Good lord is there a reason I actually think this song is decent after listening to the live version? Sure the majority of the tunes or mush to my ears, but I think Stargate way overproduced this album. They were really trying to polish a turd with more turd. Also, Jonny's guitar sounds really great. It's the most Coldplay-sounding song on the album, but it's happier and brighter. I quite like it. The title, and what it represents in the lyrics, is phenomenal, and speaking of the lyrics, they're pretty straight-forward and honest. I like that a lot, even if it isn't the Coldplay of old that would've come up with poignant metaphors in its place. It's just a shame that the album version is overproduced, because, like you said, Jonny's guitar is immense and great, and just fills the soundscape with a wonderful guitar tone. To me, THIS represents what they should be putting out nowadays. It's fresh, sort of experimental (the drums), but sounds like Coldplay. Fuck XMTS and HFTW.

I haven't listened to it yet, since Chris Martin is one of them when it comes to music on the Internet, but all I had to was read the lyrics to get a sense of what I was probably going to take in when I do get a chance to listen to it, and yea, horrible.

I'm a bit late to the discussion, but I've just seen the 'adventure of a lifetime' music video. Fuck me, what happened to Coldplay? Not only Disney style dancing apes, but crappy product placement too. 'Parachutes' and 'AROBTTH' are two of my all time favourite albums, filled with atmospheric, psychedelic and emotional songs. I haven't bothered listening to anything past X&Y, as it all sounds the same generic, happy, cash-grabbing, generic pop. This new shit is on another level. I've only heard this one new song, as I cant bring myself to listen to the whole album. What's the general consensus here on the new album?

Pretty much as I thought . Sometimes I wish Coldplay hadn't become so popular, or broke America. They might have carried on producing decent music. Nice avatar by the way batfink30(!)

It shows the state of todays recording industry that people are literally falling over themselves to give this a good review. I thought that might happen but not to this degree.

It would have been nice for Coldplay to mature in their work and sound and take a step back from generic pop. After watching that dancing ape video, it's like they've gone in the opposite direction to cater to 14 year old's. What was the 'Ghost Stories' album like? From the artwork it looks like its a bit more dark and moody, but is it just the same old new Coldplay?

GS had 1 poppy song but the rest was quite dark and more depressing, it didn't sell very well and I think they were a bit slated for it. The new one sounds like it trys to cater to every genre with a terrible poppy production, some R&B (not joking) songs and general bland pop stuff.

I am getting a great chuckle reading the fans reviews on Coldplaying.com. Are these people fucking serious? They gotta be newer fans who jumped on between Viva and Mylo.

Like I said before, I think it's a good song (even though I hated it at first). Lyrics might be stale in places, but it also features some good lyrics. It's that piano and melody that gets me. Chorus is alright too.

I have no doubt that Coldplay will always be a great live band, the two times I saw them they were fantastic (granted Elbow did show them up as an opener at one of the those gigs), but on record and as artists they've lost themselves up Chris Martin's ass.

I like Everglow, and you can tell it really means something to Chris, which is always a bonus and improves the performance.

It's a lovely piano part and melody and the live version is much better than the almost ruined album version. In general though, it's built around the riff and doesn't really go anywhere, almost reminds me of a Liam song which doesn't go anywhere. The riff and general melody is great, listened to it for a few days and quite enjoyed it then got bored with it. God knows why but it reminds me of Wigwam.

I've heard the album now, I have to say that there are some good songs on it like A Head Full of Dreams, Birds, Everglow, Adventure of a Lifetime, Up&Upand, but the rest...
The album sounds like Mylo Xyloto, it's overproduced but with less glitter, but also it doesn't have the great and powerfull songs that MX has.
Overall it's a bland and souless album, a polished turd, shit songs clouded with great production values.

Coldplay really do know how to close an album. Even on this latest album, which is probably my least favorite from them so far, Up&Up is still a damn good closer. Really emotional, and has the benefit of 2 very uplifting guitar solos from Jonny and Noel

Gave this a another go and now I'm listening to Yes off of Viva La Vida, and its just undeniable to my ears that they're just hollow now. Like why listen to this new stuff when you listen to songs like that? They just aren't on top of their game anymore in terms of quality songwriting and their indulgent/kitsch production values don't have a lot of replay value. I'll take the 3 legit great albums they have, that isn't too shabby. Can't really hate on them for continuing to do this (imagine it pays de billz), but their musical legacy is boarding on being damaged. I'd say it already has with their constant desperate ploys for attention.

I'll admit it, I quite like Adventure of a Lifetime and Everglow. The latter one is a little schmaltzy in some areas, but the former is a solid dance track that doesn't stray from the Coldplay formula too much. In all reality, neither of those two do, they're just Coldplay songs dressed up in different clothes, really. On the other hand, I still cannot like HFTW for the life of me...

I bought it the day it came out and didn't like it at first but it grows on you after a few plays. Like 'Amazing Day', really uplifting song! I'd give it 7.5/10. Their music now is quite poppy but Chris Martin still knows how to write a good tune and I've still got huge respect for him as a songwriter. Thought Mylo Xyloto was immense, my favourite Coldplay album by far. HFOD is good but not a classic. Going to watch them at Wembley next year and can't wait, they're brilliant live.

Viva La Vida easily stands next to Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head. I recommend giving it a solid try. Mylo Xyloto also has several bright spots once you catch on to its vibe. Aside from the insipid lyrics, 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall' is a killer. They truly lost their way with Ghost Stories, an album throughly devoid of merit. Nevertheless, I hoped Ghost Stories was another stutter step, much like X&Y. Unfortunately, after listening to A Head Full of Dreams several times, I have to concede it just wasn't made for me. If they wanted to sound like a second rate Duran Duran cover band, they've succeeded.

'One I Love' and 'I Ran Away' are two of my favourite Coldplay songs. 'Parachutes' has a strange 'A Storm In Heaven' by the Verve vibe to it, so I think that's why I have such affection for it. Oddly, Chris Martin said he doesn't like the album and aid "We know that's terrible music and we always try to think about what we can do next."
