A song doesn't need to " take off" or " lift up" to be a good song. Fair point but maybe I'm struggling to find the right words because writing about music is like dancing to architecture. I can't articulate why but the song doesn't quite do it for me and it's the chorus that I don't like that much. More bass though Noel. I'm all about the bass. No treble.

How good can it be? He can't even get the guitar solo right when playing life;-)
Good song and unique.

It's an epic, and the title Ballad of the Mighty I fits, because the song feels, well, like it's about the mighty I and has a tone to it that stands above all else. I love it. I'd personally rank it as one of his best in his solo career, alongside The Death of You & Me, Everybody's on the Run, and While the Song Remains the Same. I feel as though all four of those stand up to some of his classics, and I'd rank them in the top 25 as far as songs he's penned (Riverman and The Right Stuff are very close behind, however).

Still shit. Was shit, will be shit. God that production. Maybe that other version he mentionned would have saved it, but the melody is still average.

Don't like the melody. Seems to always get stuck in my head though and I can't get rid of it which infuriates me.

It's good, but I'm not gonna go as far and say its great, but it has great moments within it. A grower for sure.
I love the bassline. The descending and shifting melody is a nice change of pace for Noel, but its Marr's guitar work that really makes the track. The cinematic interlude, solo, and outro are the main reasons why I listen to it. It ends the album on a pretty strong note. Its around top 4-6 range for the album, which speaks to the albums strength.

i didnt get what all the hype was about when the song came out. to me its just a standard noel song. good, but nothing special... its a wasted guitar solo in my opinion.

the bits that I found cringeworthy on the first listen are still cringeworthy other than that it' s a decent tune

Up there with his very best. This and Lock all The Doors manage to break into his top 30 for me We'll certainly need another L4E top 100 for 2015 around Christmas to see how many CY songs make the cut, by that time the dust will have pretty much settled.

I went for 'good song' but to be honest it's probably somewhere between that and 'up there with his best' for me. Noel's got enough good songs for there to be something in between anyway!

I love Marr's part, sure it's understated but it really adds to the track. I love the sort of orchestral sigh at the end, the whole track really feels cinematic. It's up there with his best, but it's not near his best, if that makes sense.

ha. i completely forgot he was even on the track, so yeah...wasted marr and a solo. Not the first time they wasted Marr.. Even Johnny Marr couldn't say (Probably) All in the Mind from being the worst Noel-penned album track ever. I like the song, but to me its no better or worse than a handfull of other CY songs such as Riverman, Lock all the Doors, The Dying of the Light. For me, those 4 represent the best foursome of songs he's written for an album since MG. Its probably a top 10 song he's written since 2000, but it isn't in the same league as Go Let it Out, Gas Panic!, TIOBI.

One of the best songs Noel's ever written. As good as any of the Oasis classics.

For me, "The Ballad of the Mighty Eye" stands just outside the "Up there with his very best" collection. As such, I rate it as one of his best in the "good song, nothing more" category.

It's the best song on CY but doesn't come close to anything on the debut HFB album.
I'm massively biased though as the debut HFB is in my top 5 albums ever.

I was quite nice when I said it wouldn't match my top 30... actually I think it's just top 50, maybe lower.
To be honest, I like this song but just it seems far from his best work for me. Whatever, Listen Up, Some Might Say, Supersonic, The Importance of Being Idle, Go Let It Out or Acquiesce seem two stairs above that song. And I still prefer songs like She's Electric, Take Me Away, Underneath the Sky or Fade Away by a mile. Good song but quite overrated here...

This song still amazes me every time I listen to it.
It could have been a single during the glory years I think.
