I've said this before regarding his live band, and it's the same regarding production, he's Noel fucking Gallagher, he should be getting in the best. Listen to how Weller's records are produced, or Bowie's, they're absolutely fantastic. Noel has the tunes to match them two, but so long as he's producing them himself, they're always gonna sound a little stale and old-fashioned in comparison.

They're not bad, but he's so big, he should have a super tight band, not one with a guitarist who can't play the easiest solo's. I also partially agree on the production. He should have someone to help him get the most out of the songs, but at the same time I think he did a great job on CY on most songs, except the ones Lorenza just mentioned, they sound too Sardy to me. I think the best examples of this are ITHOTM, The Dying Of The Light and BOTMI. All instruments are audible, a clear voice and for once it doesn't sound like my head is stuck in s kitchen sink in 1963. A more layered sound. It can be better, but at least it's a big leap forward from the production on HFB (and the last 3 Oasis albums for that matter)

It can be better, but at least it's a big leap forward from the production on HFB (and the last 3 Oasis albums for that matter) Maybe I was a little harsh in my above post, because I do agree, a couple of the tunes on the album actually do sound pretty great (ITHOTM, Dying Of The Light, Riverman and WTSRTS being my personal faves), and definitely prove Noel to be fairly competent. So it wouldn't be the end of the world for me if it was announced Noely G was doing the next one as well, but I really think he should have one (or maybe a couple) other producers come in and work on certain tracks that need lifting, or just aren't quite there, as is. I don't believe when he played YKWCGB or Lock All The Doors back in the recording studio, he thought "Aww yeah, I've fucking nailed it..." I just think, as usual, he was a lazy cock, and thought "it'll do". He even said after the album came out that "some of the bonus tracks don't sound too great". Well, why the fuck not?! In the moments where he considers putting something sub-standard out, he needs a producer to tell him no, and get it looking shipshape for him.

I honestly think the production on the album is pretty much perfect. Sounds great from start to finish.

Agreed. Don't understand why Marr was needed for that. To me it's Marr who was really wasted on the track. ha. i completely forgot he was even on the track, so yeah...wasted marr and a solo. What part did Johnny Marr actually play? Was it the solo or the little tinkly part at the end?

The way he almost unnoticeable (on first and superficial listening) fills the gaps, is what really what makes the song. Like Noel has said, he had specifically left some space and gaps for Johnny to fill in, and it works brilliantly. Perhaps you should listen to the instrumental version where it becomes more clearly. It's quite like his work with The Smiths, his guitar, especially the picking, is so understated and unpretentious, almost effortlessly, but it always serves the song in the best way. Ballad Of The Mighty I would have sounded very differently and surely worse without Johnny. Although I'd really like to hear the first, slower version with congas that Noel had recorded during the first album sessions.

Its 10 months since we first heard the song and I'm still just blown away by BOTMI. This isn't normal. I can safely say this is Noel's greatest solo song IMO. And one of the best "Oasis" number of the last 15 years.
But speaking of Johnny Marr, listen to this. You'll get an idea of how perfect he was for contributing to BOTMI.

It is seriously Noel's best solo song, with Everybody's on the Run right behind it in second, and one of the best songs he's penned in the last 15 years. The production on it is fantastic, and couldn't have been done any better. The layering on it is wonderful, and there is a nice depth to it, as shown by how well the strings and the guitars work together brilliantly in the instrumental bridge before the final verse. 9/10 for me. Had it been an Oasis song, I think that it would've gone to #1, instead of fucking 54th, like it ended up doing.
