Noel said it was the best thing he's ever done (a phrase he has said too much without credibility since the Heathen Chemistry era). People on here believed it, but initial reaction also saw people saying The Beat Goes On is equal in stature to The Masterplan, only to wisen up later.
I was only going to have two options with a Yes or No poll, but decided to put in the full range of options anyway. I go with "Good Song" as it isn't even close to all the Oasis classics (need I really list them?). Not even fucking close. Yet another exaggeration from the Chief.

Ok. If we are talking all time Noel , it's not even in top 20. If we are talking solo. I'd say top 3. A good tune ......but certainly no slide away or of that ilk

It's alright, good album closer and very interesting. Never was too thrilled about it like others but it's definitely another high point of the album.

Up there with his very best. I wasn't really a fan of the song at first but it's really grown on me over the months to become my favourite on the album.

One of my favourites from his solo output, probably top 3. But nowhere near the Oasis classics.

Okay, this is no Don't Look Back In Anger, Wonderwall etc. by any means. I think it's just below that. In my eyes it's his best solo song and it's better than some of his classics.
For me it was a real grower. At first listen I was a bit disappointed, but damn, I kept going back to it and listened to it again and again and again..and then it became my favourite of his solo career. Weird, innit

I feel like there should be another options between up there with his best and good song, that's where BOTMI ranks
I was a fan after the first listen anyway, but it kept growing everytime It's no Live Forever, but still a great song

I like it, but fuck, it is Noel Gallagher. I prefer at least 30 (and certainly more) of his songs over that one, anyday.

For me, I had to go for a good song... It's a decent tune overall, but got to say I was SOOOOOOO pleased the first time I heard the chord progression... so nice he did something a little different

I can think of 30 songs better than Wonderwall, that doesn't make it any less of a classic Noel's never come close to writing a record as good as the first two, but his back catalogue of songs is incredible I don't think BOTMI is up there with his best, but it's a great song And btw, I believe Riverman, Alone On The Rope and Everybody's On The Run are up there, but that's just me

Noel's never come close to writing a record as good as the first two Digression: Slightly disagree, both NGHFB and CY are insanely close to WTSMG. Most certainly the closest he's come; he's back on form for damn sure. Really fucking wish he never left Oasis and these solo albums were actually Oasis' 8th and 9th releases. Big mistake leaving Oasis in my opinion (but we all know I think that by now).

It sucks, it's flat, never takes off, flat, dull, repetitive, predictive, flat, flat, flat, the groove is basic without interesting harmonies (unlike while the song remains the same). Noel himself said he grew bored of playing it live. Because it's boring naturally.

I agree with this. The song starts well, I like the drums, I like the bass, but the chorus just doesn't lift it up for me. The chorus to what a life is basically just the word liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife to a melody but I find it far more memorable.

I think it's a great closer to a very good album. Not sure why it was chosen as a single, mind you.

A good song nothing more.
It's easily amongst the best of which he has released as a solo entity and the best on Chasing Yesterday, however if you were to rank every song he'd ever written it'd probably be in the 20th to 30th kind of region.
A song doesn't need to "take off" or "lift up" to be a good song.

Thanks very much. Really nice of Andy's mum to drop by the forum with such lovely comments. I also enjoyed that some of the 'initial reaction' Beady's Mighty Eye was referring to was his own. (Full disclosure, I loved it back then)

I've said it before but I think BOTMI would make a 1 disc NG best of in years to come, a genuinely amazing song in my opinion that I will play regularly for the rest of my life probably. Its a solid 9/10 for me.
That being said its obviously not as good as Live Forever / DLBIA / Champagne Supernova, I dont think Noel could possibly write these kind of songs anymore. These are all masterpieces.
