Quick 2016 music thoughts since we are half way through the year. haven't had a change to post as much as I like. Here are some of my favorite albums.
1.
Anderson .Paak - Malibu - great r&b record, but its really sui generis album genre wise. Great great songwriting. Dude sings, raps, plays drums among other things. Respect.
Check out: The Season | Carry Me, Heart Don't Stand a Chance, Without You (feat. Rapsody)
2.
Whitney - Light Upon the Lake - Y'all know I love Smith Westerns, so naturally I adore this. Great, compact hooky material. No weak songs on this record.
Check out: No Woman, Golden Years, No Matter Where We Go, or The Falls.
3.
Kanye West - The Life of Pablo - more consistent and playable than Yeezus although it doesn't reach that album's artistic highs. Plays like a mixtape of all his sounds. Maybe people (maybe I mean critics) are tired of him, but I really like this record.
Check out: Ultralight Beam, Real Friends, 30 Hours
4.
KING - We are KING - smooth, soulful neo R&B. Reminds me of Badu with a subtle colorful Prince grooves. Probably the most underrated and under appreciated album of the year.
Check out: The Right One, The Greatest, Hey (Extended Mix)
5.
Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered. - dude just continues to prove that he is without the best hiphop/rap artist right now. Impactful and perspective changing lyrics, tasteful musicianship. This just being b-sides just proves that he's on one of those insane songwriting rolls. Ala Noel in 1993-1995.
Check out: untitled 05 l 09.21.2014., untitled 06 l 06.30.2014., untitled 03 l 05.28.2013.
6.
Cullen Omori - New Misery - Heavy, hazy, but always melodic. Like I said before I loved Smith Westerns, and Cullen really continues where that band was gonna go here. He miss's Max's guitar hooks, but as a songwriting the dude just knows how to arrange a hooky trad rock song like few mid 20 year old can.
Check out: Two Kinds, Hey Girl, Cinnamon,
7.
Beyonce - Lemonade - I wouldn't really consider myself a Beyonce fan, although I did buy DC's Survivor as a 9 y/o in 2001. She just rips Jay a new one on here, whether its real or not. The songwriting is emotional potent, the production reaches beyond standard top 40 tropes in a lot of the tracks. The emotional impact on this record is amazing, its so much more fierce than something like Adele. The cuts sting and the bruise are still
feeltender. You don't have to like her, or what she stands for, but you can't deny she has talent as a performer and a singer.
Check out: All Night, Freedom (Ft. Kendrick Lamar), Don't Hurt Yourself (Ft. Jack White).
8.
HINDS - Leave Me Alone - These chicks just know how to rock out and have a good time. Who doesn't like that? Some of the best and most charming songs of the year are on year. Shambolic garage rock that will make your cheap beer and cigs taste better.
Check out: Chili Town, Fat Calmed Kiddos, Warts, San Diego, Castigadas En El Granero
9.
Mothers - When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired - wonderfully arranged folk/rock. Fans of early Cat Power and Velvet Underground should check them out. Gorgeously restrained.
Check out: Lockjaw, Copper Mines
10.
Night Beats - Who Sold My Generation - loud reverby garage rock that has a tinge of exotic vibes.
Check out: No Cops, Porque Mañana
Random thoughts:
Radiohead - haven't really spent that much time with it to totally give it a honest and firm fair shake, but seemed about what I expected from them. After about 10-15 listens it seems like its got one or two legit great Radiohead songs on there, some very good ones, but mostly just typical nice sounding Radiohead. Hate to say this, but they don't really interest me anymore and I'd totally be cool if this was their last record.
Drake's new record is boring, mediocre, and tastelessly grey.
M83's new record is good but kinda disappointing given the wait. Wish more groups had the audacity to go full cheesy like he does on Go!
New Primal Scream has some of their best songs of this decade. Where the Light Gets In & Trippin' on Your Love are really enjoyable .
Chance the rapper's new record is a little too extra, but you can tell he is a good dude and the record as a great vibe, probably my most overrated of the year.
Smaller records to check out: Charlie Hilton - Palana, Charles Bradley - Changes, beverly - the blue swell,
The Stone Roses - The first one was pretty mediocre and sounded kinda hollow to me. This new one, Beautiful Thing at least has a smooth, feathery feel to it. It shows a lot of promise, the key is just not over producing and compressing everything. One of the great things about the Roses is that they sounded colorfully cryptic on that first record, I don't want their instruments smooched then magnified, John, Reni and Mani are too good at playing for that.
HOLY SHIT NEW AVALANCHES MUSIC! I'm crying tears of joy. Since I Left You is literally perfect and no one else can do what these dude's do. There's sampling and production sensibilities aren't matech. Dj Shadow, not Aphex Twin, Kanye, Dilla, are all greats in their own ways with synths, beats, and sampling, but The Avalanches are like the Beach Boy's and Beatles of plunderphonics. They just transcend a vibe, or aesthetic and take you on a experience.
