What are songs or song parts that you think other artists genuinely made them their own?
What are bland rip offs that you find blasphemic in comparison to their originals?

I hate this Mc Donalds advert. It ruined Gutterballs for me.

There's some Kid Rock song that basically features him singing over Sweet Home Alabama. I don't get the point of that, especially releasing it as a single.
That said, I don't even like the original Sweet Home Alabama.
I think Noel taking Get It On and turning it into C&A was a terrific rip off because it takes part of the song (albeit a signature part - even though that type of riff was so Chuck Berry to begin with) and turns it into a completely different and IMO far better song.

Don't Look Back in Anger.
That song builds on Imagine's piano intro, and the melody from All the Young Dudes, especially seen in the final chorus, to become one of the best Oasis songs and one of the best rock anthems of the last 25 years.

The best Brown Sugar rip off, of course... Check out The Specials' "Little Bitch" from 1979 self titled album, it must have also influenced Bohemian Like You.

Yes, especial the general instrumentation. Speaking of the Dandy Warhols ... they are one of my favourites. But I truly despise this song. It's not even a Lou Reed rip off, like the title would suggest. It's Patti Smith's Gloria!

Then again, there's a whole genre (Stoner Rock) dedicated to Keith Richard's guitar playing.

She's Electric. Manages to rip off a number of songs, without sounding like a patchwork of different ideas.
As someone else said, Cigarettes & Alcohol - Get It Out was a signature 'glam rock' tune and trademark bit of Bolan boogie, Noel managed to take it and create one of the signature songs of the nineties.

Kasabian's Thick as Thieves does an imitation of People Are Strange by The Doors- They have even included this in their live sets by mashing the two songs together, not that there's alot of difference to spot IMO! Good shout theyknowwhatimean re: T-Rex & Cigarettes & Alcohol, although Bolan himself was "inspired" by the main riff from Chuck Berry's "Little Queenie", even quoting the lyrics in 'Get It On" fade out- and meanwhile I'm still thinking....

Even though I have known both songs all my life, until I've read about it, I'd never heard the similarities between the Kink's "All day and all of the night" and the Doors' "Hello, I love you". Once it is pointed out, you just cannot not hear it.

Baba 'O Reilly and that One Direction song. How dare they take something off the Who and stick it on their awful poppy manufactured shit?

Baba 'O Reilly and that One Direction song. How dare they take something off the Who and stick it on their awful poppy manufactured shit? Didn't they do the same with Should I Stay or Should I Go? IIRC Twitter was abuzz at one point with hormonal Directioners screeching about "who the F**k are The Clash" and "1D are soooooo much betta innit!"

Was thinking they had another one, but couldn't remember which one. I remember that. It was the same with The Who "Who the fuck calls their band The Who anyway, fucking old c*nts pfff"

Oh yeah, Coldplay aren't exactly original either. Viva La Vida has the melody line of a Satriani song. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall of course has the I Go To Rio bit, which I instantly recognized when I first heard it and which it still reminds me of and which I cannot unhear and the main riff of Talk was taken from a Kraftwerk song.

Sure same chord progression, but different tempo and the accentuation is different too. same goes for vocals and melody.

The fun thing about it is, that it actually sounds more like The Masterplan.
