I like all the singles and am really enjoying:
We Don't Deserve Love Put Your Money On Me
The rest are just okay. Granted what I listed + the singles are more than half the album. So all in all, a good album.

Seems like tonnes of good praise for this band, where is a good place to start for a newcomer? Straight in with the debut?

Yes, start with Funeral. Enjoy ! Thanks mate, that's my work playlist sorted for the week then! Hope it lives up to the hype from you guys. I was making the same journey a couple of weeks ago. I loved the songs Tunnels and We Exist, and I thought it was the right time (with an upcoming album) to dive into their discography to see if I would fall in love with any more songs of theirs. Sadly that wasn't the case for me, but that's just how it is sometimes. Every band is not for you, no matter the critical acclaim. Hopefully you'll enjoy them more than I did!

That's a shame but maybe another time it will sink in. I listened to Achtung Baby this week for the first time in years and loved every minute, I once actually had a fight over me telling my friend how shit it was..!

This album has a strong beginning and killer ending run of tunes. Unfortunately the middle is bogged down severely and feels incomplete. It's missing one banger in the middle.

Achtung Baby is yet to sink in for me, as is the case for most post 80's U2 stuff (like that would be a unique position, I know). I even think One is just a "fine" song, which may be the ultimate proof that I am beyond saving regarding this issue

I like Flashbulb Eyes too, but you don't want an album based around short, interlude-ish tracks like that. Maybe they've taken inspiration from Bowie's Low? The first side of that album is entirely made up of songs only a couple of minutes long that come in, are weird, and then fade out again. Paul Weller started the decade off with an album called Wake Up the Nation that went to great lengths to try and ape what Bowie (and Eno) did with that record. Knowing that Arcade Fire are also big Bowie fans, and how they intended to make an album of songs with shorter runtimes, before they ended up making Reflektor, I could see them going down a similar route. Are the tunes at least varied, sonically and stylistically? Yes they are, which is possibly the album's saving grace for the middle section. Peter Pan is a fun and catchy love song over a harsh beat with some twinkling pianos, Chemistry is a another almost novelty song based around a jazz/rock groove (it is quite fun though, Arcade Fire have never been less sombre), while Infinite Content starts off as a crazy rock song and turns into languid country halfway through. It's not that any of these are bad songs - they just ultimately feel inconsequential, like throwaway tracks or leftover demos that would work great as fun interludes if surrounded by more fleshed out, and dare I say "proper" songs. When you get four of them in a row, it feels like you're listening to a wacky b-sides collection. And it's not like Everything Now is a bad album - it starts and ends fantastically with great songs and typical Arcade Fire bombast. Like Hail to Thief, if another band had done it, I'd be singing it's praises - but I really expect a lot more from Arcade Fire, especially after four years of waiting.

I've never met a person that didn't like Funeral. The Suburbs is always a 50/50 with people.

I'd just like to add that all of Arcade Fire's albums are basically flawless, apart from Reflektor which was merely exceptional.

The CD leak makes the last track flow back into the first track nicely. Just wish it was also at least 2 minutes long. I hate 40 second tracks on albums. Waste of space and time.

I have to agree. I wouldn't take any tune off that album - I initially thought it was their best album when I got it, and I still think that seven years later. I don't think it is sacrilege to say 'this album is better than Funeral' because for it genuinely is better than that album.

If you got in during the 2004-2005 days Funeral is gonn be your album. The Suburbs brought in a new legion of fans. Neon Bible trimmed the fat of fandom.

I think it might have taken me till tonight to realise that this is one of the saddest songs ever written:

part of me has been tempted to cancel my pre-order based on all the reviews- personal and otherwise. but i guess i'll just stick it out. not expecting much really from the middle of the album, that's for sure.
